The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says disturbing the animals in their near-shore habitat could force them to swim to less favourable places,putting them at risk of being attacked by sharks and other animals.
Besides,when people are around,dolphins become more active.Thus,
they can’t get enough sleep.“Disturbing their resting behaviours can actually affect their long-term health and the health of the dolphin population,”Ann Garrett of NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service told the media.
As a result,the NOAA wants to make rules to help protect the dolphins.
For example,the agency (机构) may ban swimming with the Hawaii spinner dolphins.Or they may stop people from swimming in shallow bays when the dolphins are resting.Tour operators must also be taught to watch for signs to know when the dolphins are in their resting state.

Suzanne De Young worked as a librarian and teacher for 35 years in northern Minnesota,but she’s now retired and has lived in West St.Paul for five years.She kicked off spring 2021 by creating a Little Free Seed Library.Her yard is already a gardener’s paradise,but she shared that love by offering up literally thousands of seeds to her neighbours.
Suzanne visited Petaluma Seed Bank,which gave her the idea of the seed library.“It’s a lighthouse for the gardeners.Besides varieties of seeds,the bank also provides sustainable products,gardening tools and expert advice.And I see the value of sharing seeds,” she said.
All the seeds had to be sorted and dried.She bought small envelopes,
labeled them and put the dried seeds in them.She had hundreds of envelopes filled with seeds.She found the old mailboxes and then painted them.The containers inside holding the envelopes were from cookies.
Suzanne has many people stop and talk to her about the project and she hopes to bring the neighbourhood together through the seed library.It has warmed her heart to see parents and children stop and look through the seeds.The Little Free Seed Library has been a destination for the past month.It had positive reactions and remarks from her neighbours.They were amazed to see how doing something so simple as collecting seeds could stimulate conversations about plants and wider environmental issues.
“Gardening is seeing life.Plant the seed,water it and watch it grow.It is a fun activity that doesn’t cost anything except for some time,” she told people who picked up seeds from the seed library.

Want to help butterflies A new study suggests turning off the lights.
Light pollution at night can disturb their abilities to recognise directions,researchers have found.Artificial light can disrupt their circadian (昼夜节律的) rhythms and affect their sense of direction.That can make the butterflies disoriented when they try to fly the next day.
“Darkness is important to butterflies since the internal circadian clock of butterflies functions normally when they are exposed to natural day-night lighting cycles,” study author Patrick Guerra,an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati,tells the media.
Monarch butterflies migrate (迁徙) by the millions each year,making the trip from northern areas of the continent to California and Mexico and back.Because most butterflies only live for a few weeks to a few months,it takes several generations of butterflies to complete the migration.But too much light at the wrong time can urge the butterflies to take off when they should be resting instead for their voyage.
“As monarch butterflies are a threatened species with their population numbers in decline,we wanted to see what types of environmental stress might be linked to their decline,” Guerra says.
For their study,researchers conducted lab studies where they reproduced the effects of artificial light pollution on butterflies using a flight simulator
(模拟器).
They first tested if monarch butterflies treated a single,artificial light source as if it were the actual sun during the day.Once they established what they did,they then tested how the monarch butterflies would behave when exposed to this same artificial light source during their night.
Butterflies stayed quiet and unmoving when they were first placed in the flight simulator in the dark.But as soon as scientists turned on the light,they started flying.The light made them believe that night was day and this can cause them to fly longer at night or start flying too early.
“These findings demonstrate how urbanisation can negatively affect important biological phenomena,and therefore allow us to understand how human activities impact the rest of nature,” Guerra says.

三、复合句中的省略
1.状语从句的省略。
(1)在when、while、whenever、till、as soon as、if、unless、once、as long as、even if/though、though、although、as if/though等引导的时间、条件、让步、比较、方式等状语从句中,若谓语含有be动词,且从句的主语与主句的主语相同(或从句主语是it)时,则省略从句中的主语和be动词。

(1)答语中的有些动词(短语)后跟不定式作宾语时,可将其动词省略,而保留to,这样的动词(短语)常见的有want、wish、expect、hope、would like/love、like、love、try、forget、prefer、mean、be going to、be about to、be supposed to等。

China has planted millions of trees in its north over the past two decades as part of its fight against expanding deserts.
The effort paid off.Around the year 2000,deserts across the country were still expanding by 10,400 km2 a year.But in 2017,the State Forestry Administration reported that China’s deserts were decreasing by more than 2,400 km2 a year.The achievement was confirmed by a 2018 study from the Laboratory of Climate and Environmental Sciences in Paris.
“In 1999,the Chinese government began planting millions of trees in its Grain-for-Green Programme.It was intended to repair damaged farmland in the northern Loess Plateau,which is roughly the size of France,” says Philippe Ciais,a climate researcher at the laboratory.“I was there a few months ago,and it is indeed amazing that once bare landscapes are now almost fully covered by plants.”
And China is doubling its effort and has announced a target of 30% forest coverage by 2050.From 2014 to 2022,the coverage is 23%.
“The growth of forests is significant and necessary progress in the fight against desertification,” says Jianping Huang,a climate researcher at Lanzhou University.“But it’s still too early to determine whether it has solved the problem.In the northwest of China,researchers have found that many of the plant species introduced to the Loess Plateau use more water than native vegetation.A 2016 study found that the restored ecosystem was already using too much rainfall and reducing the amount of water that runs off to rivers.It could lead to water shortages for humans.”
Considering water shortages are important,the national forestry department has recognised the error of planting trees in dry areas.In recent years,it has worked more closely with researchers and communities to find ways to seed less-thirsty plants that have economic value.These include plants used in traditional Chinese medicine,which farmers can harvest and sell.
“All programmes need to take local conditions into account,” the forestry department said.“Our efforts should go towards keeping vegetation healthy,rather than simply planting trees.”

Adult pandas spend most part of the day eating bamboo and have to take in at least 40 pounds a day to stay healthy.However,a new study warned that they may soon find their food gone because most of the bamboo in the Qinling Mountains might disappear by the end of the century as a result of rising temperature worldwide.
A team made up of researchers from Michigan State University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences has studied the effects of climate change on the bamboo in the Qinling Mountains.They have found that bamboo is very sensitive to climate changes.“80% to 100% of the bamboo would be gone if the average temperature rises 3.5 degrees worldwide by the end of the century,” said Liu Jianguo,one of the report’s authors.
He added,“This is how much the temperature would rise by 2100 even if all countries will keep their promises in the Paris Agreement.But you know what is happening all around the world.”
In recent years,China has been trying its best to protect the endangered pandas by setting up more and bigger nature reserves.
“But it is far from enough and the endangered pandas need cooperation from the rest of the world,because their future is not just in the hands of the Chinese,” said Shirley Martin from the World Wide Fund for Nature but not a member of the team.
The Qinling Mountains are home to about 345 pandas in 2021.That is about 18.5% of China’s wild panda population.
