Yasmin Alkashef grew up in Egypt learning English and Arabic. From a very young age, she knew she loved languages. In the fourth grade, she began learning French. Her love for languages continued into high school, where she began training to be a translator. Now she interprets and translates for people professionally.
Alkashef has been a translator for 20 years. She’s a member of the American Translators Association board of directors and a certified Arabic-English translator, a certified court interpreter, and a conference interpreter. Though the jobs have similarities, translators work with written material while interpreters work with spoken language. Confidence is crucial to both jobs.
Most interpreters and translators are freelancers (自由职业者), which means they’re not employed as staff for an organization or a company. Being a freelancer means doing a variety of work for a variety of clients. Alkashef enjoys this aspect of her job. “It’s always fun, because every week is different, and the topics are always different,” she says. “One day, you are translating a document about clean water, and the next day, you are in court, interpreting a case. The following day, you’re at a conference about international peace. You learn a lot, because you get to get in touch with so many different people.”
Alkashef has interpreted at court cases and film festivals, and at political events with people such as presidents and kings. The work can be exciting and attractive, but also challenging and sad.
“Interpreters speak in the first person,” Alkashef says. “When they say something sad or painful, their subconscious does not understand that it is somebody else’s story. So interpreters come home with this burden, and they have to do self-care to take care of their mental health.”
Alkashef is most grateful that through her work, she’s able to help others. “It’s more than just the words. The interpreter brings an understanding of the cultures, of history, and of a lot of things,” she says. Her work has enriched her life in many ways, and she tries to impart what she learns to those around her.
24.What distinguishes translators from interpreters according to the text
A.Their wage level. B.Their working time.
C.The client type they serve. D.The medium they use.
25.Why does Alkashef enjoy being a freelancer
A.Because of diverse tasks. B.Because of stable income.
C.Because of predictable routine. D.Because of fewer responsibilities.
26.What challenge do interpreters face mentally according to Alkashef
A.Language barriers. B.Emotional stress.
C.Time management. D.Technical difficulties.
27.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the last paragraph
A.To highlight the impact of Alkashef’s work.
B.To compare Alkashef’s work with others.
C.To emphasize the importance of words of gratitude.
D.To present Alkashef’s ability to understand others.
C
It is widely thought that our galaxy, the Milky Way, is certain to collide (碰撞) with the neighboring Andromeda galaxy sometime around 5 billion years from now. But according to new research, maybe we shouldn’t count on this multigalactic collision happening as previously expected.
In a study published recently in Nature Astronomy, researchers who analyzed data from the European Space Agency’s space telescope and NASA’s telescope say the event is more of a coin flip than a given: The team suggests there’s just about a 50–50 chance of the two galaxies colliding within the next 10 billion years or so. When you look at the next 4–5 billion years, that chance drops down to around 2%.
In other space news, scientists are discussing about a star that is small in mass but huge in energy. TOI-6894 is a red dwarf (红矮星) that is roughly 20% as massive as our sun. But in another study published in Nature Astronomy, researchers say they’ve spotted a giant planet orbiting the little star. The planet, called TOI-6894b, is described as a low-density gas giant. Astronomers say the presence of a gas giant that surrounds such a small star is so surprising that it challenges the most widely accepted theory of planet formation.
The theory, called core accretion (积聚), suggests that giant planets are born when their solid cores get massive enough to start pulling in lots of gas. Smaller stars generally lack enough gas and dust to allow for such a process, but this red dwarf ended up with a gas giant going around it anyhow. Because red dwarf stars are super common in our galaxy, this could mean gas giants are more plentiful than we thought.
The researchers will use the James Webb Space Telescope to study the planet’s atmosphere, which should provide more clues about its formation.
28.How does the author begin paragraph 1
A.By comparing the data.
B.By quoting from documents.
C.By concluding from some previous research.
D.By mentioning a common astronomical belief.
29.What does the underlined part “a coin flip” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.A given chance. B.An uncertain situation.
C.A constant rule. D.An apparent choice.
30.What do we know about TOI-6894
A.There is little energy in it. B.It is orbiting TOI-6894b.
C.It is twice as massive as the sun. D.There is a huge planet around it.
31.What can we infer from paragraph 4
A.There may exist more huge gas planets in space.
B.Smaller stars do not form satellites.
C.Red dwarfs are rare in the universe.
D.Gas giants require no solid cores.
D
Researchers from Northwestern University and the Chicago Botanic Garden will study the carbon capture (碳捕获) effects of soil additives on agricultural fields.
For the world to meet the global average temperature goals set forth in the 2015 Paris Agreement, we need to actively decrease carbon emissions (排放). Earth and planetary sciences professor Andy Jacobson suggests Earth science can help it and that one possible way is to capture atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and lock it away for a few thousand years.
The chemical weathering (风化) of rocks is a natural phenomenon that transforms atmospheric CO2 into a stable mineral form. When CO2 dissolves in water, it creates a substance that can break down rocks. This transformation releases elements from certain rocks and changes CO2 into a stable form. Over time, these elements combine to form minerals that are the building blocks of many natural structures and rocks. This transformation helps to lock carbon in a solid form, which plays an important part in stabilizing Earth’s climate over the long term.
“Over much shorter human timescales, this stable form of CO2 acts as a sink for atmospheric CO2,” says Jacobson. Can we speed up the weathering process and actively remove carbon from the atmosphere at rates fast enough to help reduce the impact of modern climate change
Enhanced rock weathering was proposed as a strategy of decreasing carbon emissions decades ago but only recently gained interest. An article in a 2020 magazine estimated that enhanced weathering could remove up to 2 billion tons of CO2 annually from the atmosphere by 2050.
Jacobson is leading a team of researchers to investigate this negative emissions technology. In a series of experimental systems that simulate natural conditions at the garden, researchers will test the effects from adding different types of rock to soils used to grow various crops. The soil additives will include a volcanic rock that chemically weathers faster than other rocks and minerals, potentially speeding up CO2 capture and storage.
32.What does Jacobson stress about Earth science in paragraph 2
A.Its scientific origin as a principle.
B.Its present limitations in carbon capture.
C.Its potential role in achieving climate goals.
D.Its logical accuracy in temperature prediction.
33.What is mainly discussed in paragraph 3 concerning rocks
A.The process of their weathering.
B.The reasons for their formation.
C.Their natural structures.
D.Their stable chemical composition.
34.What is the main function of the question in paragraph 4
A.To summarize the previous paragraph.
B.To doubt the content of a magazine.
C.To introduce the following solution.
D.To show the fast rate of climate change.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.Can Humans Stabilize Earth’s Climate
B.Is Farming the Key to Carbon Capture
C.What Is the Chemical Weathering of Rocks
D.How Do Carbon Emissions Speed up Global Warming

My Little Farm Project
My love for planting started with a school project. We were tasked with growing a plant at home. I chose garlic (大蒜) because it seemed easy. I found a head of garlic in the kitchen, and my mom showed me how to separate it. I planted a few of the small sections in a pot and placed it by the window where it could get plenty of sunlight. Watering it daily became my new routine. One day, to my surprise, green shoots appeared! Watching them grow, I felt a sense of excitement. When I finally harvested a perfect bulb of garlic, I was incredibly proud. That small success “planted” a big idea in my mind. “Since we live on a farm, why not grow more for family food ” I thought.
I first talked about my idea to my dad, who was busy on the farm. He thought for a moment and then pointed to a sunny spot. “You can use that area,” he said. “But it’s hard work.” My mom was supportive too. The next day, she drove me to the local garden store. We bought packets of carrot seeds. As we left, she picked up a few discarded (丢弃的) garlic sections on the ground. “No waste on a farm!” she said. I also told my best friend, Leo, about my plan. Since his family had a small garden, he offered to help me that weekend. When Leo arrived, we saw my mom casually throw those garlic pieces onto the freshly turned soil of our new garden bed.
We started by clearing the plot of weeds and rocks. The sun was hot, and the work was tough. Seeing us struggling, my dad brought over a machine to loosen the soil. My mom brought us cool drinks. With their help, we soon had a neat garden bed. We carefully planted the seeds in straight rows, just like the instructions on the packets said. I watered the soil gently. Every day after that, I would check the plot, hoping for the first sign of life.

Green Living: Start with Me
Green living means living in a way that is environmentally friendly and sustainable. It involves saving resources, reducing waste, and protecting our planet. I believe green living benefits the environment, health, and economy.
To practice green living in my daily life, I will start with small steps. For example, I will use reusable bags instead of plastic ones when shopping. I will also turn off the lights and water taps when they arent in use to save energy and water. Moreover, I will try to walk or bike more often instead of driving, which can reduce air pollution and save money.
I hope more people will join me in practicing green living and protecting our planet.

参考范文:
Under our care for weeks, tiny green shoots finally pushed through the soil. I was overjoyed. The plants grew steadily. The carrot tops became feathery and green. I weeded and watered diligently. One afternoon, while checking the carrots, I noticed something strange. Among the feathery green carrot tops, there were tall garlic stalks growing there. Puzzled, I called my mom. She examined them and laughed, “Surprise! I remember now—I threw those leftover garlic pieces here when we started the garden. They decided to grow alongside your carrots!” I found it exciting. My garden had given me an unexpected gift.
The harvest day was the most rewarding experience. My parents and Leo all gathered to help. We pulled up the big carrots. We also harvested the plump garlic bulbs that had grown secretly among them. That evening, the air was filled with the amazing smell of roasted carrots and garlic from our kitchen. Sharing this meal with my family and Leo, I realized the true joy of farming. It wasnt just about the food; it was about the hard work, the surprises, and the people who helped along the way.
