(Text 4)
M:Wow,they really changed this place! It looks like a whole new bar!

(Text 5)
W:Can you take a look at my bike It’s making a noise.
M:Mmm...You just need a little oil on your chains, although you should get your brakes looked at soon.I will add a little air to your tires, too.

W:Thank you. We’re excited to be here. It’s our first time.
M:Well,we have a lot of activities for children of all ages.Everyone can find something fun to play with here.
W:My daughter here just turned three.
M:Great! We have a special area designed just for kids who are 2 to 4 years old.The older kids have an area just for them as well. So,it’s $15 per kid and $5 per adult. We accept cash and credit cards.

W:But I’m afraid you can’t finish your homework in time.
M:Don’t worry,Mum.I can take my books with me.
W:OK,if you say so.
(Text 10)
People know Queenstown is famous for its thrilling activity, even though there are other things worth seeing and fun to do there. But only bungee jumping appeals to me.Once I arrived there from Japan,I dragged my best friend to join the list of crazy guys who love bungee jumping.Well,as soon as I stepped on the tiny walkway leading to the platform, all my heroic bravery was gone and seemed to be left at the registry counter of the shop on the ground when I paid the money.
Looking downwards along my heavy path,I realised,“It’s amazingly high from the ground.Maybe I should simply waste the money in order to save my life!” But,at last,I closed my eyes and then jumped.
I started to scream louder and louder in my heart but concealed this feeling by making no sounds at all outside.I had already been very embarrassed to linger there at the edge the moment before, and thus I had to be a bit cool through the whole process of jumping to save face.
Being upside down, hanging in the sky,was not fun at all.The most memorable second was the time before and right after I jumped. That’s my best conclusion from the bittersweet experience of bungee jumping.

Biomedical breakthroughs sometimes happen in the most unlikely places.Take the deep sea for an illustration.Under extreme conditions, at times of no oxygen, microbes (微生物) not only survive there, but they thrive. This incredible adaptation offers insight into how life evolved billions of years ago and how modern humans may be able to fight infections and diseases—tests used to diagnose (诊断) some viruses were developed with the help of enzyme (酶) separated from microbes found in ocean.
“We’ve found marine microbes produce antimicrobials—basically chemical weapons that help them fight off other organisms and resist viruses,” says Virginia Edgcomb, a microbiologist investigating deep-sea bacteria. These microbes feed on tough substances and produce antimicrobial chemicals.
The deep sea has already given us chemicals to treat certain cancers or nerve damage.Breakthroughs have also come from the ocean depths in the form of diagnostic tools.
The pathway to developing tests started back in 1969 when some heat-loving microbes were found in the depth of 5,000 metres beneath the sea.By mid-1980s, the humble microbes had enabled a major advance in the emerging field of genetics. Scientists found that their enzymes remained stable enough to make millions of copies of a single DNA sequence (序列) in just a few hours, essentially upgrading geneticists’ tools.
“A lot of people think of the deep sea as a desert,” Virginia says.“To our naked eye, it looks like there’s nothing there but there’s huge potential. What I can do as a science researcher is record the remarkable diversity of microbes and make their gene sequences available, which may help lead to treatment or diagnostic tool in the future.”
“We need to have people constantly exploring the fascinating habitats in order to continue uncovering a new page of medically-relevant enzymes,” Virginia says.“This is tough, but I do hope people realise that the more we can learn about microbes, the better off we are.”

A new NASA-led study has found that how rain falls in a given year is nearly as important to the world’s vegetation (植物) as how much. The researchers showed that even in years with similar rainfall totals, plants grew differently when that water came in fewer, bigger bursts.
Scientists have previously estimated that almost half of the world’s vegetation is driven primarily by how much rain falls in a year.Less well understood is the role of day-to-day variability, said lead author Andrew Feldman,an ecosystem scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre.
The team analysed two decades of field and satellite observations spanning diverse landscapes from Siberia to the southern tip of Patagonia. They found that plants across 42% of Earth’s vegetated land surface were sensitive to daily rainfall variability.Of those,a little over half grew better in years with fewer but more intense wet days. These include drier landscapes like grasslands, croplands and deserts. In contrast, broadleaf forests and rainforests in lower and middle latitudes (纬度) tended to grow worse under those conditions, possibly because they could not tolerate the longer dry periods.Statistically, daily rainfall variability was nearly as important as annual rainfall totals in driving growth worldwide.
The new study relied primarily on a suite of NASA missions and datasets, which provides rain and snowfall rates for most of the planet every 30 minutes using a network of international satellites. To measure plant response day to day,the researchers calculated how green an area appeared in satellite imagery.“Greenness” is commonly used to estimate vegetation density and health. They also tracked a faint reddish light that plants give off during photosynthesis (光合作用),when a plant absorbs sunlight to transform carbon dioxide and water into food. This faint light is an obvious sign of flourishing vegetation.
Feldman said the findings highlight the vital role that plants play in moving carbon around Earth — a process called the carbon cycle.“A finer understanding of how plants thrive or decline day to day, storm by storm, could help us better understand their role in that critical cycle,” Feldman said.

If you’re not at least a bit terrified by the climate and ecological breakdown unfolding before our eyes, you haven’t grasped the scale of the crisis.Eco-anxiety,defined as “a chronic (长期的) fear of environmental doom”,is on the rise. But redirecting this anxiety into anger and collective action might just pull humanity back from the brink (边缘).
We don’t yet know how deeply eco-anxiety affects people, but we can learn not to repeat the mistakes of long-gone societies lost to environmental collapse.Jared Diamond’s Collapse:How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed uncovers the common driver that led to the fall of ancient civilisations such as the Central American Mayan, the remote Pacific Easter Island, and the Mycenae (迈锡尼).People accidentally destroyed the environmental resources on which their societies depended.
Today,we are living in a new climate and ecological age.The new normal is one that humans have never experienced before on the Earth, and that has occurred within a single generation. We can’t claim ignorance.Numerous scientific reports show unprecedented (空前的) wildfires in the Arctic, heatwaves annually breaking records, the Amazon shrinking and drying, and species extinction rates accelerating.Nature’s dangerous decline is unprecedented.
So,it’s not surprising that eco-anxiety is on the rise.Anxiety is often a private emotional state: we feel alone, stuck inside our own heads, and our emotions stop us from doing the things we want. But anger, directed appropriately, can fuel powerful collective action for change.
We are on a pathway to destroying the global conditions for human survival.Unlike previous civilisations,we have the science and technology to understand our danger and chart a new pathway. This is a moment for all of us to channel our eco-anxiety,fear and anger into energy for change.

Can you tell if a person has positive character traits based on first impressions The thing is that it’s easy to be impressed by someone’s level of education, income, and job title.36. It’s usually the little things that make the biggest difference. Here are some specific ways to judge a person’s character.
37. You can perceive it when a person holds the view that he is naturally superior to someone whom he refers to as “just a busboy (餐厅勤杂工)”.A kind person will be respectful to every single person, not just to those from whom he might expect some form of return.
The best conversations occur when everyone feels heard, appreciated, and valued.People who actively listen engage in meaningful conversations.38. Moreover, speaking of talking, one should pay attention to how a person talks about others.A person with a great character is more interested in lifting others rather than bringing them down.
All people have done things that they’re not proud of.The bigger challenge is determining what to do after that.Do they own up to their mistakes 39. It’s easier to do the latter, but it shows a person’s ignorance, arrogance, and selfishness.A person of integrity will admit his mistakes and make up for them.
Even the most successful people have their share of rejections and failures.People of strong character don’t view challenges and failures as deal-breakers.40. And once at the top, they never forget to thank the people who gave them the major boost to get to the finish line.
A.In other words, they listen to talks.
B.Learning to accept failures is a sign of maturity.
C.Are they consistent in their emotions and actions

When I was in middle school,my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business—a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature,I had to take a fresh start to fit into the city life.
One sunny day,my school announced an exciting event,a talent show for the local food bank.Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day.A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day.Deep down,I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However,my self-doubt held me back,“I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer.I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class.“How about singing together in the talent show ” she grinned (笑).“I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home.I can’t help following you here.”Oh,I couldn’t believe my ears.Emma,a popular girl with a personality, acknowledged my little talent.Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice,I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two The talent show for the food bank ” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up.“A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go off in her head.“Why not practise right now upstairs I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us,she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing (排练) almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by,I was feeling pretty good about our act.But the day before the performance,Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

Then I started to pace up and down like a caged animal, debating with myself whether or not to go on stage alone.“How can this be possible ” I thought to myself.Fear and anxiety coursed through my veins, and it seemed that all our hard work was in vain. But then the support and encouragement from Emma and my mum came flooding back to me.It was at that moment that I realised that I couldn’t let self-doubt hold me back. Filled with determination ,I resolved to proceed with the performance by myself.
Finally came the big moment. As I stepped onto the stage,I could feel my heart thumping wildly in my chest.Glancing around the hall , I took a deep breath and began to sing.Surprisingly, all my worries suddenly disappeared and a wave of confidence washed over me.I was completely immersed in the joy of performing and the audience was spellbound by the passion in my voice. When I finished my song, the whole hall burst into applause.Tears of joy welled up in my eyes as Emma presented a big bunch of flowers to me,and my mum stood near, winking at us.

D.They see them as powerful learning opportunities.
E.Or do they immediately shift the blame onto others
F.The way people treat those they don’t know can be revealing.
G.But a person’s character is not related to these external achievements.
