"Let's get Mom a pug(哈巴狗) for her birthday. It might cheer her up," my brother said. I agreed right away. Our father had passed away weeks earlier, leaving Mom sad and lonely. None of us was sure how to help her.

Maybe a little dog wasn't a bad idea. We had had a dog, Luke, and we all loved him. Mom had suggested the idea of adopting a pug once, but Dad often responded, "What do we need another dog for We have Luke." But Dad and Luke were both gone now.

After a long-time search, I finally found an ad for young pugs in a local newspaper. A nearby family had a pug, which had just given birth to four young pugs. All would be ready to leave their mom in a few weeks. I gave them a call. The man who answered the phone listened patiently to my story and then allowed us to adopt one.

Soon, the date of visiting them was set. When the day arrived, I got into my brother's car. We pulled up in front of some houses that sat along an arrow street. As we stepped onto the sidewalk, we were greeted by barks. Two pugs had positioned themselves on the back of a sofa and were watching us through a window.
As we rang the doorbell, more barks followed. A couple with kind smiles opened the door. I could see the pugs behind them, running and rushing to get to us. Each pug wore a collar of different colors. The couple welcomed us to their home.
We met the dogs' parents and then set about the business of choosing a friend for our mother. Three of the dogs looked up at us with big, curious eyes. The fourth one, with the green collar, who I was holding, began to move his tail excitedly and kiss my face.
"Let's take this green one. Look! How lovely he is!" I said. But my brother said, "Let's take some time to get to know all of them. "
