Unexpected Benefits of Volunteering as a Family
Are you looking for a way to bring your family together Hoping to find a hobby that can be shared by both the little ones and adults? 36 You may know the “feel-good” emotions that come with helping others, but there are even more unexpected ways volunteering will positively affect the whole family.
●You'll feel like you have more time.
People often feel they are too busy to volunteer. Yet, research has found that giving
your time to community causes actually makes you feel like you have more of it. 37
●You can live longer if you volunteer regularly.
38 Washington University found that adults 55 and older who volunteered had better memory
and maintained overall health longer than others their age. Volunteers are also more likely to look
after their own health and are more focused on adding physical activity into their lives.
● 39
Volunteering during teenage years has been linked to some major positive effects such as improved grades and increased self-confidence. These effects aren't just short-term but have been proved to affect a teen's well-being in the years to come.
●You'll have more time with family.
Families who volunteer together have the unique experience of working toward a common goal. 40 Everyone brings something unique to the table and can connect with each other in a new way. And, there are tasks for every age and ability, so all your children can feel proud of their work.

一般具体模式(General—Specific Pattern)
Para.1 General statement — positively affect the whole family
Para.2-5 Details
Not all great writers are great spellers. If you want to be published, it's vital to submit a perfect, professionally presented manuscript (原稿). 36 No editor is likely to tolerate a writer who does not take the trouble to spell words correctly.
I keep two reference books close-by on my desk: dictionary and thesaurus (同义词词典). I don't trust my laptop's spellchecker. 37 Of course, these days there are plenty of online dictionaries and thesauruses, but I'm old-fashioned enough to prefer a hard cover and pages I can leaf through with my fingers. I use the Concise Oxford Dictionary and the Collins Thesaurus.
38 It should give you a precise definition of each word, thus differentiating it from other
words whose meanings are similar, but not identical. It will also usually show how the word is pronounced.
In addition, I have an old two-volume copy of the Shorter Oxford Dictionary, picked up a few years ago in a bookshop sale for just 99 pence. Of course, with its 2,672 pages, it's not exactly short. It contains around 163,000 words, plus word combinations and idiomatic phrases. 39 However,
if I need to check the origin of a word or to look up examples of its usage, there's nothing better.
For well over a hundred years the most influential English dictionary was Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language published in 1755. "To make dictionaries is dull (乏味) work," wrote Johnson, illustrating one definition of "dull". 40 A few minutes spent casting your eye over a page or two can be a rewarding experience.

(25-26高二上·江苏南通·期末)Even if you don’t worry that artificial intelligence will destroy the human race, you might worry that its alarming appetite for electricity will destroy the environment — asking Chat GPT a question means using ten times more energy than an old-fashioned approach. With new data centers planned, further growth in energy consumption seems unavoidable. 1 In fact, AI may be less energy-hungry than many people assume. Better still, AI can help decarbonize the industries that have proved hardest to clean up.
Consider AI’s appetite for energy first. The International Energy Agency (IEA) expects that electricity consumption by data centres could be three times as much in the next five years. 2 Data centres today only account for about 1.5% of the world’s electricity consumption — and the vast majority of that is due to streaming, social media and online shopping, not AI.
3 AI stands out in identifying complex patterns, processing giant data sets and boosting systems, all of which can help cut emissions sharply. AI is already helping improve the efficiency of electrical grids, cut fuel use in shipping and spot otherwise invisible leaks of methane, a greenhouse gas.
The task for policymakers and industry bosses is to maximize such benefits while minimizing the climate impacts. The most elegant solution would be for governments to set a proper price on carbon and leave the market to do its work. 4
The first is greater transparency (透明). From August 2026 the EU will require some AI developers to report their energy use in detail. A second is to rethink how data centres operate. The IEA notes that being able to shift workloads between different data centres at different times could reduce stress and help balance energy grids. Third, tech firms should hold themselves to their own environmental promises. 5 Doubling down on some approaches would help transform AI from climate suspect to climate hero.
A.But the concern is misplaced.
B.That approach should be copied elsewhere.
C.Even if energy usage rises, though, the base is still low.
D.For instance, Microsoft aims to become “carbon negative” by 2030.
E.Microsoft’s greenhouse-gas emissions are up by almost 30% since 2020.
F.Moreover, some of AI’s electricity use will help with greening the economy.
G.But because it remains a distant dream, focusing on other measures is more realistic.

(2026·河北保定·一模)With most of today’s written communication typed out on keyboards, you may not see much of a reason to improve your handwriting. 6 . It is exactly the moment you realize your handwriting looks not great. Luckily, it’s never too late to get better handwriting. Here are some ways.
Find space and comfort
If you’ve ever struggled to sign a paper or write a note with no table in sight, you know it’s important to feel comfortable when you want to write clearly. Start by giving yourself a chance to sit down at a stable table. Keep cups, personal items and any decoration far from you. 7 .
Find the right pen
Now, it’s time to get a pen you like. The best way to know if a pen is right for you is to try it. If you can, go to a stationery store and take your time sampling the pens there. 8 . Maybe buy two or three to keep testing at home. If you have no idea where to start, you can always give some fan favorites a test drive.
9
To make your writing practice more effective, start by using paper with guidance lines. Whether you prefer lined or dotted paper, these visual aids help you maintain consistent letter size, alignment, and direction, making it easier to develop uniform handwriting. Mastering this foundation is the first step toward developing any handwriting style with confidence.
Adjust your writing speed and grip (紧握)
10 . You should write neither too quickly nor too slowly. Moreover, avoid holding the pen too tightly. If your fingertips turn white, loosen your hold. A relaxed grip helps prevent hand strain and pain, allowing you to write longer without discomfort. If you still have trouble controlling the pen, try a different kind of pen.
A.Find out the guidance lines
B.Make the paper adapt to you
C.When you write, do it at a normal pace
D.It’s a good idea to keep the paper as flat as possible
E.But from time to time, you still need to fill out paper forms
F.Write some words on the provided paper and see how each pen feels
G.This makes you move freely without fear of knocking something down
