Text 10The Mid-Autumn Festival, sometimes called the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, (18) is celebrated by many Asian countries including China. It is considered to be one of the most important holidays. It has a longer history than Christmas, stretching back over 3000 years to the days of the Shang Dynasty. However, it gained popularity during the Tang Dynasty. (18) The term “Mid-Autumn Festival” first appeared in “Rites of Zhou”, a written collection of rituals of the Western Zhou Dynasty. In modern times, it is often celebrated by making lanterns of different shapes and sizes to act as symbols of hope for the future. People also make and eat moon cakes, because they are round like the moon. (19) They are usually eaten along with tea. The festival is always held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. In 2020, it fell on the 1st of October. This was extra special because this was the same date as the National Day of the People’s Republic of China. (20) In 2021, the festival will take place on the 21st of September.
