Forgetting is part of our daily lives. You might walk into a room only to forget why you went there,or perhaps someone says hi on the street and you can't remember his name.
Hermann Ebbinghaus,a German psychologist (心理学家) from the 19th century, was one of the first researchers to study forgetting.(1)______ But then the speed of forgetting slows down over time. This idea, known as the "forgetting curve (曲线)," has been supported by modern studies.
But why do we forget things? Is it simply a sign of memory loss.In fact, forgetting can be a normal and helpful part of how our memory works.
For one thing, forgetting helps us pay attention to more important things. Our brains receive a lot of information every day.(2)______ If we remembered everything,it would be hard to pay attention to what really matters.
For another,we also need to forget things in order to update (更新) our memories with new information.Imagine you've been following the same school timetable for a whole year, but the next year it will change.(3)______ Or,maybe it has been 10 years since you last saw one of your relatives. His or her face has probably changed a lot,so your memory of the person may need updating as well.
(4)______ They actually help our brain work well. This doesn't mean you should try to be more forgetful. We just want you to better understand the rules of forgetting.
A.Recalling a memory can actually change it.
B.In general,we forget information for a lot of reasons.
C.You can't possibly remember every face you pass on the street.

Have you wondered what it would be like to live in space? The following will explain astronauts' daily life to you.
Eating in space
Imagine going camping for more than a week with some friends. You would make sure you have plenty of foods and store them properly. At the end of your camping trip, you would deal with your rubbish properly before the ride home.
Astronauts almost do the same thing when they go to space.Preparation varies with the food type. Some foods can be eaten in their natural forms, such as chocolate cakes and fruits.Other foods require adding water, such as cheese.Of course,an oven is provided at the space station to heat the food. But there are no fridges,so space food must be stored properly.
Sleeping in space
After a long day at work, nothing is better than a good night's sleep!Just like on the earth,in space astronauts go to bed at a certain time, then get up and prepare for work again. When going to sleep, they have to attach themselves,so they don't float around or hit their bodies against something. They usually use sleeping bags located in small crew cabins (乘员舱).Each crew cabin is just big enough for one person.Generally, astronauts have an eight-hour sleep each day when they finish their task.
Doing sports in space
Exercise is an important part of every astronaut's daily life to prevent muscle loss (肌肉萎缩).On average, astronauts exercise two hours every day.Lifting 200 pounds on the earth may be a lot of work. But lifting that same object in space would be much easier. That means exercise equipment needs to be specially designed,so astronauts can receive the exercise needed.
Living in space is not just all work and no play.Astronauts have fun, too. They like to look out the window and play with their food.Fun plays an important role in the quality of their life.
27.The author starts to explain eating in space by ______ .

Millions of people open fitness apps (健身应用程序) each day to stay motivated (有动力的) and reach their health goals (目标).But a new study suggests these apps might have the opposite effect.
Researchers studied nearly 14,000 negative posts on a social platform about the five most popular fitness apps.Instead of feeling motivated, many users said they felt confused, angry,or even ashamed because of how the apps set and tracked their goals. What was meant to help people live healthier lives often left them feeling bad about themselves.
The researchers explained their findings using "self-determination theory (自我决定理论)",which says motivation depends on three things:autonomy(feeling in control),competence(feeling able to do something),and relatedness(feeling connected to other people).Fitness apps, they found, often weaken all three.
Many apps reduce autonomy by setting automatic (自动的) goals, such as calorie limits or weight-loss plans, without asking what feels right for users. Some people said the apps told them to eat far too little, while others noticed that goals didn't change for personal situations such as doing more exercise.
Problems with the apps also hurt people's sense of competence.Users said their apps froze, lost progress,or lost their streaks after missing just one day.Seeing their hard work disappear made them feel like failures, and many stopped trying altogether.
Finally, the study found that many users felt unsupported. The apps' reminders to post about their meals or warnings about certain foods often felt more like criticism (批评) than help.
The researchers said that fitness apps should be designed to support realistic goals.Instead of focusing on eating fewer calories and keeping perfect streaks, the apps should help people enjoy exercise, find balance and be kind to themselves.
Until that happens, the app that is supposed to motivate you might actually be the thing making you want to give up!
31.What is the main finding of the new study? ______
A. Fitness apps are useless for motivation.
B. Most users find it hard to use fitness apps.
C. Fitness apps are only popular among young people.
D. Fitness apps may make users feel worse instead of better.
32.Why do fitness apps reduce users' autonomy? ______
A. Because they are too expensive.
B. Because they focus only on exercise.
C. Because they never set goals on their own.
D. Because they set goals without considering users' needs.
33.What does the underlined word "streaks" mean in paragraph 5? ______
A. Short breaks. B. Goals.

34.How should these apps be improved? ______

B. By helping users enjoy exercise.

D. By focusing more strictly on users' goals.
35.Who should follow the suggestions in the passage? ______
A. Private doctors. B. Marketing experts (专家).
C. Fitness coaches. D. App developers.

St Clare promised Tom that he would set him free soon.Tom was happy to hear that because he had always been dreaming of being a free man.But unluckily,St Clare was badly wounded while he was trying to stop a fight in a cafe. The doctor could do nothing to save him. Then,St Clare closed his eyes and passed away, holding Tom's hands.
After the funeral (葬礼),the slaves (奴隶) found themselves in a dangerous situation. When St Clare was alive, they belonged (属于) to him.But now their master became Marie, the wife of St Clare.Things were going to be very different.
Marie's attitude (态度) to the slaves became very clear soon. She didn't like the way Rosa, one of the girls, spoke to her.So she decided to punish her with fifteen lashes in a whipping (鞭笞) house.Rosa ran to Miss Ophelia for help.
"I wouldn't mind the whipping so much if Mrs St Clare or you were to do it to me.But it's a shame to be beaten by that terrible man,Miss Ophelia" Rosa said.
Miss Ophelia felt sympathetic (同情的) to her and decided to talk to Marie.
"Rosa is very sorry for what she did," said Miss Ophelia.
"Oh,really?I don't think she feels sorry.I will teach her how to speak to me.Whipping is the only way black people learn," Marie replied.
After that,a man came and took Rosa to the whipping house.
A few days later,Adolph, another slave, went to talk to Tom.
"Do you know that Mrs St Clare is going to sell us?"
"How do you know that?" said Tom.
"I was behind the curtains (窗帘) when she came into the room with her lawyer. They didn't see me,and I heard their conversation. In a few days, she will send us off to the auction (拍卖)."
Tom decided to ask Miss Ophelia for help because he knew she treated him with respect and kindness.
"Miss Ophelia," he said, "Master St Clare promised to give me freedom.Could you speak about it to Mrs St Clare and tell her it was Master St Clare's wish?"
"I'll speak for you,Tom," said Miss Ophelia, "but there isn't much hope."
"Absolutely not (绝对不行)," Marie answered. "I can sell Tom at the highest price and make a lot of money.Besides,he doesn't need freedom.Slaves don't know what to do with freedom."
Then Miss Ophelia did the best thing she could do for Tom.She wrote a letter to Mrs Shelby and urged (极力劝说) her to buy Tom.

We often hear setting clear goals is the key to success. For years,I believed this,so I always set goals.Sometimes I succeeded, but often I failed. Finally,I realized that my results had little to do with the goals I set but nearly everything to do with the systems I followed.
What do I mean by this? Are goals completely useless?Of course not.Goals are good for setting a direction, but systems are best for making progress. Many problems arise when you spend too much time thinking about your goals and not enough time designing your systems. So why does focusing only on goals fall short?
The first reason is that goals cannot tell winners from losers because they share the same goals.Every athlete wants an Olympic gold medal. Those who won medals made it not just by wanting to—they improved their training systems through daily practice.
Second, achieving a goal only changes your life temporarily.Imagine you have a messy room and you set a goal to clean it.After tidying up,you will have a clean room. But if you keep the same habits, the mess will return. You still end up with the same result because you never changed the system behind it.
Furthermore, goals restrict happiness. We often think, "Once we reach our goal, then we'll be happy." However, when we fall in love with the process,we don't have to wait to be happy. We can be happy anytime our system is running.
Finally,a goal-oriented mindset(思维模式)can create a "yo-yo" effect. Many runners stop training after they cross the finish line because the goal is no longer there to motivate them.So goals aren't good for making long-term progress, but systems keep you improving beyond single achievements.
In short, goals can provide direction and even push you forward in the short term, but eventually a well-designed system will always win.
40.How did the writer realize the importance of the systems? ______
A. By watching videos online.
B. By asking a teacher for advice.
C. By learning from personal experiences.
D. By reading books about successful people.
41.What does the example of athletes mainly tell us? ______
A. Goals alone can't lead to success.
B. A common goal unites all athletes.
C. Talent is the key to winning medals.
D. Only Olympic athletes need good systems.
42.What does the underlined word "restrict" in paragraph 5 mean? ______
A. Limit. B. Create. C. Protect. D. Destroy.
43.Which of the following is an example of the "yo-yo" effect? ______
A. A man saves money day by day.
B. A musician practices daily without goals.
C. A student keeps studying after getting good grades.
D. A person on a diet overeats again after losing weight.
44.Which of the following ideas is the writer most likely to agree with? ______
A. Better late than never.
B. Slow but sure wins the race.
C. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Have you ever heard of Yu Tong Shop?It is the only place in Guangzhou where people make traditional Cantonese pastry molds(广式糕饼模具) by hand. The shop is run by 65-year-old Yu Zhaoji. He has been making molds for over 50 years, continuing a family tradition.Yu's great-great-grandfather started the business about 160 years ago.
For centuries, handmade molds have played an important role in making Cantonese pastries. Before handmade molds started to become less commonly used around the year 2000,Yu Tong Shop was always busy with orders, especially from the 1970s to the 1990s.
Today, there are fewer traditional Cantonese pastry mold makers.Making molds by hand is slow and requires special carving(雕刻) skills. The process makes handmade molds much more expensive than machine-made ones. "Speed is everything today," Yu explained, "but learning this skill takes years of practice." Although machines are faster,Yu believes they can never truly take the place of human hands.
To protect traditions,Guangzhou opened its first intangible cultural heritage district(非物质文化遗产街区) in August 2020.With the support of the government,Yu moved his shop there. Now,he introduces his skills to tourists, and he also teaches them to make molds.
"Some people join me for fun,and others for a challenge," Yu said.He believes handmade items are special and meaningful because they are made with care and carry warmth. He adds, "If you make a mold yourself, even an imperfect one,the pastries made with it will taste better."
(1) What can people do in Yu Tong Shop?
______
(2) After the year 2000,why wasn't Yu Tong Shop as busy as before?
______
(3) What makes handmade molds much more expensive than machine-made ones?
