Good living habits are very important for middle school students. They can not only help us keep healthy and

period (关键时期) of growth and development (发展), developing good living habits is particularly (尤其)
necessary.
First, we need to eat well every day. We must be punctual (准时) for breakfast, because breakfast can provide
us with enough energy for the whole morning’s study. Don’t eat too much junk food like hamburgers, fried chicken
and ice-cream, because they are high in fat, sugar and salt and are bad for our health. Vegetables and fruit are rich
in vitamins and minerals (矿物质), which are good for our body. We should eat more fresh vegetables and fruit
every day to keep our bodies healthy.

sleep quality and make us feel tired and sleepy the next day. Getting up early is good for students, as it allows us to
have enough time to have breakfast, review what we learned the previous day and prepare for the new day’s study.

at three such homes. He thought there were about two or three different giant pandas, because they were different

If the world had the same time, wouldn’t that be scary Let’s find out how time zones work in a simple way.
What are Time Zones
Time zones are like big circles that divide the earth into different parts. Each part has its own time, making it
easier for people to know when it’s morning, noon, or night.
Why do We Need Them
The earth is round, and it takes 24 hours for it to spin (旋转) once around. As it spins, different parts of the
earth face the sun at different times. So when it’s sunny and bright in China, it might be dark in the United States.
The Prime Meridian (本初子午线)
The Prime Meridian is a line (线) that goes from the North Pole to the South Pole, passing through Greenwich,
England. It is the starting place for dividing (划分) time zones. The time there is called UTC, which means
Coordinated Universal Time. And people also call it GMT, which stands for Greenwich Mean Time.
How do We KnowWhat Time Zone We’re in
We can find out what time zone we’re in by looking at a map. In China, for example, we’re in the China
Standard Time (CST)zone, which is 8 hours ahead of UTC. This means when it’s noon in London (UTC), it’s 8:00
p.m. in Beijing.
36. The underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refers to ________.
A. the earth B. the time zone C. the sun D. the time
37. What is the starting place for dividing time zones
A. Beijing, China B. Greenwich, England
C. New York, the USA D. Tokyo, Japan
38. What does GMT stand for
A. Coordinated Universal Time B. China Standard Time
C. Greenwich Mean Time D. Greenwich Universal Time
39. Which activities can help students learn about time zones
①Watch short videos about the earth’s turning.
② Learn about the Prime Meridian on the phone.
③ Have a good rest at home.
④Work out the time difference between Beijing and London.
第 6页/共 12页
