Kerry was a high school student who dreamed of becoming a famous artist and selling her work for lots of money. Her art teacher, Mr. Green, warned her of becoming an artist just to make money. He said art was about loving and enjoying her work, and that it should have meaning and cultural significance. Kerry’s town had a river running through it. She liked walking along the river and seeing all the boats that people lived on instead of houses. It was a different way of life that interested her. One day, she was surprised to see Mr. Green on a boat. He explained that he had bought it to make it look modern, and showed her his designs. Kerry was amazed by the level of detail in the artwork. Mr. Green explained that painting riverboats was a tradition that had been lost in their country. Kerry asked if she could help him do it. Together they worked on the boat for months until it was finished. Kerry decided to try and keep this tradition alive by offering to paint other boats for free. She didn’t make any money, but she had discovered what she liked.

The virtue of intellectual humility (谦逊) is getting much attention. While researchers define it differently, the core of the idea is “recognizing that one’s beliefs and opinions might be incorrect.” But achieving intellectual humility is hard. Overconfidence is a long-lasting problem, faced by many, and does not appear to be improved by education or expertise. Even scientific pioneers can sometimes lack this valuable quality.
A.A.Michelson, the first American to win a Nobel Prize in science, expressed a striking view about the fundamental laws of physics, “It seems probable that most of the grand basic principles have now been firmly established.” Over the next few decades, fundamental physical theory witnessed its most dramatic changes.
Scientists can be mistaken about the accuracy of their own positions. Even so, there is reason to believe such mistakes will go public. But sometimes it takes a long time. Is there a way to encourage the pursuit of new, possibly unpopular scientific ideas, while acknowledging the great value and power of the scientific enterprise as it now stands
Here is where intellectual humility can play a positive role in science. Intellectual humility is not skepticism. It does not imply doubt. An intellectually humble person may have strong commitments to various beliefs and may pursue those commitments with enthusiasm. Their intellectual humility lies in their openness to the possibility that nobody is in possession of the full truth, and that others, too, may have insights, ideas and evidence that should be taken into account when forming their own best judgments.
This openness to inquiry does not, of course, imply that scientists are bound to accept theories they take to be wrong. What we ought to accept is that we too might be wrong, that something good might come of the pursuit of those other ideas and theories, and that tolerating rather than accusing those who pursue such things just might be the best way forward for science and for society.
24.What is the core idea of intellectual humility
A.Questioning everything. B.Avoiding firm beliefs.
C.Agreeing with all others. D.Accepting one’s possible errors.
25.Which of the following words is closest to the underlined word “expertise” in paragraph 1
A.experience. B.speciality. C.authority. D.qualification.
26.What does the example of Michelson suggest about scientists
A.They keep trying different ideas. B.They misjudge their own knowledge.
C.They often question the existing ideas. D.They dislike predicting what will happen.
27.What makes intellectual humility positive in science
A.It rejects unpopular research. B.It tends to avoid firm commitments.
C.It leads to openness to others’ insights. D.It encourages doubts about all old ideas.
根据第一段“The virtue of intellectual humility (谦逊) is getting much attention. While researchers define it differently, the core of the idea is “recognizing that one’s beliefs and opinions might be incorrect.”(理智谦逊的美德正受到越来越多的关注。尽管研究人员对其定义不同,但这一想法的核心是‘认识到自己的信仰和观点可能是错误的’)”可知,理智谦逊的核心思想是认识到自己的信仰和观点可能是错误的,即接受自己可能存在的错误。
25.词句猜测题。根据第一段中“Overconfidence is a long-lasting problem, faced by many, and does not appear to be improved by education or expertise.(过度自信是长期普遍存在的问题,许多人都会遇到,而且似乎不会因教育或expertise而改善)”可知,education(教育)和划线词expertise为并列同类名词,结合后文“Even scientific pioneers can sometimes lack this valuable quality.(即使是科学先驱有时也会缺乏这种宝贵的品质。)”
A. Michelson, the first American to win a Nobel Prize in science, expressed a striking view about the fundamental laws of physics, “It seems probable that most of the grand basic principles have now been firmly established.” Over the next few decades, fundamental physical theory witnessed its most dramatic changes.(第一个获得诺贝尔科学奖的美国人A. A. 密歇尔森对物理学基本定律发表了惊人的观点,‘大多数重要的基本原理似乎都已经牢固确立了。’在接下来的几十年里,基础物理理论经历了最剧烈的变化)”可知,密歇尔森认为重要的基本原理已经牢固确立,但之后基础物理理论却发生了巨大的变化,这说明科学家可能会误判自己的知识。
27.推理判断题。根据第四段“Their intellectual humility lies in their openness to the possibility that nobody is in possession of the full truth, and that others, too, may have insights, ideas and evidence that should be taken into account when forming their own best judgments.(他们的理智谦逊在于,他们愿意接受这样一种可能性:没有人掌握全部真理,其他人在形成自己最佳判断时,也可能有应该考虑到的见解、想法和证据)”可知,理智谦逊使科学家对别人的见解持开放态度,这是理智谦逊在科学领域的积极作用。
C
Duncan Jurman became interested in butterflies when he was around 5 years old. He noticed a couple of caterpillars (毛虫) in his backyard and was attracted by the different ways that caterpillars can disguise (伪装) themselves to stay safe in potentially dangerous surroundings. From there, he started to learn more about caterpillars and butterflies.
Jurman believes that butterflies play a vital role in our ecosystems. They’re very low on the food web, so they support a lot of different species that rely on them. They’re an indicator species for the health of the environment. Once they disappear, everything else is soon to follow.
Jurman’s goal is to transform the landscape of Florida’s Broward County by turning a rough and weedy suburb into a lively butterfly reserve at a time when insect populations are decreasing quickly worldwide. Jurman believes that every flower planted is a potential home and source of food for caterpillars and butterflies. He eventually developed a butterfly-friendly garden in his backyard by researching the different plants that butterflies prefer. He’s already raised and released more than 5,000 butterflies from his garden.
Jurman also launched the Bring Butterflies Back campaign to educate people about butterflies and invite them to join his cause of protecting butterflies. He said that a lot of people are surprised to learn that insects are declining at such an alarming rate, largely because the decline has been so gradual. This phenomenon, known as the shifting baselines theory, helps to explain why people are unwilling to take meaningful action to save the environment.
In 2018, Jurman helped to build a butterfly garden at his high school. The garden has had a regenerative effect on the surrounding environment — birds, native lizards, and other insects have returned in great numbers. Other schools have been inspired to start gardens. “I don’t know if we can ever reach the point that we were once at with butterflies, but I think that if everyone gets involved and starts their own garden, they can make their own impact,” Jurman said.
28.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The food web of insects. B.The competition between species.
C.The potential danger to butterflies. D.The significance of butterflies in nature.
29.Why did Jurman develop a butterfly-friendly garden
A.To boost the number of butterflies.
B.To research butterflies’ favorite plants.
C.To make his backyard attractive to people.
D.To popularize the knowledge of butterflies.
30.Which of the following illustrates the shifting baselines theory
A.Suspension of the campaign.
B.Unwillingness to take action.
C.Alarming decline of butterflies.
D.Unawareness of gradual change.
31.What can be inferred about Jurman from the last paragraph
A.He is passionate about gardening.
B.He is unsure of the survival of butterflies.
C.He will carry on despite an uncertain future.
D.He takes pride in his garden-building efforts.
【答案】28.D 29.A 30.D 31.C
根据第二段“Jurman believes that butterflies play a vital role in our ecosystems. They’re very low on the food web, so they support a lot of different species that rely on them. They’re an indicator species for the health of the environment. Once they disappear, everything else is soon to follow.(尤尔曼认为,蝴蝶在生态系统中至关重要。它们在食物网中处于底层,因此供养着许多依赖它们生存的不同物种。蝴蝶是环境健康的指示物种,一旦它们消失,其他生物很快也会随之消亡。)”可知,本段主要讲蝴蝶在自然界中的重要性。故选D项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段“Jurman’s goal is to transform the landscape of Florida’s Broward County by turning a rough and weedy suburb into a lively butterfly reserve at a time when insect populations are decreasing quickly worldwide. Jurman believes that every flower planted is a potential home and source of food for caterpillars and butterflies. He eventually developed a butterfly-friendly garden in his backyard by researching the different plants that butterflies prefer. 故选A项。
根据第四段“He said that a lot of people are surprised to learn that insects are declining at such an alarming rate, largely because the decline has been so gradual. This phenomenon, known as the shifting baselines theory, helps to explain why people are unwilling to take meaningful action to save the environment.(他说,很多人得知昆虫正以惊人的速度减少时都感到惊讶,这很大程度上是因为这种减少太过缓慢。这种被称为基准转移理论的现象,有助于解释人们为何不愿采取有意义的行动来拯救环境。)”可知,该理论指人们对缓慢变化没有察觉。故选D项。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“I don’t know if we can ever reach the point that we were once at with butterflies, but I think that if everyone gets involved and starts their own garden, they can make their own impact,(我不知道我们能否回到曾经蝴蝶数量繁多的状态,但我认为,如果每个人都参与进来,打造属于自己的花园,就能带来属于自己的积极影响。)”
D
Scientists have learned more about the inner workings of the Earth, The results suggest that the Earth’s inner core may be starting to spin more slowly than the Earth.
The Earth is made up of several layers. The thin, outer layer is called the crust. Below the crust is the mantle, which makes up about 84% of the Earth’s core. The Earth’s core has two parts: the outer Earth. Below the mantle is the core and the inner core, Both of these are made mainly of the metals iron and nickel, The outer core is liquid. But the inner core is a solid ball held in the liquid almost like the yolk in an egg.
Scientists suspected for a long time that the inner core might be spinning slightly differently from the way the Earth spins. In the 1990s, two scientists, Paul Richards and Xiaodong Song, studied the inner core by looking at “seismic waves” — shaking from earthquakes — that travel through the center of the Earth. They focused on groups and pairs of waves from earthquakes that naturally repeat.
If the inner core was spinning exactly with the Earth, each wave of the pair should have taken the same time to pass through the Earth. Instead, some moved faster than others. This was because they were hitting different parts of the inner core as it spun. Their studies revealed that the inner core was spinning in the same direction as the Earth, but slightly faster.
Now Dr Song and Yi Yang say that before 2009, the wave pairs showed that the inner core was spinning faster than the Earth. Around 2009, that seemed to change. The timing of the wave pairs was no longer different. The researchers believe that the inner core had started spinning at the same speed as the Earth.
The researchers noticed that the inner core’s spin also seemed to change speed in the early 1970s. The inner core may have a pattern of speeding up and slowing down every 70 years or so.
Not everyone agrees. Many scientists who study the Earth say more information is needed to figure out what is really going on.
32.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 2
A.Illustrate a concept B.Provide relevant information
C.Give some examples D.Introduce the research ways
33.To study the inner core, scientists analyzed mainly ______.
A.how earthquake waves go through the Earth’s center
B.in which direction the inner core spins
C.how many waves come from an earthquake
D.why waves from earthquakes repeat naturally
34.What do many scientists think of the study result
A.It is absolutely convincing B.It is somewhat reasonable
C.It remains to be tested out D.It has been fully proved
35.What is the best title for the text
A.Is there another inner core in the Earth B.Will the Earth speed up in the future
C.Do earthquakes affect the Earth’s spin D.Is the Earth’s inner core spinning more slowly
【答案】32.B 33.A 34.C 35.D
根据第二段“The Earth is made up of several layers.
根据第三段中“In the 1990s, two scientists, Paul Richards and Xiaodong Song, studied the inner core by looking at “seismic waves” — shaking from earthquakes — that travel through the center of the Earth. (20 世纪 90 年代,两位科学家保罗·里奇尔斯和宋晓东通过研究“地震波”——地震引起的震动——在地球中心传播的情况,来研究内核。)”可知,为了研究地核,科学家通过分析地震波穿过地心的情况研究内核。故选A项。
Many scientists who study the Earth say more information is needed to figure out what is really going on. (并非所有人都认同这一观点。许多研究地球的科学家表示,还需要更多的信息来弄清楚到底发生了什么。)”可知,许多科学家认为这个研究结果还需要进一步的验证。故选C项。
35.主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及第一段“Scientists have learned more about the inner workings of the Earth, The results suggest that the Earth’s inner core may be starting to spin more slowly than the Earth.
In a fast-paced world, mental tiredness is all too common. But it’s more than just being a little tired—it can make you get into trouble, mess with your productivity, and even affect your well-being negatively. 36 , the good news is that there are steps you can take to lift that mental fog and regain clarity.
Take a rest. Give yourself permission to step back and take a mental health break. Working non-stop or living on your worries endlessly will only further your tiredness. 37 , do something that mentally disconnects you from your stressors.
Prioritize effectively and focus on one thing at a time. 38 . Prioritizing tasks can help you focus on what’s important, allowing you to tackle challenges more organized and with less stress. Sometimes the best way to do this is to practice single-tasking where you simply focus on one thing at a time.
39 . An untidy environment can be a small but significant source of stress. Taking the time to tidy your living and working spaces can free up mental energy. Organizing your physical environment can create a sense of order and control. If you feel it difficult to clear your space, start small by clearing your desk first. Then see how you feel and if it motivates you to tidy up other areas.
Write down your thoughts. Sometimes, your mind needs a safe space to unload. 40 It can be particularly useful for tackling problems contributing to mental tiredness, as writing issues down on paper can often make them seem more manageable.
A.Free up mental energy
B.Clear your messy space
C.Unless you are too tired from work
D.Although feeling this way might seem depressing
E.Keeping a journal can provide a way to express your ideas
F.Mental tiredness often comes from having too much on your plate
G.Whether it’s a short break, or just shutting off your phone for an hour

The car turned onto the familiar road that led to Grandma’s farm. “Jude, this summer holiday will be a great chance for you to stay with your grandma,” Dad said as he drove.
The car engine wasn’t off before Grandma hugged me. I slowly dragged myself out of the car. “Jude, you look unhappy. Why ” Grandma asked. She acted like nothing bad had happened last time. Could I ask how much money her neighbor Mr. Jackson had lost because of my mistake Was he still upset with me “I’m fine,” I answered. “I’m just missing my computer puters are something I’m good at.” “That sounds disappointing,” Grandma nodded.
I liked visiting the farm during breaks before I messed things up last summer. Grandma lived alone, and Mr. Jackson was like family to her. Then one day I forgot to lock the gate and let the goats into his flower beds. He lost almost all his roses for the farmers’ market.
Now, back at the farm, I felt nervous. I was trying to hide in the room when I saw Mr. Jackson! He was opening the door and calling Grandma. “I need help!” he yelled. “Just a second for the freshly harvested roses!” That was when he saw me. I felt my heart tighten and was ready for his criticism. I deserved it. He had probably been waiting for this moment since last summer.
However, Mr. Jackson greeted me happily, “Great, Jude is here! Your grandma always tells us you are a wonderfully competent computer programmer.” I shook my head. “I am not competent. I am sorry I messed things up.” He was surprised and comforted me, “It was an accident. Being competent doesn’t mean you never make mistakes.”
I looked out of the window. There were piles of roses waiting to be sold. “Jude, can you help us We want to sell roses online. We have a computer and all the parts for our internet connection, but we just can’t set it up,” Grandma asked. No internet. They seemed to live in the 20th century.

One possible version:
Maybe I could be someone who was really competent. “I can definitely help with that! It was a piece of cake to me.” Following Grandma, I went into the room, where a computer sat surrounded by some scattered parts. I carefully connected everything. After a few adjustments, the Internet was up and running. “Done!” I announced confidently. Now it was time to sell the roses. I decided to start from my social media platform. I quickly uploaded photos, added descriptions, and set prices. Soon, people were noticing. My abilities made a difference!
Within a few hours, orders for roses flooded in. “This is amazing, Jude!” Grandma cheered joyfully as she packed flowers. Mr. Jackson smiled warmly and handed me another bunch to label. The energy was electric — everyone moved quickly to keep up with orders. The farm felt alive, and so did I. Surprisingly, the roses sold out in half a day. “You’ve brought the farm into the twenty-first century,” Grandma hugged me tightly. I realized competence wasn’t avoiding mistakes, but facing them and making the most of my strengths.
