Starting with the new school year, students in 17 more US states will face new cellphone rules, bringing the total to 35 out of 50 states. Among these states, some ban (禁止) phones throughout the whole school day, while others only ban them during class, allowing use between classes or at lunch.
This change has come remarkably quickly, as Florida became the first state in the country to pass such a law in 2023. The number of states adopting rules or laws to limit phone use is growing with rising public support. According to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in June, 74 percent of US adults said they would support banning middle and high school students from using cellphones during class, up from 68 percent last fall.
However, this support didn’t come out of nowhere. Writer Gail Cornwall noted in The Atlantic magazine that having a phone nearby reduces interaction with others because notifications (通知) make people want to check their phones. Teenagers find it even harder to resist this urge because their brains are still developing.
The urge (欲望) to check phones isn’t just about the brain; it’s also social. Cornwall explained that many teens feel they need to be online all the time to keep up with friends. Being slow to respond can hurt friendships, causing “digital stress”, which can lead to lack of focus and even depression.
For students, the rules have added new school-day routines. “Most of them did not want to turn in their phones” at first, a student at McNair High School in Atlanta said. Now, that resentment (怨恨) is starting to fade.
Teachers appreciate the ban. Surveys by Emory University showed that teachers had noticed better concentration and more positive interactions among students. However, some experts said it’s not yet clear whether the ban has long-term benefits.
Meanwhile, many parents are against the ban. The US National Parental Union said that parents’ main concern is keeping their children safe during school emergencies. They believe direct communication with their children is important because schools often fail to communicate effectively.
The debate continues, but school smartphone bans reflect growing concerns about youth mental health and school performance.

While we race into a future where we outsource (外包) most of our problem-solving to artificial intelligence, the greatest threat is not super intelligent machinery. It’s mindlessly putting too much trust in Big Tech and not enough trust in the power of our own minds.
A philosophy of artful thinking is a good way to avoid this. To think artfully means to solve problems using not just our brains, but also our hands, eyes, and ears, along with our emotions. This approach taps into the cognitive (认知的) resources that are spread throughout our bodies but often go unused.
Changing how we think is hard work. And it starts with a mindfulness practice. Accessing artful intelligence requires being mindful of how we think with our body, how we use our limbs (四肢), organs, and emotions to make sense of the world. Be mindful of all the different messages your body is sending you as well as the different roles and functions your bodily actions can play. For example, gesturing (做手势) in conversations is not just communicative. These movements often help the speaker to smooth out their thought process and assist in getting the words out.
Today, Big Tech is pushing a message of artificial-intelligence craziness and fear. What makes you stuck in it It’s seeing the same things wherever you look. Big Tech gives you screens, hoping that your attention will always be attracted by their devices. If you want to find more freedom in this AI-filled world, improve your ability to mindfully shift your attention between different objects or levels of focus. Remember everything is born of a choice.
Artful thinking demands effortful mindfulness to ensure that what we do, what we hope to achieve by using these technological tools, will not weaken our humanity. As Thich Nhat Hanh said, “Mindful living is an art, and each of us has to train to be an artist.”
8. According to the author, what is the primary threat posed by over-trusting Big Tech
A. It will cause people to rely entirely on screens for communication.
B. It may lead to the rapid development of super intelligent machinery.
C. It could weaken our ability to think and to use our minds independently.
D. It prevents artificial intelligence from solving complex problems effectively.
9. What is supposed to be included in a mindfulness practice
A. Concentrating on making proper gestures.
B. Being aware of our body’s role in thinking.
C. Attaching importance to different body parts.
D. Laying emphasis on nonverbal communication.
10. Why does the author mention gesturing during conversations
A. To argue that people should speak less and gesture more.
B. To show that body language is more effective than speech.
C. To illustrate how physical actions can support and clarify thinking.
D. To emphasize the importance of nonverbal communication in AI development.
11. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Dangers of Artificial Intelligence
B. The Art of Mindful Thinking in the AI Age
C. How to Improve Communication Through Gestures
D. The Greatest Threat of Super Intelligent AI Machinery

The freezing weather and cold winds made Derek shiver (颤抖) as he opened the bus door, and a group of cute little kids boarded the bus.
“Come on, kids! The weather’s killing me! Grrr...” he shivered. The youngsters laughed. “Ask your mommy to get you a new scarf, Derek!” joked a little girl. “Oh, sweetie, I wish my momma were alive. She’d get me a scarf that is much prettier than yours!” he said, making the girl smile.
Derek was a sweet man who always had a big smile on his face when he drove the school bus. The kids’ warm laughs made his day. He loved his job, despite the not-so-handsome salary. The school where he worked said it would give its excellent workers an increase in salary, but Derek wasn’t hopeful because he thought he was just a common driver.
Due to the thick ice on the road that day, Derek drove his bus slowly and carefully for the kids’ safety. When they arrived at school, he told the kids to be careful when getting off. “Don’t slip and hurt yourselves on the ice, guys!”
As the little kids left the bus, Derek decided to get a cup of warm coffee from the cafe across the school. “Drinking coffee would be the best way to resist the cold weather,” he thought excitedly.
Before getting off, he found a kid was still sitting at the back of the bus, sobbing softly. “Hey, kid,” he called out, “you aren’t going to class today ” The little boy shook his head.
The boy was Aiden. His old gloves were worn out and his hands were cold. However, he didn’t ask his parents to buy him a new pair because he knew they were struggling financially.

【答案】
He approached the boy and noticed him hiding his hands behind him. “I’m just too cold,” Aiden replied sadly and showed his hands to Derek, which terrified him. The little kid’s hands were freezing and had turned blue from the cold. Derek quickly took off his gloves and made the boy wear them. “Did you lose your gloves ” Derek asked. The boy shook his head and explained why. Derek felt terrible for the boy and decided to do something for him.
Derek led Aiden to a store nearby. He bought him a pair of gloves as well as a scarf. The boy hugged Derek and thanked him. Tears welled up in his eyes as the boy hugged him. Later, Derek bought more gloves and scarves and left them on his bus with a card nearby, which read, “If you feel cold, take something from here.” Because of his acts of kindness, Derek was finally recognized as an excellent employee by the school and got an increase in salary. Derek was surprised and proud.
