Places Where You Can Watch Lava(岩浆) Flow
Erta Ale, Ethiopia
Erta Ale is Ethiopia’s most active volcano with a lava lake in the volcano’s crater(火山口).The journey to Erta Ale begins with a five-hour drive through the desert in difficult wind and sand conditions. From the base of Erta Ale, tourists make a three-hour tough hike to the crater, where they watch the lava, which has been flowing since 1906.
Mount Nyiragongo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Mount Nyiragongo has the world’s largest lava lake in its crater. The most recent major eruption occurred in 2002, sending lava flowing into the city of Goma and killing many people. The volcano also erupted in May of 2021.Tourists can take a guided hiking tour up the mountain in four to seven hours. They should remember to pack warm clothes because Mount Nyiragongo is extremely cold at the top.
Pacaya, Guatemala
Guatemala’s Pacaya has been erupting continuously since 1961.The fact that it’s close to Antigua and less than 20 miles from Guatemala City makes it an especially popular tourist attraction. You can get to this volcano by renting a horse or hiking. It’s a fairly easy one-hour journey, and once there, you get close to the lava to see volcanic activity.
Villarrica, Chile
Villarrica is a permanently active volcano near Pucon. This volcano has a small lava lake in its crater. The most recent major eruption was in 2015, when thousands of people were evacuated(疏散).Tourists can join guided hikes to the crater or fly over it.The hike is extremely hard and can be icy at high places during winter.

A dropped bag of chips disturbed a cave ecosystem in Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico. This cave is almost cut off from the outside world, so introducing anything foreign can be harmful.“Things in the damp cave get wet quickly,” says park guide Ashley. The snack attracts tiny organisms, causing unwanted growth.Soon, small animals like crickets and spiders came to eat, spreading the pollution.Rangers found the bag within hours.“But that can be all it takes,”says Ashley.“I’m sure some crickets got a bit of the snack.”
Over 500 million people visit American public lands each year, creating many chances to harm wild places.“When you look at the numbers, it’s incredible,” says Watts, head of the Leave No Trace Center in Colorado, an organization aimed at minimizing human impact on nature.
Food waste takes a long time to break down, especially in certain areas.“It takes much longer for an apple core to rot in a desert than in a forest,” says Blye, a teacher at the University of Utah.Leaving waste introduces animals to an unnatural diet and changes their behavior with sometimes disastrous results.Bears that taste garbage and become a threat to humans may have to be put down.“Bears can get used to unnatural food in three weeks,” says Watts.“Everyone loses in this case.”
Biological waste is also problematic.Dog waste brings new bacteria into the ecosystem and scares away deer.Meanwhile, human waste and toilet paper introduce dangerous bacteria into water sources.
In national parks, trails(小路) are designed to avoid sensitive areas.Stepping off the trail, even for a quick photo, can scare wildlife away.Impacts from many visitors result in long-term damage to nature and wildlife. But people don’t think of that when they see the perfect photo opportunity.“It’s just such a hard thing to resist,” says Blye. The risk to sensitive ecosystems isn’t obvious.“It’s easy to think, oh, there are wildflowers over there.I shouldn’t step on that,” says Blye, but these tiny ecosystems full of microscopic organisms essential to desert life provide many benefits, including reducing the risk of erosion (侵蚀) and helping absorb rainfall, and can take hundreds of years to return to their original state.

Vacations are an essential part of every person’s life.Following long seasons of hard work, it is well deserving to get away from busy schedules and enjoy nature.
While tourism is good, it has its dark side.Besides emission-based pollution, tourism also contributes heavily to plastic pollution. This kind of pollution can be reduced by advocating for sustainable vacationing. 1 When it comes to ecotourism, your inspiration for others to take action is equally important.
2 If a park says no to feeding wildlife, simply avoid feeding them. Most times, what we interpret as affection for wildlife puts them at risk.If parks allowed every person to feed animals, chances of the animals dying from food poisoning would be high.
In our efforts to protect nature, we may fail to appreciate other people’s cultures. The local communities in the Amazon are a part of the forest’s life. When you visit such local communities, you may find them participating in some practices that may seem unfriendly to the ecosystem or wildlife. 3 Trying to listen and interact with communities opens more doors to bring in change than criticism does.
Most people are not sustainability-conscious. 4 We have many ways to be sustainable and one is sharing our ideas. The sustainable option you choose may seem absurd to another person. However, sharing your experience may help others have different perspectives.
At the end of the day, sustainable vacationing should help you not only reduce negative environmental impact but also awaken society to such a reality. 5 However, every small step contributes to a more sustainable world.
A.No rule fits all situations concerning this topic.
B.The reason for this is that they think it cannot be achieved.
C.Protect our lives from potential danger by following regulations.
D.The best way to care for nature and wildlife is to follow the rules.
E.Instead of being critical, take your time to learn from their practices.
F.An ecotourist focuses on protecting nature, culture and social practices.
G.The term ecotourism is often used interchangeably with sustainable tourism.

If you struggle to fit exercise into your busy workweek but find time to work out on weekends or days off, you might be considered a “weekend warrior”.This term can sometimes carry a hostile meaning, implying a lack of commitment to regular exercise. However, recent research suggests that those who concentrate their workouts into one or two days can enjoy similar health benefits to those who exercise consistently throughout the week, if they complete the same total amount of exercise.
The World Health Organization(WHO) recommends that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of high intensity exercise each week to maintain good health.A study conducted by researchers in China specifically explored the effects of weekend warrior work on brain health. They employed data from over 75,000 individuals in the UK and categorized participants into three groups: those who exercised regularly throughout the week, those who only exercised on weekends, and those who did not exercise at all.
The study followed participants, averaging 62 years of age, for about eight years. The findings were striking: weekend warriors exhibited a comparable reduction in their risks of developing conditions such as dementia and depression, similar to those who exercised consistently throughout the week. The researchers concluded that the critical factor influencing health outcomes was not the frequency of exercise but rather the total amount of exercise performed.
In a related study of the US, which involved nearly 90,000 participants in the UK, researchers confirmed this idea. They found that anyone who engaged in at least 150 minutes of exercise at any point during the week significantly reduced their risk of developing over 200 diseases compared to those who did not meet this exercise standard.
In conclusion, there is no inherent problem with being a weekend warrior. As long as individuals are meeting the recommended exercise guidelines, the timing of their work is less important than previously thought.

A new global review of data from the Spanish study found that increasing the number of daily steps, even if at modest levels, was associated with a reduction in depressive symptoms(症状).Researchers led by Jimenez-Lopez of the University of Castile-La Mancha noted there’s already solid evidence that exercise of any kind is a natural antidepressant. But what about something as easy as walking To find out, they looked at data from high-quality studies on daily step counts and their links to mental health.
The new review covered 33 studies with a total of more than 96,000 adults worldwide, including those who used fitness-tracker devices to calculate their daily pared to a baseline of 5,000 steps taken per day, folks who took even 1,000 more steps daily saw a 9% drop in their chances for developing depression, the researchers found. Those benefits quickly mounted pared to folks walking 5,000 steps per day or less, those who walked 7,000 steps per day had a 31% lower chance for depression.“In addition, counts above 7,500 steps per day were associated with a 43% lower frequency of depression,” Jimenez-Lopez and colleagues wrote, and those trends held true for “all age groups, females and males”. There did seem to be a leveling out of mental health benefits at about 10,000 steps per day, the data showed.
As has been observed in studies on mental health, up to a level of about 10,000 steps per day causes the chances for depression to decline. However, the researchers revealed that increasing the number of steps beyond this point may not lead to a significant reduction in depressive symptoms.
Furthermore, the new findings add walking to many other forms of physical activity—weight training, yoga and even Tai Chi—as ways to help prevent depression.“Setting goals for the number of daily steps can be a rewarding and inclusive public health strategy for the prevention of depression,” the study suggested.

B.It looks into effects of any exercise.

In recent years, extreme sports have been gaining more and more popularity among people of all ages. 1 From the adrenaline-pumping excitement of skydiving to the precise balance required in rock climbing, extreme sports offer a unique experience that traditional sports often can’t match.
One of the main attractions of extreme sports is the sense of accomplishment they bring.Overcoming the challenges in extreme sports gives people a profound sense of achievement. For example, successfully completing a difficult rock-climbing route or landing a complex snowboarding trick gives athletes a feeling of pride and self-confidence. 2
Another appealing aspect is the freedom of self-expression.Unlike traditional team sports, extreme sports are often individual-based. 3 Whether it’s the way a skateboarder maneuvers through a skate park or how a surfer rides the waves, extreme sports allow for a high degree of self-expression.
However, extreme sports also come with significant risks. 4 Equipment failure, human error, or unexpected environmental conditions can all lead to serious injuries. For instance, a paraglider might encounter sudden strong winds that can cause a dangerous descent, and a base jumper risks miscalculating the landing area. Therefore, proper training, high-quality equipment, and a deep understanding of safety procedures are crucial for anyone involved in extreme sports.
5 The shared passion for these high-risk activities creates a strong sense of community.Extreme sports enthusiasts often gather at popular spots, exchange experiences, and support each other. They also share tips on equipment, training methods, and safety measures. This tight-knit community not only provides a platform for learning but also offers emotional support, making the extreme sports experience even more rewarding.
A.Participants can set their own goals and practice at their own pace.
B.They attract individuals who are eager to test their limits and seek new thrills.
C.Despite the risks, extreme sports also foster a unique sense of community.
D.These sports demand a combination of physical strength, and mental toughness.
E.When engaged in extreme sports, people always forget about their daily troubles.
F.The potential for injury is much higher compared to regular sports.
G.This can help conquer the physical challenge and push mental boundaries.

While technological advancements have enhanced the convenience of urban commuting in recent years, environmental studies reveal a worrying decline in urban green spaces, especially in densely populated districts. Many residents complain that there’s insufficient access to nature-filled areas for relaxation and exercise, so they end up spending more time indoors, relying on virtual entertainment.
Urban planners Lila Chen and Ryan Moore are deeply troubled by such issues. In their newly released book Green Living: Reclaim Our Cities’ Natural Spaces, they call for a fundamental rethinking of urban design and the role greenery should play in our daily lives.
The landscape of urban living began to shift decades ago.Vast areas of natural vegetation were cleared to make room for sprawling concrete structures and commercial centers, forcing residents to seek nature in distant suburbs. Some grassroots groups fought back. Most notably, a community organizer from Seattle, who relocated to the city in the early 2000s, launched a movement to save a local wetland area from being converted into a shopping mall.Expressing her outrage at the planned destruction, Emily Clark appealed to the city council to “Preserve Seattle as a city where nature and urban life coexist harmoniously, not just a place of concrete and commerce.” Similar initiatives took place in other major cities across the country in the 2010s.
Although these initiatives(措施) gained public attention, the harsh reality is that the majority of modern cities remain overwhelmingly dominated by urban development at the expense of green spaces. The coverage of natural areas in cities has been shrinking steadily. In California, for instance, the ratio of urban green spaces to total city area has dropped to a record low, even as the state promotes environmental protection campaigns.
We invest substantial resources in building urban infrastructure that prioritizes speed and efficiency, yet we neglect to consider the true value of green spaces.Do we fully comprehend the social and psychological costs when citizens lack easy access to natural environments for mental rejuvenation The authors of Green Living are spot-on: it’s high time we should reevaluate the urban landscapes right outside our homes.

“Shhh!” This is the demand that eco-acoustics(生态声学) researcher Jér me Sueur makes of humanity. The noises of technology spread across even the remotest corners of the planet.Sueur explores the impact of the ever-present sound on the animal world in Natural History of Silence.
Between travelogue-style chapters and philosophical reflections, the book covers many key terms and theories, such as the acoustic niche hypothesis(声学生态位假说), which assumes that each species has its own acoustic space to improve communication with its own kind and limit sound competition from other species.Sueur’s point is this: silence is a crucial resource, like food or water, which species compete for to survive.“Making sound is important,” he writes. But humans need to “make sure we are not more alive than others”.
When the pandemic(流行病) unexpectedly put human activities on hold, noise-monitoring organizations in France recorded a 60%-75% drop in sound levels in many cities.Globally, wildlife communication changed during lockdowns.Fish and dolphins off the coast of New Zealand extended the range of their calls by 65% owing to a sharp reduction in boat travel. However, when humans emerged from their homes, so did all human-generated sounds and their harmful effects on natural systems, Sueur writes.
Sueur calls for a greater awareness of the need to preserve zones where noise is not welcome, effectively proposing a global network of silent shelters for wildlife. The book, thus, highlights an imaginary dividing line between humanity and nature—an approach to conservation that has thwarted contemporary environmentalists who believe true conservation success comes from building a harmonious bond with nature. Some even argue against it in public and attempt to seek more all-round solutions that involve local and indigenous(本土) communities.
To encourage readers to act, the book could have included stories about successful no-fly zones where communities are working to address the problem. But the focus on solutions is narrow.Instead, his winding and wordy writing often carries a tone of anger, which could drive away the people he wants to silence.

I was invited to a cookout on an old friend’s farm in western Washington.I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years.A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it.It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs (蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in.The broken window glass was the likely answer.I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes.I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings.Still, she made no attempt to fly.Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired Or too thirsty
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move.I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away.
Hovering (悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car.I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me.She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say goodbye.”

For Antonella Positano, her passion for art and architecture traces back to her childhood.“As a child, I loved creating imaginary houses with toy bricks, and many of my childhood drawings were about landscapes and little houses,” the artist recalled.Today, this love serves as the foundation of her architectural illustrations, made with dynamic lines of black ink that breathe life into these buildings.
“The purpose when I choose an architectural subject to represent is to highlight its essence(本质) through my hands,” Positano said.“I often let myself be guided by the interaction I feel with a particular subject, but it’s almost always them choosing me, not the other way around.I don’t have any particular preferences.”
As a fan of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, she always looks for volume that can translate into strong contrasts and let her play with shadows.Positano, who is about to finish her Architecture degree, uses high-quality photographs as references for her illustrations.“The images allow me to carefully analyze the particulars and work calmly on the composition, reflecting on the final result I want to achieve,” she explained.“I use them as references, but they’re never a guide to follow strictly for completing the work; at that point, it would just be a faithful copy, and I love authenticity(真实性).”
While she has experimented with other tools, Positano admits that nothing matches the excitement of black ink.“I enjoy how using a pen lets me control the thickness of the lines as I want.I use ink in my work because I see it as the link between the past and the present.”
Ultimately, Positano shares that she doesn’t seek recognition or commercial success but the power to move others through the universal language of architecture.“I know I’ve succeeded when I see emotions like inspiration in the eyes of those who view my works at exhibitions.”

Music is an important part of many people’s lives. It can be an enjoyable way to relax or to express emotions. 8 Understanding how music stress works and what can bring it on can help individuals better manage it.
Music stress is a term used to describe a feeling of tension or unease that can arise from listening to or playing music. This can appear in different ways, ranging from physical reactions to mental disturbances.Music stress can be caused by many factors. 9
For instance, certain types of music can call forth an emotional response, such as nostalgia(怀旧) or sadness. 10 Likewise, certain kinds of noise-like music, which make disharmonious sounds, can cause people to become overwhelmed(使不知所措).While this can be helpful for some special purposes, in some cases it can be difficult to handle and even add to stress.
In addition to being caused by musical elements, music stress can also result from the psychological context where the music is heard or played.Take those who feel overwhelmed as an example. 11 Similarly, if someone takes listening to music as a way to escape current problems, the music can create a feeling of disappointment due to its failing to provide the desired effect.
12 Thus, the best way to prevent it is to ensure that the music being listened to or played is appropriate for one’s current mood and state of mind.Alternatively, if one is already feeling stressed, it may be better to focus on relaxation exercises or to take a break from music entirely.
A.This can lead to increased stress levels.
B.However, it may also lead to high stress levels.
C.Music stress is caused by a specific type of music.
D.And it can produce very specific types of reactions.
E.Music may give them the feeling that they are not in control.

5.What does the acoustic niche hypothesis assume
A.Species use sounds to communicate.
B.Each species has a unique sound range.
C.Species compete for sound resources.
D.Making sound is the key to survival.
【解析】选B。细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Between travelogue-style chapters and philosophical reflections, the book covers many key terms and theories, such as the acoustic niche hypothesis, which assumes that each species has its own acoustic space to improve communication with its own kind and limit sound competition from other species.”可知,声学生态位假说认为每个物种都有自己的声学空间,即有独特的声音范围,以促进与同类的交流并限制来自其他物种的声音竞争。故选B。
6.Why are fish and dolphins mentioned in Paragraph 3
A.To show the destruction caused by the pandemic.
B.To stress the role of animals in the local ecosystem.
C.To illustrate the impact of human activities on wildlife.
D.To compare responses of different animals to lockdowns.
7.What does the underlined word “thwarted” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Enlightened. B.Transformed.
C.Misled. D.Discouraged.
8.What can we learn about the book from the last paragraph
A.It is written in an objective tone.
B.It serves its writing purpose well.
C.It fails to relate to certain readers.
D.It conveys rather shallow ideas.

A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. As my car neared it my thoughts drifted back to the moment when I rescued the hummingbird from spider-webs.I rushed back to the deserted house. It was a great comfort that the original hole in the window was nowhere to be found.Leaving the house, I couldn’t help wondering how she was getting on now.Had she managed to find her way back home, or was she still out there somewhere struggling to survive
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared.A flash of movement caught my attention.I turned around to see the same hummingbird hovering in the air.It seemed that the bird was waiting for me, her beady eyes locked on mine as if trying to convey some deep, unspoken gratitude.I felt a surge of relief and awe at the sight of this sound and grateful creature, and I knew that I would always cherish the memories we shared as I climbed into my car and drove away.

Why Lunar New Year prompts one of the world’s
largest annual migrations
Celebrated around the world, Lunar New Year usually prompts the planet’s largest annual migration of people. And though it is known to some in the West as Chinese New Year, it isn’t just celebrated in China. It is traditionally a time for family reunions, plenty of food, and some very loud celebrations.
What is Lunar New Year
Modern China actually uses a Gregorian calendar like most of the rest of the world. Its holidays, however, are governed by its traditional lunisolar calendar(阴阳历法) which may have been in use from as early as the 21st century B.C.When the newly founded Republic of China officially adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1912, its leaders rebranded the observation of the Lunar New Year as the Spring Festival, as it is known in China today.
As its name suggests, the date of the Lunar New Year depends on the phase of the moon and varies from year to year. Each year in the lunar calendar is named one of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, which are derived from ancient Chinese folklore. On a rotating basis, these animals are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.
How Lunar New Year is celebrated
On the eve of the New Year, Chinese families traditionally celebrate with a massive reunion dinner.Considered the year’s most important meal, it is traditionally held in the house of the oldest family member.
The holiday may be getting more modern, but millennia-old traditions are still held dear in China and other countries. In China, people customarily light firecrackers, which are thought to chase away the fearful monster Nian.(However, the tradition has been on the decline in recent years due to air pollution.) The color red is used in clothing and decorations to ensure prosperity, and people exchange red envelopes filled with lucky money.
Meanwhile in Korea, people make rice cake soup and honor their ancestors during Seollal. And during Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, flowers play an important role in the celebrations.
Lunar New Year has even spawned(引发) its own form of travel—chunyun. During it, hundreds of millions of people travel to their hometowns in China for family reunions and New Year’s celebrations.Known as one of the world’s largest human migrations, chunyun regularly clogs busy roads, train stations and airports, which proves the holiday’s enduring significance for those who associate it with luck and love.

The traditional Chinese sport of dragon boat racing has swept across Latin America over the last decade.Popular with sports enthusiasts and amateurs, it has spread from one country to another. The vigorous sport requires 22 people to work together as one unit. They have to learn to be a complete crew and understand it’s necessary to work together for the common good.
As a competitive event, it has quickly attracted enthusiastic paddlers looking to stay fit.But somewhat unexpectedly it has also attracted enthusiasts who have discovered its significant healing benefits. This is particularly true among women recovering from breast cancer.
While team training is demanding, dragon boat groups have helped breast cancer survivors thrive—overcoming not just cancer, but any doubts about their capabilities on the water. This was the goal of Floribeth Campos de Finizio, president of Pink Warriors Panama, when she started the dragon boat team with 14 members several years ago.
Originally setting out to inspire survivors to “move forward after cancer”, Pink Warriors Panama has grown to a 40-member team.“Many of the women who row today had never done sports before, so this is a great achievement for a group like ours,” de Finizio said.“We are incredibly proud of everything we’ve achieved. We proved that it’s possible to become athletes after cancer.”
A growing pool of academic research has shown that dragon boat racing can make a significant difference in helping survivors who have undergone breast cancer treatment or surgery to recover.Research pioneered by Don McKenzie at Canada’s University of British Columbia in 1996 found paddling helps cancer survivors avoid painful swelling caused by the tumour removal.
Inspired by McKenzie’s work and subsequent research, “pink boat” events have sprouted across Latin America.Teams promote the fitness and team-building benefits of joining a dragon boat team while spreading the word about its health benefits.

Most of us are pretty good at celebrating our big wins: moving house, getting married, or passing a driving test. But what about all the small wins along the way 8 So, here are some ways to celebrate your wins, no matter the size.
Pause and slow down
When you achieve a small win, don’t simply carry on with the next task on your to-do list, or soften the progress you’ve made.Instead, practise intentionally pausing and slowing down after your small win. 9 It can also strengthen the positive feelings, and remind you that progress, however small, still counts.
 10
Expressing thanks comes with many benefits, from stress relief to improved sleep.Make the most of this by writing a letter, email, or text message to someone who has helped you achieve your small win.
Record the moment
Take a photo, write a poem, or record a voice note about how you feel when you reach your milestone. These moments become reminders on harder days. 11 Over time, you’ll build a lot of moments that show just how far you’ve come.
Create a “win” wall
If you’re working on smaller steps to achieve a long-term goal, tracking your progress step-by-step can be an excellent way to stay inspired.Say you are training for a marathon, for example, which takes a huge amount of planning, efforts, and requires running many times a week.Write down the date and details of every run on a whiteboard, or a large sheet of paper on your wall. 12
A.Share with friends
B.Write a thank-you note
C.They prove that progress is happening.
D.The answer is sure—life is made up of little moments.
E.Doing so can make you think about what you have achieved.
F.Sometimes, the small wins aren’t necessarily recognised by the society.
G.You could even use some running-themed pictures to decorate your “win” wall.

(2026·西安模拟)
Josh Klein is a pioneer in finding creative solutions to one of the world’s most pressing environmental problems: food waste.According to the Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO), approximately one-third of the food produced worldwide is wasted every year, which amounts to about 1.3 billion tons.Josh, however, isn’t just talking about the problem—he’s actively working to solve it.
Josh Klein founded Spoiler Alert, a startup that helps businesses manage and reduce food waste by connecting surplus(过剩的) food with charitable organizations and food banks. The platform allows companies to sell or donate food that might otherwise go to waste, creating a win-win situation for both businesses and communities in need.
Josh’s journey into the world of food waste innovation began while he was working in the tech industry. He realized that just like many other industries, food production and distribution could benefit from more efficient management. His company, Spoiler Alert, uses technology to provide real-time data for businesses, helping them track food waste and make more informed decisions.By streamlining(提高……效率) food distribution and connecting businesses with organizations in need, Josh’s platform helps to redirect millions of pounds of food away from landfills.
One of the most important aspects of Josh’s approach is the use of technology to solve a real-world problem.Through data analytics and a user-friendly interface, Spoiler Alert has transformed the way companies think about waste.Instead of seeing excess food as a loss, businesses are now able to see it as a valuable resource that can benefit others.
Josh’s work not only reduces food waste but also helps provide food for those who need it most. His platform has already been adopted by large companies in the food industry, and it continues to grow as more businesses recognize the potential of reducing waste while giving back to their communities.
Through his innovation, Josh Klein is showing the world how technology and entrepreneurship(企业家精神) can make a meaningful impact on society.By tackling food waste, he is helping to create a more sustainable future for everyone.

As most Americans spend at least 50% of their food budget dining out, public criticism falls on restaurants to help consumers make healthier food choices. The Menu Labeling Final Rule has come into effect, requiring restaurants with more than 20 locations to show the calories of food on menus.
By representing these values(数值) in a discrepant way—intentionally using physically larger size of numbers on the page for lower-calorie options, and smaller size of numbers for higher-calorie foods—businesses can shift customers’ preferences toward healthier food, according to Ruiying Cai from the Washington State University.
In their study, Cai and her colleagues asked participants to choose between a less healthy item and a healthier option after randomly assigning them to two groups. In the first group, calorie counts and font(字体) sizes rose and fell together. In the second group, the size became larger as the calorie count fell.Researchers also asked participants questions to assess their health consciousness.
Results showed participants in the second group, who saw low calorie counts printed in large sizes, were more likely to adopt the healthier option. Moreover, less health-conscious participants were the most affected, while people with more health awareness were less influenced since they already favored healthier food.
This research adjusted customer behaviors by creating a Stroop effect.Named after psychologist John Ridley Stroop, the Stroop effect refers to a delay in reaction to mismatch in its classic form. For example, if the word “purple” is written in green, it takes respondents longer time to identify the color than if the word and the color match.Similarly, the effect is observed when the physical size of the number does not match its number in this study.
“Restaurants are interested in encouraging customers to make healthier choices,” Cai said. However, simply labeling the food as healthy may not have the intended effect.“Healthy food items could be profitable for restaurants, but whenever a ‘healthy’ label is attached, people may assume it does not taste good,” she explained.“We’re trying to provide restaurants with indirect suggestions, rather than saying it out loud.”
【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了华盛顿州立大学一项研究,该研究通过改变菜单上卡路里数值的字体大小来影响顾客对食物的选择,从而鼓励顾客做出更健康的选择。
5.What does the underlined word “discrepant” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Creative. B.Relative.
C.Inconsistent. D.Misleading.
6.What kind of customers would be affected most according to the research
A.Strict diet followers.
B.Convenience food lovers.
C.Home-cooking advocates.
D.Health magazine readers.
7.In Cai’s study, the Stroop effect is mainly reflected in _______.
A.the tendency to choose healthy food due to calories
B.the effect of customers’ preference for larger-sized food
C.the influence of color-word mismatch on people’s judgment
D.the delay in reaction when number sizes mismatch their values
【解析】选D。细节理解题。根据第五段可知,在蔡的研究中,Stroop效应主要体现在当数字的大小与其数值不匹配时,人们的反应会出现延迟。故选D。
8.Which of the following might be Cai’s suggestion for restaurants
A.Remove calorie information from menus.
B.Use font magic to drive healthier choices.
C.Pay more attention to the taste of the food.
D.Attach healthy labels to food on the menu.
【解析】选B。推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Healthy food items could be profitable for restaurants, but whenever a ‘healthy’ label is attached, people may assume it does not taste good,” she explained.“We’re trying to provide restaurants with indirect suggestions, rather than saying it out loud.”

【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了人类活动,特别是游客在自然保护区的不当行为,对自然环境造成的负面影响。
4.What does Ashley mean by “But that can be all it takes”
A.The rangers’ work is efficient.
B.The damage has been done.
C.The cleanup takes a long time.
D.The pollution has spread widely.
【解析】选B。词句猜测题。根据文章画线句子上文“Soon, small animals like crickets and spiders came to eat, spreading the pollution.” 所以 Ashley说“But that can be all it takes”意思是损害已经造成了。故选B。
5.What is a result of foreign waste in public lands
A.A shift in animal behavior.
B.A shortage of food supplies.
C.A decline in bacterial species.
D.An increase in regional conflicts.
【解析】选A。细节理解题。根据文章第三段可知,在公共土地上留下的外来垃圾会让动物接触到非自然的食物,进而改变它们的行为,有时还会带来灾难性的后果。故选A。
6.Why does the writer mention wildflowers in Paragraph 5
A.To praise their benefits to desert life.
B.To highlight our damage to ecosystems.
C.To stress their significance for photography.
D.To show our unawareness of nature’s sensitivity.
7.What is conveyed in this passage that we should do
A.Encourage wildlife protection.

F.Generally, music stress is determined by one’s mental state at the time.
G.In some ways, music stress is similar to more general experiences of stress.
