In Mexico, Luke and a team of scientists discovered a lost Maya city. It was covered by thick forests for centuries. The Mayans lived there over 1,000 years ago. They were good at farming, writing, maths and building amazing stone buildings like temples and palaces.
▲ The main reason was that most work had to be done by hand to make a discovery. Scientists had to cut down overgrown plants as they walked through the forest. It was hard and took lots of time.
Later, a technology, LiDAR, makes it possible for scientists to discover hidden ancient villages more easily. To use LiDAR, scientists fly a tiny flying machine over an area. The machine sends out thousands of laser beams (激光束). By recording how long it takes for the beams to return to the machine, scientists can make a 3D map of the ground below. This way, scientists can further study the remains long before they finally enter them.
However, Luke’s team was not able to use LiDAR because it was too expensive. Luckily, Luke found a 2013 LiDAR map online made by other researchers. When Luke and his team studied the information, they were surprised to find thousands of Mayan structures (建筑) which made a large city. The city even had a field for ancient Mayan ball games.
Luke believes that their discovery means there is a lot more to discover in that area. They plan to enter the newly discovered city to continue their research. “Maya cities are completely different from modern ones,” Luke said. “Studying them can give us ideas to make our cities better.”

B. By entering the forest in person.
C. With the help of a LiDAR map.
D. By making a 3D map with a machine.
( )4. What does Luke talk about in the last paragraph

D. The difficulties they faced.
( )5. What’s the best title for the passage

The Zeng Houyi Chime Bells were found from the Zeng Houyi Tomb in Suizhou, Hubei Province in 1978. They are historically important treasure of China.
The Zeng Houyi Chime Bells are hung (悬挂) at three levels and are divided into (划分为) eight groups. There are 19 bells in three groups at the top level, 33 bells in three groups at the middle level and 12 bells in two groups at the bottom level. In addition, there is a single and much larger bell used to change pitch (音高). The bells in each row are different from one another in shape and size.
The Zeng Houyi Chime Bells are hung on two sets of wood racks (架子). One rack is 7.48 meters long and 2.65 meters wide. The other rack is 3.35 meters long and 2.73 meters wide. The two racks are perpendicular to each other, and they make an angle of ninety degrees.
The Zeng Houyi Chime Bells weigh a total of 5 tons. The biggest bell is 153.4 cm in height and 203.6 kg in weight while the smallest bell is 20.4 cm in height and 2.4 kg in weight.
Five musicians were needed to play the instrument in the past. These bells are sounded by striking. Because of their shapes, each bell could produce two different pitches—one if struck at the side; the other at the center. The whole set of chime bells is able to produce all the pitches of a modern piano.
There are more than 2,800 Chinese characters about music and the making of the instrument on the bells. Instruments of such a level were quite uncommon in the world at that time.

( )10. What is the writer’s attitude (态度) to the Zeng Houyi Chime Bells
He is proud of them.

These clay warriors were made to protect Emperor Qin Shi Huang after he died. From them, we can learn about how ancient Chinese soldiers lived, how they made things, and what clothes they wore. The bronze weapons they hold also show that ancient people had smart skills to make tools.
