Adrian’s “Amazing Race” started early, when his parents realized that he, as a baby, couldn’
t hear a thing, not even loud noises. In a special school for the hearing-impaired (听觉受损的),
he learned sign language and got to mix with other disabled children. However, the sight of all
the disabled children communicating with one another upset his mother. She wanted him to lead
a normal life. So after speaking to an advisor, she sent him to private classes where he learned to
read lips and pronounce words.

the outdoors and went to Nepal to climb mountains. He even entered the World Yacht Race in

Teenage life is not just about studying textbooks. Many students today spend all their free
time on homework, but after-school activities play an important role in their growth. A small
survey of 500 high school students from three local schools shows that 65% of those who join
after-school clubs feel less stressed than those who only study. One student in the survey said,
“Club meetings help me forget about exam stress for a while—I feel more relaxed afterward.”
Why do some teens avoid after-school activities One main reason is fear of falling behind
in lessons. They think extra time should go to homework or exam practice. Some teens also
worry about not being good enough—for example, they might hesitate to join a sports team
because they think they’re not fast enough. Another reason is not knowing how to choose—
there are so many options like sports teams, art groups or reading clubs.
In fact, after-school activities bring great benefits. Sports like basketball or running help
teens stay healthy and learn teamwork. Last term, a group of students in the art club organized a
small exhibition at school. Their paintings about daily life got lots of praise, and many said they
felt proud for the first time. Art clubs, such as painting or music, let them show creativity. Even
reading clubs can improve vocabulary and make teens more confident when talking to others.
These skills are just as useful as good grades for future life.
How can teens make the most of after-school activities First, pick one or two that they
really like—don’t join too many. Second, plan time well: finish homework first, then spend 1-2
hours on the activity. Teachers and parents can also help by supporting their choices, not just
pushing for better exam scores.
Teenage years are a time to grow in many ways. With the right balance of study and
after-school activities, teens can become happier and more capable, getting ready for the
challenges ahead.
28. What can we know about the small survey mentioned in the passage
A. It was carried out among 500 students from three national schools.
B. It focused on the relationship between hobbies and exam scores.
C. It lasted for one term to track students’ after-school activities.
D. It showed most club members have less exam stress than non-members.
29. What does the underlined word “hesitate” probably mean in Paragraph 2
A. Refuse politely. B. Feel unsure and slow to act.
C. Decide quickly. D. Argue strongly.
30. What can we infer about parents from the passage
A. They often help teens choose suitable after-school activities.
高一年级英语试题 第 6页 共 11页
B. They usually push teens to join more art or sports clubs.
C. They may pay too much attention to teens’ exam scores.
D. They prefer teens to finish homework after club activities.

A. The importance of balancing study and after-school activities.
B. The reasons why teens should avoid too many after-school clubs.
C. The ways to organize colorful after-school activities in schools.
D. The relationship between club participation and study performance.

There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think. On an
individual level, we grow up eating the food of our culture. It becomes a part of who we
are. Many associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties
us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us. Food from our families often
becomes the comfort food we seek as adults in times of frustration and stress.
On a large scale, traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an
expression of cultural identity. Immigrants bring it wherever they go, and it is a symbol of pride
in their culture and means of coping with homesickness.
Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the
food does not remain exactly the same. Some materials needed to make traditional dishes may
not be readily available, so the taste and flavour can be different from what they would prepare
in their home countries. Additionally, immigrants do not only sell dishes to people from the
same countries as them, but to people from different countries. Therefore, they have to make
small changes in the original dishes to cater to a wider range of customers. Those changes can
create new flavours that still keep the cultural significance of the dishes.
We should not only embrace our heritage (传统) through our culture's food, but also
become more informed about other cultures by trying their food. It is important to remember
that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who
prepare it. Food is a window on culture, and it should be treated as such.
32.What is the function of food mentioned in the passage
A. To help motivate homesickness. B. To show cultural identity.
C. To reflect a country’s history. D. To show a community’s superiority.
33.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. The specific traditional food. B. The national culture.
高一年级英语试题 第 7页 共 11页

B. To present their own food culture in a new way.
C. To make the dishes popular among customers.
D. To announce the beginning of their life on foreign soil.
35.What is the author’s attitude towards different food cultures
A. Negative. B.Balanced. C.Unfair. D.Unchangeable.

阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The Thompson house was always noisy before school. Every morning, twelve-year-old
Mia did her hair at the kitchen table, her fingers moving quickly as she tried to ignore the
regular “clang-clang-clang” beside her. Her little brother Leo, his cheeks still soft with sleep,
was hitting his spoon on his bowl like a bell.
“Stop it” Mia said, throwing potato chips at him. As she did, the necklace (项链) around
her neck moved a little. The necklace, made of shells (贝壳), was her most loved thing — a
gift from Grandma before she passed away. Mia valued this necklace greatly. She remembered
how Grandma had handpicked each shell during their last trip to the beach. “This round shell
means patience,” Grandma had whispered stories while placing it around Mia’s neck. Right now,
Mia needed all the patience she could get.
高一年级英语试题 第 11页 共 11页
As the days went by, Mia found herself struggling less to keep her patience. Leo’s noisy
habits, though still troublesome, didn’t seem as annoying as before. There were moments when
she’d catch him making funny faces or dancing around to music only she could hear. She would
roll her eyes, but deep down, a part of her smiled. One afternoon, while sitting together on the
sofa, Leo shyly asked about the necklace. “Why do you love it so much ” he whispered. Mia
then told him the story of Grandma and the special meaning of each shell. For a moment, Leo
looked thoughtful, and Mia hoped he understood how much the necklace meant to her. She
wished he would be more careful — but little did she know, that wish was about to be tested.
After a two-day summer camp, Mia came home and found Leo lying on her bedroom floor,
her box turned over. “What are you doing ” she shouted. Leo jumped. “I — I just wanted to
see…” The necklace fell from his hand, and the string(线绳) broke. The shells dropped to the
floor like small white teeth, some of them broken into several parts.
