(2026·秦皇岛模拟)
Soon after I took my steps into a research lab as a first-year college student, things went wrong.I left all the enzymes(酶) at room temperature overnight, instead of putting them in the freezer. This could have stopped me from performing experiments on my own, but my mentor(导师) Sauria, who was a postdoc, didn’t show anger or disappointment after I ruined all the newly ordered substances.
I went on to work with Sauria for more years and he set me up for success in science. From the start, Sauria showed a level of trust in my experimental skills that I did not always think I deserved.Even when I used 10,000 times more of an expensive reagent(试剂) than I should have, Sauria didn’t roll his eyes.Instead, he guided me through how the reagent works, making it a teachable moment. He also told me stories of his own mistakes, helping me gain lessons from the situation and do better.
After a few months in the lab, Sauria and I started a project together that required us to write a computer program. That was something I had experience in, and it felt great to teach him.Over the years, he’s always been open to a two-way exchange of information, which has led us to develop many successful projects. We even published a paper together—just the two of us.With these results, my confidence increased gradually during the process.
Looking back, I’m thankful to meet the mentor who drilled into me a desire to learn and gave me freedom to contribute my own ideas.I hope all mentors have their own inner excitement about new knowledge and skills and pass it on to others, because undergraduate researchers aren’t just an extra pair of hands in the lab—we’re also future scientists who need direction and encouragement.

(2025·哈尔滨模拟)
A 9-year-old girl is seated quietly on the sofa in my office.I ask whether she’s ever thought about what she’d like to do upon reaching adulthood.Without hesitation, she shouts, “I want to run a start-up.” She doesn’t even know what a start-up is, but she does know her growth path—in exact detail, going to Stanford University and serving time as a trainee in a big company—to becoming wildly successful in running one.My young patient’s parents are likely to encourage this way of thinking, but they are only making her future chances of being successful less likely. In this country, part of the culture is centered on a narrow concept of what success looks like.Money is overvalued while character is undervalued.
Too many of us are worried about how our kids will compete globally. We passionately believe that staying “on track” beats wandering around. However, reality suggests otherwise. And holding this concept of success as a straight line can set kids up for unrealistic expectations and disappointment.Parents are misguided to assume that what worked for them will be right for their kids, too.Encouraging children to proceed along a straight path makes them cautious and competitive, but what they are most likely to need are curiosity, a willingness to take risks, and a talent for collaboration.
The meaning of success is open to multiple interpretations.Financial independence is one way to measure success, and raising a healthy family and contributing to one’s community is another, to name just a couple. One of the patterns that I see regularly among successful people is real passion about the work they do:the kind of passion that makes them work harder than others, welcome mistakes as learning opportunities, and feel that what they do has impact. While money may be inherited, real success always has to be earned.
Evidence shows our kids would one day benefit from all of the aggressive preparation, coaching, and tutoring.A winding and unexpected path is what leads to success.
5.What can we learn about some parents from Paragraph 2
A.They mislead their children into following in their footsteps.
B.They are not sure how to prepare their children for the future.
C.They overestimate the fierce competition in the near future.
D.They try to impact their children’s understanding of success.
6.Which of the following characteristics is best for children according to the author
A.Adventurousness. B.Calmness.
C.Competitiveness. D.Cautiousness.
【解析】选A。 故选A。
7.How does the author develop Paragraph 3
A.By clarifying the facts.
B.By citing some examples.
C.By applying a new theory.
D.By quoting accurate data.
8.What message does the author seem to convey in the text
A.High expectations may result in disappointment.
B.All the children are bound to succeed ultimately.
C.Children needn’t follow a straight path to success.
D.A good character could boost personal development.

You can help yourself make wiser choices by visualizing your future self.Below are three ideas to connect with your future self and enhance present decision-making.
9 . Researchers have shown that visualizing future events can assist individuals in delaying immediate satisfaction.Interestingly, one doesn’t need to consider the future rewards of such delay; just thinking about the future seems to work. For example, if you’re trying to decide whether to start a project now or postpone it, picture yourself in routine future settings like grocery shopping or an upcoming meeting. 10 .The more real and vivid the future feels, the more likely you are to make a decision that your future self won’t regret.
Send a message to your future self.A website offers a unique service that allows individuals to send emails to their future selves, prompting them to picture what their future selves will be doing and how they will feel about the choices made now. 11 . What are your hopes for your future self What would your future self thank you for if you committed yourself to certain goals today Psychologist Hal says that even briefly reflecting on what you’d write in such a letter can make you feel more connected to your future self.
Imagine your future self. 12 . In one experiment, couch potatoes were asked to imagine either a hoped-for future self who engages in regular exercise and enjoys good health or a feared future self who remains inactive and suffers from health problems.Astonishingly, both visualizations motivated them to get off the couch and exercise more frequently over the next two months compared to a control group that did not imagine a future self.To boost your willpower, imagine two possible future selves: one changing and benefiting and the other unchanging and suffering. 13 .This can inspire positive changes and help you learn from past experiences.
A.Create a future memory
B.Visualize a future success
C.Avoid thinking about the future as it may lead to anxiety
D.Studies show that imagining your future self can increase your present self’s willpower
E.Moreover, let yourself vividly daydream about how you feel about your past self’s choices
F.Use this opportunity to tell your future self about your current plans to reach long-term goals
G.This practice sparks your brain to think more concretely about your current choices’ consequences

A rare find in space has drawn the attention of scientists across the globe. The newly identified asteroid(小行星)is nearly the size of a football field and was first spotted on December 27,2024, by the El Sauce Observatory in Chile, which was named “2024 YR4”.
Based on its brightness, astronomers estimate that the asteroid is between 40 m—90 m wide.Nearly the size of a football field, the asteroid’s movements will be closely watched by astronomers and other experts including NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who have calculated the current risk of the asteroid connecting with Earth as around one and a half per cent (1.6 per cent).“At this point, it’s ‘Let’s pay a lot of attention and observe it as much as we can.’” The Planetary Society chief scientist Dr Bruce Betts said.
As 2024 YR4 continues its oval-shaped(椭圆形的), four-year orbit, it will swing through the inner planets before shooting past Mars and out toward Jupiter. For now, it’s getting away from Earth quickly—its next close pass won’t come until 2028.“The probability is very good that not only will this not hit Earth, but at some point in the next months to a few years, that probability will go to zero,” said Dr Betts.
The best known asteroid impact occurred 66 million years ago, when a nearly 10 km-wide space rock caused a global winter, wiping out the dinosaurs and 75 per cent of all species.By contrast, 2024 YR4 is closer to an asteroid that struck Earth more than a century ago.
The 1908 Tunguska Event, when an asteroid or comet fragment(彗星碎片)measuring 30 m—50 m exploded over Siberia, flattened about 80 million trees across 2,000 sq km.That fragment blew up in the sky rather than leaving a large hole in the ground, and 2024 YR4 would be expected to do the same.“We can calculate the energy...using the mass and the speed,” Dr Betts said.

In my senior-year literature class last term, I encountered a knight who defended a forgotten kingdom, a gentle grandmother who healed wounds with folk tales, and a futuristic explorer who vanished in a black hole.Once, I often found myself amazed at how my students, who brought these figures to life, grasped the essence of complex literary themes.
But the situation was quite different with their first assignment, which centered on the question:“Why is literature important ”
Most of the essays were barely a page long, and scarcely any had a sentence that could serve as a strong thesis statement.I was taken aback. Then it dawned on me that the problem lay in the question itself. They could have written volumes about the allure of social media, but literature, in its pure form, just didn’t seem significant to them. This had to change.
As a new semester began, I asked everyone to craft a reflective essay on a literary work that had touched their soul. This time, they found the task far more engaging. For the subsequent two tasks, a drama-analysis project was followed by a poetry-creation workshop.I only stipulated that each piece should convey a deep-seated emotion. The outcomes were astounding. The students delved into a wide range of literary works and produced essays and poems, each 8 to 15 pages long, with insights that broadened my perspective and stirred my emotions.
I entered the class believing that literature is important as a mirror of humanity. However, my students demonstrated something even more profound. When the final bell rang in June, I walked away with a year’s worth of memories filled with the realization of literature’s most profound significance—the ability to awaken dormant feelings, to transport us to unseen worlds, and to reveal the shared threads of our human experiences.

20.【解析】without。考查介词。句意:对许多中国人来说,没有米饭的一顿饭是不完整的。空前为形容词,空后为名词,且无提示词,由此可知,此处为介词,结合句意,此处表示“没有米饭”,所以用介词without,意为“没有”。故填without。

A.They mislead their children into following in their footsteps.

A.By clarifying the facts.
B.By citing some examples.

At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me plainly,“Now I will teach you how to write your name. And to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch.I was curious.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name.My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked the elders to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck.As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name:Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old” “barley(薏米)” and “warm”.
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I put on an American accent and abandoned my Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy.“Why not get back in touch with my heritage ” I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to copy the old masters’ techniques, thereby refining your own.Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably on-the-nose assessments of my person.“You need to be braver,” he once observed.“Have confidence.Try to produce a bold stroke(笔画).” For years, I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed me.
I was trying to make sense of this practice. You must visualize the word as it is to be written and leave a trace of yourself in it.As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own cultural restrictions.Could it help me go beyond mine My teacher once said to me, “When you look at the word, you see the body.Though a word on the page is two-dimensional, it contains multitudes, conveying the force you’ve applied, the energy of your grip, the arch of your spine.” I had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully.
During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me,“This word is much better.I can see the choices you made, your calculations, your flow.Trust yourself. This word is yours.” He might as well have said, “This word is you.”

Given the stressful nature of work in cities and the fast-paced urban life, after-work hours have become an important time for people to relieve some of the stress and meet their social and recreational needs. As summer temperatures rise, so does the night-time economy.Data show that the time after working hours is the “golden time” for consumption in urban areas. For example, the sales of large shopping malls from 6 pm to 10 pm account for more than half of the day’s total sales.
Major cities in China and abroad have introduced many measures to promote the night-time economy. For instance, Beijing and Shanghai have issued several policies, and cities such as Hangzhou and Nanjing have introduced various activities to boost night-time consumption.
Now that the consumer market is firmly on the recovery path in China, the night-time economy can meet people’s social and recreational needs and increase domestic demand. As the situation normalizes in China, the night-time economy can help increase market supply, promote the integrated development of business, travel, culture, sports and other service industries. The night-time economy fits well with the post-industrial urbanization trend and enhances a city’s charm while facilitating the flow of goods, capital and information.
To ensure the sustainable development of the night-time economy, the government and enterprises have to make joint efforts to optimize the consumption environment and use innovative means to increase consumption.First, to meet the diversified consumption needs, services such as catering(饮食服务) and shopping should go along with night life.Second, night-time economy brands should be developed by learning from the experience of cities around the world.Third, the authority could consider extending the opening hours of museums, libraries and concert halls to draw more visitors for the development of the night-time economy. And fourth, it is important that consumers exhibit civilized behavior, and the authority promotes a simple, moderate, green and low-carbon lifestyle in order to ensure the sustainable development of the night-time economy.

It’s been quite a while since the world saw exactly how deadly these deep-sea voyages can be.On June 18,2023, the private submersible(潜水船) Titan carried five men on a mission to view the remains of the Titanic, which is about 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland. The dive was expected to take a few hours and reach a depth of more than 12,000 feet. But 105 minutes after the Titan went down below the waves, it lost contact.
The U.S.and Canadian Coast Guards and the U.S.Navy were called in for a desperate search to rescue the passengers, only to discover the Titan had collapsed inward with no survivors. The disaster dominated global news for weeks, touching off debates:Are human-led deep-sea missions worth their risks and costs
On social media, some expressed sympathy, while others opposed the effort.Critics labeled the passengers “risk-takers” or “senseless”, and journalists strongly criticised the media focus on wealthy explorers instead of the drowned victims in the Aegean Sea.The obloquy continues today—I’ve been targeted myself.
For a decade, I’ve supported undersea exploration, arguing its importance.Critics object that remotely operated machines make human missions unnecessary. Why dive deep when we can study hidden secrets in high-definition from safe offices
Yet I defend humanity’s drive to explore—the hands-on, unpredictable pursuit that sent us to the moon and across oceans.Without such exploration, scientists can’t confirm theories;nor can journalists share real stories.Through many attempts and mistakes, I’ve learned:To truly describe a subject, you must encounter it.Discovery requires being present.
The path to knowledge is challenging, filled with setbacks and failures. It’s costly and often unrewarding, but that’s exactly why it matters.Trying various approaches—even following uncertain clues—is crucial to discovery. We lose something vital if we abandon the courage to go deep.

The Nazca Lines(纳斯卡线条) are a famous group of huge ancient drawings in the desert in southern Peru. The Nazca people made the drawings by removing the reddish top layer of rocks in the desert. This revealed the lighter dirt underneath.
The drawings are called “geoglyphs(地画)”.They were usually drawn with a single long, winding line. Many of the lines are extremely long, and can only be fully seen from the air.The largest geoglyph line is around 366 meters long. But most of the newly-found geoglyphs are smaller than the ones already discovered, and are roughly 9 meters in length. Many of the new geoglyphs seem to show humans, as well as animals.
To find the new geoglyphs, the scientists trained a special AI program to analyze satellite images for likely geoglyphs. The AI program made a lot of mistakes—for every 36 possible geoglyphs the program found, the researchers discovered roughly one actual geoglyph.Even so, the new method turned up geoglyphs much faster than the scientists could have managed without drones(无人机) and AI.“What used to take three or four years, can now be done in two or three days,” said Johny Isla, who’s in charge of studying the Nazca Lines for the country of Peru.
The researchers are still trying to figure out what the geoglyphs mean.Masato Sakai, who led the research, says the new discoveries are helping scientists learn more. For one thing, the scientists discovered a system of paths in the Nazca Desert. These paths aren’t far from groups of the smaller geoglyphs. The researchers believe the paths were made by the Nazca people walking through the desert, and that the smaller geoglyphs were meant to be seen by these travelers.
The scientists think the way these smaller geoglyphs are grouped together may be the key to understanding them. The larger geoglyphs, which can only be fully seen and understood from the air, are different, and may have been used for ceremonies or other special events.

On July 4, 1972, a pair of young newlyweds named Tony and Maureen were on the driveway of a family home in the south of England. 9 Or somewhere. They had a trunk full of food, cooking equipment and some sleeping bags. They believed that their journey across Asia would be nothing more than a little adventure before they settled down to a steady, middle-class life in England.
And it turned out to be just the kind of adventure the couple longed for. They got caught in a snowstorm in the Italian Alps, bumped into a motorcycle in Iran and then sold their car. From there, it was a bus to Pakistan and then to India. The couple hitchhiked south across Thailand and through Malaysia and Singapore. 10
Tony and Maureen each lost more than ten pounds in the five and a half months from England to Australia. 11 And by the time they made it to Sydney they had precisely twenty-seven cents left to sustain them.
12 The bookshops they could have visited back in England in 1972 would have had precious little to offer in the way of practical advice for their route. But that’s not to say that Tony and Maureen had nothing to guide them.As they would discover soon, their single best source of information was the other travelers they’d encounter on the road. 13 And these notes would later prove to be a very valuable resource for the book Across Asia on the Cheap, the beginning of their Lonely Planet guidebooks—the gospel(真理) of adventure travel for tens of millions of readers.
A.They would also exchange information.
B.They once wanted to stop their journey.
C.They’d covered over ten thousand miles.
D.Tony took very careful notes of the information every day.
E.They set out on the final leg of the trip—Western Australia.

F.What did the young couple have to guide them in all of this
G.They were driving a used minivan and their goal was to get to India.
