Peking Opera Faces: Colors Tell Stories
Do you know that in Peking Opera, the colors on actors' faces are not just for decoration They tell the audience what kind of person the character is. This traditional art form, called "lianpu" (face painting), has a history of over 200 years and is an important part of China's intangible cultural heritage.
Red faces mean the character is brave and loyal. Guan Yu, a famous general from the Three Kingdoms period, always has a red face. He was so loyal that he refused to change sides even when the enemy offered him great wealth.
Black faces show that the character is honest and serious. Bao Zheng, a judge from the Song Dynasty, has a black face with a white crescent moon on his forehead. People say the moon helps him see the truth and judge fairly.
White faces are for bad people. These characters are clever but dishonest. Cao Cao, a powerful ruler, often has a white face in Peking Opera. He was smart but also cruel and untrustworthy.
Blue and green faces show warriors who are brave but also wild and rebellious. Gold and silver faces are for gods and spirits.
Today, young people are finding new ways to connect with this ancient art. Some fashion designers use face painting patterns on modern clothes. There are even mobile apps that let you "try on" different opera faces using AI technology. By understanding these colorful faces, we can better appreciate the wisdom of traditional Chinese culture.

22.A character with a red face is usually honest and serious.

Zhang Yiming: The Man Behind Douyin
If you have ever watched short videos on your phone, chances are you have used a product created by Zhang Yiming. Born in 1983 in Fujian province, Zhang is the founder of ByteDance, the company behind the wildly popular apps Douyin (known as TikTok outside China).
Zhang was not a typical top student. He did well in school but was always curious about things outside the textbooks. In high school, he fell in love with computers and taught himself programming. "I was fascinated by how a few lines of code could create something amazing," he once said.
After graduating from Nankai University, Zhang worked for several tech companies. But he always dreamed of starting his own business. In 2012, he founded ByteDance. His big idea was simple but revolutionary: use artificial intelligence to recommend content that users would like, instead of making them search for it.
This idea led to the creation of Douyin in 2016. The app lets users create and share 15-second videos with music and special effects. It became an instant hit, especially among young people. By 2025, Douyin had over 800 million daily active users worldwide.
But success didn't come without challenges. Some people worried that the app was too addictive. Zhang responded by adding features that remind users to take breaks. "Technology should serve people, not control them," he said.
In 2021, Zhang stepped down as CEO of ByteDance to focus on long-term strategy. He believes that AI will continue to change how we learn, work, and play. "The future is not about machines replacing humans," he says, "but about humans using machines to become better versions of themselves."
31.What does the underlined word "fascinated" in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Bored. B. Confused. C. Very interested. D. Disappointed.

A. It was too expensive to use. B. People worried it was too addictive.

C. He remains thoughtful about technology's role.
D. He regrets creating Douyin.
35.Where would this passage most likely appear
A. A science fiction novel. B. A teenage lifestyle magazine.
C. A business or technology website. D. A government report.

How Does Your Brain Learn
Have you ever wondered why you forget some things quickly but remember others for years Scientists have been studying how the brain learns, and they've made some surprising discoveries.
When you learn something new, your brain creates connections between neurons (nerve cells). The first time you hear a new word, for example, a weak connection forms. If you hear that word again, the connection gets stronger. Think of it like making a path through a forest. The first time you walk through, it's hard. But if you walk the same way many times, a clear path appears.
This is why repetition is so important for learning. But here's the interesting part: not all repetition is equal. A 2024 study from Beijing Normal University found that spacing out your practice works much better than cramming (突击学习). Students who studied vocabulary for 20 minutes every day for a week remembered 80% more words than those who studied for two hours straight the night before a test.
Another key finding is about sleep. While you sleep, your brain doesn't just rest—it works hard. It reviews the day's experiences and decides what to keep and what to throw away. The most important memories get moved to long-term storage. That's why pulling an all-nighter before an exam is actually a bad idea. You're not giving your brain time to save what you've learned.
Recently, scientists have been using AI to understand learning better. By creating computer models that simulate how the brain works, they can test different learning strategies. One surprising result: making mistakes actually helps learning—if you get feedback quickly. When you make a mistake and immediately learn the correct answer, your brain pays special attention. It's like the brain says, "Oops, that was wrong—let's remember the right way!"
So what does this mean for students First, study a little every day instead of waiting until the last minute. Second, get enough sleep—it's when learning really happens. And third, don't be afraid of mistakes. Learn from them and move on.
36.What does the author compare making brain connections to
A. Building a house. B. Making a path through a forest.
C. Planting a tree. D. Writing a book.
37.Put the following steps in the correct order according to the passage:
①Brain decides which memories to keep.
②Neuron connections form when learning something new.
③Brain reviews experiences during sleep.
④Connections become stronger with repetition.
A. ②→④→③→① B. ④→②→①→③
C. ③→①→②→④ D. ①→③→④→②
38.The author uses the Beijing Normal University study to show that ______.
A. Chinese students study harder than others
B. vocabulary is the most difficult to learn
C. spaced practice is more effective than cramming
D. 20 minutes is the perfect study time

A. Giving a definition.
B. Telling a story.
C. Quoting an expert.
D. Using a personified example (giving human qualities to the brain).
40.What is the best title for this passage
A. Why Sleep Is Important B. The Science of Learning

Learn to Fail, Fail to Learn
No one likes failing. It feels disappointing when you study hard for a test but still get a low grade, or when you practice for weeks but still lose a game. However, successful people around the world share one secret: they know how to fail well. 41
First, see failure as a teacher, not a enemy. When things go wrong, ask yourself: What can I learn from this Thomas Edison failed thousands of times before inventing the light bulb. 42 Each failure taught him what didn't work, bringing him closer to what did work.
Second, separate your actions from your identity. Failing a test doesn't make you a failure. 43 If you tell yourself "I'm just not good at math," you'll stop trying. But if you think "I haven't mastered this yet," you'll keep working and eventually improve.
Third, share your failures with others. In many cultures, people only talk about successes. 44 When you open up about your struggles, you'll find support and advice. You might even inspire someone else who is facing similar challenges.
Finally, develop a growth mindset. This idea, created by psychologist Carol Dweck, means believing that your abilities can grow with effort. 45 They welcome challenges because they know that every failure is a step forward.
Remember: The only real failure is the failure to learn. So next time you fall short, don't hide or give up. Learn from it, adjust, and try again.
A. He didn't see those as failures, but as discoveries.
B. People with a growth mindset are not afraid to fail.
C. Here are four ways to turn failure into your best teacher.
D. It just means you haven't found the right strategy yet.
E. Failure is something we should avoid at all costs.
F. But hiding our failures only makes us feel alone.
G.Success comes easily to those who never fail.

A Turning Point
Last year, I failed my math exam. I felt terrible and wanted to give up. Every time I saw math problems, my head hurt. I thought I would never get better.
Then one day, my classmate Li Ming offered to help. He didn't laugh at me. Instead, he explained each problem patiently. He showed me easy ways to understand difficult questions. Slowly, math became less scary.
With his help, I started to make progress. In the next exam, I got a passing grade. I was so happy!
This experience taught me an important lesson: never give up, and don't be afraid to ask for help. A little kindness from others can change everything. Now I always try to help my classmates too.
