Dr.Marie-Luce Chevalier, a Belgian/French geologist(地质学家), has been working as a search professor at the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences in Beijing since 2010.
For the past few years, she has been studying active faults(断层) in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and how they move.In 2021,Chevalier was presented with the Chinese Government Friendship Award in appreciation of her contributions to the development of China’s disaster assessment system of earthquakes and the promotion of cooperation and exchanges between China and other countries.
Chevalier’s choice of China as a research destination was not made by chance. Her research has primarily focused on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. She had also collaborated(合作)with Chinese scientists from the beginning of her master’s program.“When they asked if I wanted to join their team after my post-doctorate, I gladly accepted and have no regrets. My years in China have provided me with a constant source of fresh personal and professional experiences,” she said, adding that her mother’s interest in Chinese culture contributed to her decision to work in the country.Chevalier will continue to research active faults in and around Xizang actively and contribute to our understanding of how past climate developed to work towards predicting future climate change, another topic near and dear to her heart. She will accomplish this by conducting field research, sharing her findings with scientific community, teaching students who will become tomorrow’s scientists, and raising awareness among local populations about the risks they may face in their lifetime.
Chevalier’s mother went to Xizang once, realising her lifelong dreams.Chevalier keeps raising her daughter in this safe and highly international environment, Beijing. When people ask her daughter where she is from at four years old, she proudly answers, “China!” Chevalier wants to learn more about the Chinese language and culture, continues to enjoy the happiness of the Chinese people, and looks forward to seeing what China achieves next!

Spanish Weddings
Weddings in Spain hold great significance and are truly special occasions. It’s very common to see that not only the whole family but also the whole village comes together to celebrate. 8 While there are some customs that might seem familiar to us, like the practice of throwing rice, there are many others that are quite unique and less well-known.
9 In traditional Spanish weddings, the groom would present the bride with 13 coins. This was a symbol of his willingness to support her financially. However, as time has passed, things have changed.Nowadays, brides and grooms exchange these coins, showing their intention to share their wealth equally in the future.
Traditionally, Spanish weddings were quite different from many others. They didn’t have bridesmaids or groomsmen. When the wedding ceremony took place, at the altar, it was just the bride and the groom. 10 At the wedding reception, the main table was arranged for six people: the bride, the groom, and their parents. It was a special space for the most important family members. 11 Bridesmaids have gradually become a part of Spanish weddings.
During the lively wedding reception, the bride and the groom go around to each table, carrying a basket filled with small tokens of appreciation. The male guests are usually offered a cigar or a small bottle of wine, while the female guests receive a delicate little gift. This is also the time when guests often give their wedding gifts in the form that is most preferred—money in envelopes. 12
A.Coins are closely related to most Spanish weddings.
B.Thus, you’ll notice that traditional weddings are crowded with people.
C.Invitations are usually sent out one or two weeks before the wedding ceremony.
D.And this situation allowed them to enjoy the happy moment more privately.
E.Some couples also send out the number of a bank account along with the invitation.
F.Those who occupy the main table will be regarded as rude guests in the wedding ceremony.
G.However, due to Hollywood’s influence, weddings have experienced some changes nowadays.

Total solar eclipses(日食) have scared people since time out of mind. The first record of one, preserved on a clay tablet found in Ugarit, once a trade city but destroyed later in Syria, is believed from its age and location to describe either an eclipse that happened in 1375 BC or one in 1223 BC. Legendary explanations for eclipses include the Sun being eaten by dogs, frogs or dragons. The reality is not romantic. Why are total ones, like the one coming on April 8, so rare
Solar eclipses are a special case of phenomena called transits and occultations, in which an intervening(介于中间的) heavenly body stops light from a star reaching an observer. If the blocking body appears smaller in the sky than the star, the result is called a transit and looks like a dark spot crossing the star’s surface. If the blocking object appears larger than the star, the star disappears completely—an occultation.A total eclipse is an occultation.
Solar eclipses may be either of these things, since the apparent sizes in the sky of the Sun and the Moon, viewed from Earth, are almost identical. If the Moon orbited Earth in the same plane as Earth orbits the Sun, eclipses would happen every month, but would be total only in the tropics(热带地区).In reality, the average interval between total eclipses is 18 months, and they may be seen from time to time all over the world. The path of totality across Earth’s surface is narrow and the period short(a maximum of just over seven and a half minutes).Outside these boundaries, the Sun will appear partially eclipsed, looking like a pie that something has taken a bite from.
The Great North American Eclipse, as it has been called, will be a sight to be held on April 8.But it should also be cherished, because total eclipses of the Sun will not happen for ever.Tidal friction(潮汐摩擦) causes the Moon to move away from Earth at 3.8 cm a year, making it appear smaller and smaller in the sky.In 600 million years or so the last, short totality will occur.

If you ever wondered what your child’s drawings might reveal, keep on reading.
Imagine how you would feel when looking at Earth from outer space. That feeling of awe is what we call the Overview Effect, a feeling most astronauts report when they return to Earth, described as a transformative experience that changes their view of our planet and humanity—an experience that builds a sense of unity, interconnectedness, and responsibility for Earth’s well-being.Recently, 40,000 children experienced a virtual reality(VR) space journey, making them a unique group to have the chance to experience this awesome feeling without leaving Earth.
To find out whether they had experienced the Overview Effect, we asked 100 children from this special group to draw self-images before and after the VR journey. In previous studies on adults, we found that after viewing a video to bring about the Overview Effect, participants tended to draw a smaller self.Apparently, going through the experience of awe and wonder makes one feel smaller, with a smaller drawing as the result. However, when we applied this method to children, we encountered unexpected results. The size of their drawings remained unchanged after the VR experience. This discrepancy led us to question:Were drawings by children simply not a good way to measure the Overview Effect Did what worked for adults simply not work for children
Upon closer analysis, we discovered that the key to measuring transformative experiences in children lies not in the size of their drawings but in the richness of their content. Before the VR journey, the children’s drawings were simple, often showing familiar elements from their daily lives. After the journey, their drawings became far more insightful, filled with vivid descriptions indicative of what they had learned during the VR journey—for example, the Earth’s ecology. This discovery gave us a new way to understand children’s responses to transformative experiences.
I’m not proposing that we replace tests in schools with children’s drawings. But when it comes to transformative experiences, I’d recommend paying more attention to what children actually draw.

Things To Remember On Your First Solo Travel Adventure

It’s okay to have bad days. 12 It happens and it’s completely okay to take some time to process whatever it is you’re feeling.Take yourself to a movie or spend the day doing something relaxing like writing in your journal or reading on the beach.
It’s okay to start small. 13 Start by doing a staycation in another part of town, spending a few days in a new locale, a bus or train ride away.Just do whatever you’re comfortable with and see how it all feels for you.
A.You are the boss of your own adventure.
B.You need to make an unusual travel choice.
C.It’s no secret that solo travel is on the rise.
D.Sometimes things can go incredibly wrong.

Caring Lauren Schroeder was inspired to help bring healthy food to needy families in her community.Volunteering at a food shelter when she was 14, and tasked with helping fill boxes for households in need with canned and packaged food, this Iowa teen felt that something was missing from the donated groceries: fresh vegetables. So she shared with her parents her desire to start a garden on their own farm to supply local families in need with fresh produce.
Coming from a farming family, Lauren had some familiarity with agriculture, and had helped raise rabbits and lambs, but had never tried vegetable cultivation at scale, though the Schroeders plant soybeans and corn each year on their 150-acre farm.
The work involved in realizing Lauren’s plan was not a walk in the park.Initially, while proud of her daughter’s vision, her mother, Katie Schroeder, admitted to some foreboding about the work involved: “I was wondering, ‘Oh my gosh, how much work is this going to be ’ I wasn’t sure whether this would work.” This was one young change-maker, however! Lauren researched plants online, checking which species needed more shade, how much water was required, and when to harvest each crop.During Iowa’s hot summers, she had to water her crops by hand for around 2—3 hours daily. She also checked daily for weeds, and bent down to pick her green bean crop. Thanks to her diligence, Lauren planted half an acre of land, with 15 varieties of vegetables in 2022, harvesting her first crops.
In an interview with a local media channel, Lauren says, “I wanted to have something that would impact people.I want to impact community members. Many people help you out, but it makes more difference when you help others out. That’s what makes me happiest.”

In 1984, Carter became a member of Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization focusing on building affordable homes.
Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity had built 342 homes by 1980.After the Carters joined, that number climbed rapidly, reaching 10,000 by 1991.By 2023, the organization had built or repaired more than 45,000 homes. Now, it has branches in all 50 U.S.states and works in more than 70 countries.
Carter’s connection with Habitat for Humanity began with a visit to one of its work sites in New York City, where volunteers were repairing an old building.Struck by the challenging task, he joked that he would have to return to lend his carpentry(木工的) skills.Soon after, Carter organized a group of volunteers and returned to the site.He and his wife, Rosalynn, worked alongside other volunteers during the day and shared dormitories with them at night.

In 2019, at age 95, Carter took part in his final Habitat for Humanity project in Nashville. He had fallen at home the day before and showed up at the work site with a bandage on his forehead.Despite this, he still assembled(组装) and painted wooden pieces for multiple homes. For many Americans, Carter was the face of Habitat for Humanity, as he truly put his money where his mouth was.

Ⅰ.阅读理解(共8小题;每小题2.5分,满分20分)
A
In a gray box, I have a thick pile of love letters.I imagine about sharing them with a granddaughter when I’m 90.But my most treasured love letter is from one of my best friends. It’s a handwritten letter years ago when I was having trouble getting over a man.Her letter is the most romantic in my pile.It made no excuses. It simply let me know that I was loved.
Reflecting on her gift, and the dying art of handwritten letters in our age of emails and emoticons, I chose to conduct an experiment this Christmas: replacing presents with heartfelt, handwritten love letters for my family members.
In our digital era, most of us rarely take the time to share deeply considered thoughts and emotions with the people in our lives.Handwriting captures the writer’s emotions, often preserved longer than digital exchanges. However, technology is taking over.First came typewriters and keyboards. Now a new brain-computer lets people type with their minds. What are we losing when we sacrifice the physical labor behind the written word We tend to value what we struggle for.Have we undervalued the human exchange of ideas
That day, I came across a letter my mom wrote to her parents when she was young. She seemed so comfortable with her parents. It was a relationship I didn’t have with her.I was inspired by my mother’s letter to her parents when I sat down to write my letter to her.I wanted her to know my love, and to close the crack that technology and culture had created between us.With each sentence, I was discovering new and deeper ways of seeing my mother, and making myself known to her in more thoughtful ways as well.
Eight single-space pages later, my hand was aching but I was done.It was only the first of my love letters, but it was already clear: What had begun as a fun project was in fact one of the most important undertakings of my life.

For some of us, going to the dentist for routine check-ups is a thing of the ordinary. But for many people around the world, especially those in impoverished(贫困的) areas, having dental improvement and their teeth checked simply isn’t possible.A Brazilian dentist Felipe Rossi has devoted himself to helping changing that situation.
Growing up in the USA, Felipe Rossi had just obtained the Bachelor of Medicine Degree and was about to start a master’s degree in Pediatric Dentistry(儿童口腔学) when a journey to his father’s home—Balsabo in Brazil—converted his initial plan.“All locals didn’t have access to dental care, and consequently, many of them suffered deformed teeth or even loss of teeth, leading to many people not daring to laugh with their mouths open,” Felipe Rossi recalled.“A desire was planted in my heart. That is, to use my skills to bring healthy smiles to people suffering from dental problems.”
With the support of his parents, Felipe formed an NGO(non-government organization) called Por1Sorriso to give free oral treatments to individuals with low incomes who require cleaning, fillings, crowns, restoration work and more. His team is composed of approximately 30 registered volunteers who go with him to poor towns and villages in Brazil.
Sponsorship is generally provided by two private companies.Individuals may also make donations through the “Smile Solidarity” program, where they can choose monthly amounts to contribute.Porsorriso also holds regular fundraisers to afford the cost of providing free dental services around the country.
As noble as its objective is, Felipe admits that Por1Sorriso is “struggling to survive” because of the huge cost of providing dental work and the constant fundraising events they have to hold to keep the NGO in normal functioning.“Challenging as it is, it did bring healthy teeth as well as renewed confidence to the locals. We will continue this transformative act whatever difficulties we will face,”Felipe said with a strong will.

1.What does the clay tablet of Ugarit represent
A.Some figures of ancient animals.
B.The Sun being eaten by some animals.
C.Ancient people who were hunting for animals.
D.The earliest total solar eclipse recorded.
【解析】选D。推理判断题。根据第一段中“The first record of one, preserved on a clay tablet found in Ugarit, once a trade city but destroyed later in Syria, is believed from its age and location to describe either an eclipse that happened in 1375 BC or one in 1223 BC.(最早的日食记录保存在Ugarit的一块泥板上,Ugarit曾是叙利亚的一个贸易城市,但后来被摧毁。从它的年代和位置来看,人们认为它可以描述发生在公元前1375年或公元前1223年的日食。)”可知,Ugarit的一块泥板描绘了第一个日全食的事实,这是有记录以来最早的日全食。故选D项。
2.How does the author develop Paragraph 2
A.By listing statistics.
B.By giving definitions.
C.By giving examples.
D.By analyzing cause and effect.
可知,第二段主要阐释了transit(凌日)和 occultation(掩星)两种自然现象,对这两种现象给出了定义。故选B项。
3.What can we learn about total solar eclipses from Paragraph 3
A.Their duration is relatively longer.
B.They take place every month actually.
C.They are visible only from a narrow path.
D.They look like a bite taken out of the Sun.

4.What makes total solar eclipses so rare
A.The moving-away Moon.
B.The stronger tide on Earth.
C.The smaller attraction of the Moon for Earth.
D.The changing distance between the Sun and Earth.
【解析】选A。推理判断题。根据第四段中“Tidal friction causes the Moon to move away from Earth at 3.8 cm a year, making it appear smaller and smaller in the sky.(潮汐摩擦使月球以每年3.8厘米的速度远离地球,使它在天空中显得越来越小。)”可知,潮汐摩擦导致月球逐渐远离地球,使其在天空中显得越来越小。由此可知,我们以后再想见到日全食将会越来越难。故选A项。

5.How can we describe the Overview Effect
A.It expresses man’s view of Earth and humanity.
B.It helps people get deeper insights into the world.
C.It brings about awesome feelings of the outer space.
D.It is a transformative experience unique to astronauts.
【解析】选B。细节理解题。根据第二段“That feeling of awe is what we call the Overview Effect, a feeling most astronauts report when they return to Earth, described as a transformative experience that changes their view of our planet and humanity—an experience that builds a sense of unity, interconnectedness, and responsibility for Earth’s well-being.”
6.What does the underlined word “discrepancy” mean in Paragraph 3
A.Problem. B.Progress.
C.Doubt. D.Difference.
【解析】选D。词义猜测题。根据第三段中“In previous studies on adults, we found that after viewing a video to bring about the Overview Effect, participants tended to draw a smaller self.”和“However, when we applied this method to children, we encountered unexpected results. The size of their drawings remained unchanged after the VR experience.”
7.How did the children’s drawings change after the VR journey
A.The self-images became larger.
B.They described more details.
C.There were more familiar elements.
D.They expressed richer emotions.
【解析】选B。细节理解题。根据第四段中“After the journey, their drawings became far more insightful, filled with vivid descriptions indicative of what they had learned during the VR journey”可知,VR之旅结束后,他们的画变得更加富有洞察力,充满了生动的描述,体现出他们在VR旅途中学到的知识,说明在VR旅途后,儿童的画描述了更多的细节。故选B。
8.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To suggest a way of measuring children’s learning.
B.To compare adults’ and children’s Overview Effect.
C.To analyze the role of VR technology in children’s education.
D.To describe the psychological experience of space travel.
【解析】选A。推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“This discovery gave us a new way to understand children’s responses to transformative experiences.” 故选A。
