One of the biggest decisions that parents in the United States make is about where to send their children for school from kindergarten through Grade 12. Singleton, an associate professor of economics at the University of Rochester, studies the topic of school choice. With a new school year already underway or on the horizon for many, he shares insights everyone should know about school choice, whether or not you’re currently the parent or guardian of school-age children. “Taxpayers are now financing education at charter schools and, to some extent, private schools,” Singleton says. “So, there are very real concerns about the impact on resources at traditional public schools, and what that means for public education and society more broadly.” School choice refers to a set of policies that create options for families and students that are not directly linked to their neighborhood of residence. The concept of school choice has changed dramatically in the last three decades. Until the mid-1990s, it typically involved moving to a different neighborhood or sending a child to a private school at the parent’s or guardian’s expense. Then, in 1991, Minnesota passed the country’s first charter school law. In the three-plus decades since then, charter schools and other school choice options have proliferated. Today, school choice means that parents can opt to send their K-12 children to: Public schools, Magnet schools, Charter schools, or Private schools. Parents can also opt to homeschool their children, but Singleton limits his work to school choice policies adopted by school boards and governments. An important point to keep in mind, Singleton notes, is that in the United States, “fewer than 10% of all students are attending charter schools, and maybe another 10% attend private schools. So, by and large, most students are staying in the public school system.” 1.Who are the target audience of this text (C) A.All the parents and guardians. Jo Boaler, professor of mathematics education at Stanford, has studied how students learn math, to identify why so many students end up hating or fearing math, and, too often, underachieve. In her new book, Mathematical Mindsets, Boaler describes how society has traditionally valued one type of math learner—one who can memorize well and calculate fast—as opposed to others who have the same potential but may be deeper, slower. The “testing culture” in American schools is a major problem for math learners, Boaler said, noting that exams and tests are far more pervasive in math than other subjects. The combination of frequent testing, procedural teaching and uninteresting questions disconnected from students’ lives causes many students to regard math as a“cold, lifeless subject” without a human connection. The good news is that any student’s negative perception of math can dramatically change,Boaler said. She works with Stanford psychology Professor Carol Dweck to deliver growth mindset interventions to teachers and students.A“growth mindset” is built around the idea that most basic abilities can be developed and expanded upon through dedication and hard work.By contrast, with a“fixed mindset”, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits(特征). “When we open up mathematics and teach broad, visual, creative math, then we teach math as a learning subject instead of as a performance subject,” Boaler said. “The outcome is that the subject becomes deeper and filled with more connections, so students enjoy it more and achieve at higher levels.” Critics such as Marina Ratner, professor of mathematics at the University of California, express skepticism towards moving away from traditional methods.Math is math;there is no shortcut. They argue that without solid basic skills, students might struggle with subjects like algebra(代数), let alone tackling any other higher-level STEM courses.【语篇属性】语篇 类型 议论文 主题 语境 人与社会语篇 内容 文章阐述了斯坦福大学数学教育学教授 Jo Boaler 对许多学生厌恶或惧怕数学这一问题的研究,最后提及 Marina Ratner 等批评者对摒弃传统教学方法的质疑语篇 结构 Para.1 Many students hate math due to mindset issues.Para.2 Boaler finds that traditional math learning values fast memorization.Para.3 Testing culture makes math seem uninteresting.Para.4 Growth mindset interventions can change students’ views.Para.5 Broad, creative math teaching deepens the subject, boosts enjoyment and achievement.Para.6 Critics argue traditional methods are essential for basics.1.What problem is presented in the text A.Students fear math due to abstract concepts.B.There is a lack of standardized tests in math.C.Math learners focus on advanced concepts too early.D.Traditional math teaching discourages many students.√【解题过程】第一步:抓关键 定信息区间抓关键 题干中的关键信息:problem;presented定信息 在原文中定位关键词,确定答题关键句为第三段中的“The combination of frequent testing, procedural teaching and uninteresting questions disconnected from students’ lives causes many students to regard math as a ‘cold, lifeless subject’ without a human connection.” A Students fear math due to abstract concepts. B There is a lack of standardized tests in math. C Math learners focus on advanced concepts too early. 无中生有D Traditional math teaching discourages many students. 2.What does the underlined word “pervasive” most likely mean in the third paragraph A.Occasional. Southern Middle School students and their science teacher, Jenna Borman, are working on a prototype(原型) desk that they hope to attach to the wheelchair of their classmate, Kenneth, who has a special disease and uses a laptop as his primary means of communication. “At present, the laptop is in a pretty heavy case and has a strap(带子) that goes around his neck and a handle on the back of it for him to hold. When he’s seated, it kind of just lays in his lap. It’s not very easy for him to use,” Borman said.“Kenneth always has to hold his laptop, and so this project is going to help him just set it there so his hands are free,” said Julia Baker to the social media, a student of this school. What started off as an engineering after-school program has turned into an award-winning idea. The students recently won a statewide Science Technology Engineering Math(STEM) competition called “Solve for Tomorrow”, which came with $12,000 worth of technology for the school. “We thought it was just an idea for Kenny, and then we won.So, it was like, wow,”said Avery Willet excitedly. “This whole project is really teaching us about how to work together and how we can help other people and not just us, ” added Everleigh Finnelle. “I learned how to work with others and a lot about teamwork so that we could make this project the best it could be,” said Haley Brown. “There is still room for improvement. Our team is working on the prototype, making adjustments so it works perfectly for Kenny. We’re really most looking forward to seeing him using it and all of our work into it,” Finnelle said.
