　　Whether AI is, or even can be,aware has been debated for decades and only heated up in recent years with the appearance of large language models that can hold convincing conversations and generate text on a variety of topics.
　　Earlier this year, Microsoft tested OpenAI’s GPT-4 and claimed the model was already displaying “sparks” of general intelligence.Blake Lemoine, a former Google engineer, infamously went a step further, claiming that the firm’s LaMDA artificial intelligence had actually become sentient—having hired a lawyer to protect the AI’s rights.
　　Now Robert Long at the Center for AI Safety, a San Francisco-based nonprofit organisation, and his colleagues have looked at several theories of human consciousness and generated a list of 14 “indicator properties” that a conscious
　　AI model would be likely to display.
　　Using that list, the researchers examined current AI models, including DeepMind’s Adaptive Agent and PaLM-E, for signs of those properties, but found no significant evidence that any current model was conscious.They say that AI models that display more of the indicator properties are more likely to be conscious, and that some models already possess individual properties—but that there are no significant signs of consciousness.
　　Long says that the list of 14 indicators could change, grow or shrink as research evolves.
　　“We hope the effort to examine AI consciousness will continue,” says Long.“AI consciousness is not something that any one discipline can tackle alone.It requires expertise from the sciences of the mind, AI and philosophy.”
　　Long believes that like studying animal consciousness, investigating AI consciousness must start with what we know about humans but not limit to it.

Land an Airplane Without Landing Gear
　At 17 years old, most people are still struggling to park their cars. Yes, it takes a bit of practice. And once the car is parked, the day is packed with school activities and homework and just hanging out with friends. But at 17, Maggie Taraska had a different goal in mind: Fly solo across the United States.
　Both of Maggie’s parents used to be Air Force pilots, so the urge to fly in the sky is in Maggie’s DNA. So, she went to flight school, put in the hours with an instructor and started on her solo hours. But on her first solo takeoff, out of a small airport in Massachusetts, something didn’t sound right. The plane had lost one of the landing gear wheels(起落架轮).
　“As soon as I took off, I heard something,” Maggie said. “I just felt something was wrong instinctively.”
　Then her current instructor takes over, giving her clear instructions but also emphasizing that now she has to trust her own ability to fly and that it’s up to her to make this work. This is one of the core lessons in the private pilot licence (PPL): you are the captain of the aircraft and you must take responsibility for it. Luckily, the Piper Cub had plenty of gas, so her instructor had time to tell her how to operate from the ground while she circled a few times to gather herself.
　“I was just extremely frightened. I was thinking about all of the bad things that could have happened; I was thinking about how my parents were on the ground and I knew that they were watching.”
　Stress and panic can cause any of us to make hurry decisions. It takes mental practice to calm down. At 17 years old, most people are still struggling to park their cars. Yes, it takes a bit of practice. And once the car is parked, the day is packed with school activities and homework and just hanging out with friends. “Millions” of people could fall victim to scams using artificial intelligence to clone their voices, a UK bank has warned.
Starling Bank, an online-only lender, said scammers (欺诈者) are capable of using AI to copy a person’s voice from just three seconds of audio found in, for example, a video the person has posted online.Scammers can then identify the person’s friends and family members and use the AI-cloned voice to stage a phone call to ask for money.
These types of scams have the potential to “catch millions out”,Starling Bank said.They have already affected hundreds.According to a survey of more than 3,000 adults that the bank conducted with Mortar Research last month, more than a quarter of respondents said they have been targeted by an AI voice-cloning scam in the past 12 months.
The survey also showed that 46% of respondents weren’t aware that such scams existed, and that 8% would send over as much money as requested by a friend or family member, even if they thought the call seemed strange.
“People regularly post content online which has recordings of their voice, without ever imagining it’s making them more vulnerable to Scammers,” said Lisa Grahame, chief information security officer at Starling Bank.
The bank is encouraging people to agree a “safe phrase” with their loved ones—a simple, random phrase that’s easy to remember and different from their other passwords—that can be used to verify their identity over the phone.
The lender advises against sharing the safe phrase over text, which could make it easier for scammers to find out, but, if shared in this way, the message should be deleted once the other person has seen it.
