Feral House Cats Have Invaded Hawaii
流浪/野化家猫入侵了夏威夷
When Mark Twain first set eyes on Honolulu in 1866, he observed that the trees were so dense that they blocked the sunlight, lava from past volcanic eruptions covered the corals—and cats were everywhere. Nearly 160 years later, however, the descendants of the cats that so delighted Twain are now widely seen as a threat to the islands. The feral cat, explains the Hawaii Invasive Species Council (HISC), has become one of the state’s most “devastating” predators.
Cats were first brought to Hawaii aboard European colonists’ ships, where they preyed on rats and mice. As their number in their new home grew during the 19th century, birds started to disappear. At least 30 types of native bird became more scarce or went extinct between 1870 and 1930 as they were exposed to their new whiskered foes(长胡子的敌人), according to the US Geological Survey.
Birds are not the only victims of Hawaii’s cats’ invasion. Toxoplasmosis is a disease caused by a parasite that reproduces in the digestive systems of cats, and then contaminates soil and water through their faeces.
Feral cats are not just a problem for Hawaii. A study suggests that, globally, they are responsible for the extinction of at least 14% of bird, mammal and reptile island species. Toxoplasmosis has also been found to kill sea otters along the California coast.
What can be done A bill that could have directed the HISC to kill cats using poisoned bait, as Australia has done, died in the state legislature earlier this year. Animal lovers prefer to focus on capturing, neutering and releasing wild cats so that they have no kittens. But HISC contends that such programmes do not actually help curtail cat numbers. Ms West, a professor of the University of Hawaii, suggests that people are too quick to blame the cats, when there is another criminal. “People have to stop abandoning these poor cats, ” she says. “It’s not really a cat problem. It’s a human problem. ”

“I’m going to miss you so much, Poppy, ” said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions get the better of him.
His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile. “I guess this is it, ” he said. “I’ll see you back home in a month, okay ” His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy’s mother turned to the dog, “Okay, Poppy, time to go back home. ”
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn’t seem interested in her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit. Poppy didn’t.
They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn’t her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. “What should we do to cheer Poppy up ” asked Dad. “We’ve tried everything. ”
“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy, ” smiled Mom. “Without anybody left in the house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let’s get a little dog for Poppy. ”
It didn’t take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home as usual, but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her tail began wagging(摆动) ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.

理的结合
For coffee lovers, the future is shaping up to be bitter and pricey, as climate change roasts the world’s key growing regions. Farmers have to dig deeper to get water.
Tougher growing conditions have led Vietnamese farmers to question the value of coffee as a cash crop, with some pulling out their trees to plant black pepper and other tropical fruits. Reduced supply has already pushed the robusta(罗布斯塔) price in 2024 to the highest level since at least 2008—and still, rising temperatures mean future production will fall short.
Regions suitable for crop production are being reduced globally primarily due to increased heat. Hardier varieties are expected to fare better, and for coffee that means strong, earthy robusta. Researchers found that it would be necessary to adapt, including by replacing arabica(阿拉比卡) with hardier robusta. However, robusta is not a silver bullet for climate change. Researchers are still learning robusta’s limits though it’s more tolerant to heat and to some diseases and pests.
Prolonged dry periods in Vietnam and lack of irrigation water in recent years have already severely affected the productivity of robusta coffee farms in the Central Highlands, according to a study published in 2021. In an October report, World Coffee Research(WCR) said the world may face robusta shortages of as much as 35 million bags in 2040 when taking into account rising consumption trends and the impact of climate change on production. The world currently produces close to 80 million bags of robusta a year.
Farmers are seeing the benefits of more sustainable farming practices. Farmers have cut back on chemical fertilisers and provided shade for coffee shrubs(灌木) so they’re less exposed to the burning sun. They have also planted black pepper to diversify. When applying these practices, they have more income, and they can save a lot of labour. Lien, who began planting coffee nearly thirty years ago, said, “Now I see my coffee better developed, with better yields. ”

阅读 理解 5—8 √ 护鸟与生态旅游 2026·南通模拟 人与自然 和生物的结合
Soon after Mr & Mrs Bacchus started farming their little patch of land, they faced a major problem—a plague of birds fed on their precious crops. Then, a man stopped on the road outside their house, and asked the couple if he could take photographs of the birds on the property. Afterwards, he suggested that instead of trying to get rid of the birds, they should learn to live alongside them, and Maraksacha Reserve was born.
Today, the couple credit this man, the celebrated bird photographer Manu Espinosa, with changing their lives, and helping them persuade others of the vital importance of conservation in this region.
Birding tourism is flourishing in Ecuador, with increasing numbers of specialist tour groups. Ecuador contains a variety of ecosystems at different elevations, which helps explain why it’s among the top 10 countries in the world for bird diversity. The country is home to over 1, 600 bird species—nearly double the number found in all of Europe—within an area just slightly larger than the UK.
As the business of birding grows, more and more farmers are switching their land from agriculture to bird reserves, benefiting not just the birds, but the country’s economy too. One notable example is the Ajila family, who have devoted themselves to preserving the long-wattled umbrellabird. On his land near Recinto, landowner Luis Ajila has switched from dairy farming to conservation, replanting trees and promoting the site to wildlife tourists—work that he says is a better livelihood than farming.
“Wildlife tourism is much more profitable than farming, but that wasn’t our only motivation, ” says Luis Jr. , Ajila’s son. “We aimed to protect not just the umbrellabird, but all the unique wildlife here, safeguarding them for future generations. ”
Since 2005, Angel Paz has transformed his former dairy farm into a bird reserve. At first, things didn’t go according to plan: it took a month for the first visitor to arrive, and he paid just $10 for a four-hour tour.
” —https://www. (同源高考:2022年全国乙卷C篇阅读选自本网站)

阅读 理解 1—4 √ 气候变化对咖啡和农民的影响 2026·昆明模拟 人与自然 和生物、地 理的结合

Since then, however, thousands of people have made the pilgrimage. “I have protected my home and its birdlife for almost two decades, and finally watched the wildlife—and the people who visit—flourish, ” Angel Paz says.
