(Text 10)
I’m standing here at the site of Duckbill rock.Unfortunately,as you can see,the broken pile of rocks behind me is all that is left.As locals know,Duckbill rock was a huge stone that was formed over many centuries by wind and water. But last weekend,a group of high school students came down to the beach and pushed it over.Afterwards, they took a photo standing on top of the remains, laughing and joking. It was witnessed by a family, and they immediately called the police. This is similar to a story we heard earlier this year about a one-thousand-year-old tree that was cut down in a national park in California. As of now, there have been no charges from the police, but the public seems to be responding in anger. While the parents of the kids are hoping for a more favourable reaction, only time will tell how the people of Oregon recover from the damage that has been done to their local history.

Leafy green vegetables are a great way to improve your health as they possess many vital nutrients, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They are also low in calories, making them a good choice for those who want to manage their weight. The following salad leaves in your diet are highly recommended by nutritionists.
Spinach
Spinach is easy to get all year round. It is a good source of antioxidants, which can reduce the risk of many diseases, including heart disease and certain cancers. It’s best eaten uncooked,as part of a salad,as cooking tends to destroy the naturally occurring nutrients in the leaves.

Collard greens are a good source of lutein, which is important for eye health. They are full of vitamins A and C and minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc, copper and selenium, and they are a good source of fibre.

If you’re in the mood for leafy green vegetables with a fresh, slightly bitter and peppery taste, consider adding rocket to your plate.Rocket is packed with nitrates, which, studies have shown, can boost performance in sports.Rocket is also rich in vitamins K and C,and calcium and polyphenols.
Romaine lettuce
Romaine lettuce is a good source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A,K,C and folate (叶酸).These nutrients are essential for maintaining overall health and supporting a healthy immune system.Romaine is a source of fibre too, which is known to reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and bowel cancer.

It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation,it turns into an argument between a crazy mother and a single-minded son.We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly my mother will push the conversation into “the Third World War”.She’ll talk about my lack of bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment,I don’t want to do any jobs related to science, either. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major in English, she nearly had a heart attack.
“Why can’t you be like my friend’s son ” she shouts all the time. Her friend’s son received a four-year scholarship (奖学金) and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer.I don’t know what to say except that I simply can’t be like Mr. Perfect as I’ve called the unnamed friend’s son.I am the type of the person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve something because of loving it,not because of money.
I understand why my mother is worried about my future major.I’ve seen my mother struggle to raise me on her small salary and work long hours.Tired as she is,she still cooks supper for me and then does other housework staying up late into the night.
I fully understand that what my mother has done is out of her deep love for me.However,I want her to know that I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future.

Out on the graceful avenues and main roads of Paris,a battle has been approaching.
A century and a half after Baron Haussmann plowed (犁地) through the city to straighten out and broaden the narrow twisted streets, the Mayor of Paris,Anne Hidalgo,a kind of anti-Haussmann,has slowly been reducing the size of main roads for years.
Part of her environmental plan is to clean up air pollution and make the city friendly for bicycles and other two wheeled vehicles like electric scooters (踏板车).“I think it could be a good idea—not to have cars in the town centres and the motorists who love four wheels. It’s a bit of a war of the bikes and scooters against cars,” the Mayor said.High speed lanes along the Seine, which people in the suburbs relied on to and from Paris each day, have been shut down to make room for joggers and cycles. This is part of a Paris Administration’s dream of getting rid of cars in Paris as much as possible.
The Mayor wants to transform the big space and today the big space is occupied by cars, and car drivers.“We have half of the public space in Paris, which is dedicated to cars,” she said. But for motorists,it is as bad as the reduction of the speed limit on most streets in town to 30 kilometres. The constant flashes of speed radar cameras bare witness to how many motorists just can’t bring themselves to go that slow. They say the reduced speed limits are just another way to get the cars out of the city.
The head of a motorist association claims commuters (通勤者) have no alternative but to use their cars because public transportation is overcrowded and often unreliable. And for those who live around Paris,it’s really unfair. They need their cars,or they can’t go to work. It’s something incredible. And so while Paris has taken major action to rid the streets of automobiles and make the city more bicycle friendly, going green is not proving to be politically very simple.

Artificial intelligence has become a part of our lives, changing the way we live, work, and interact.AI systems are capable of processing vast amounts of data, analysing patterns, and producing valuable insights and have changed various industries.
In the field of healthcare,AI-powered systems can help doctors and researchers a lot, reducing waiting times for test results and identifying patterns and trends that can be used to more accurately diagnose and treat patients.AI can identify data patterns in minutes or even seconds that would otherwise take a doctor or a researcher weeks or even months.By analysing patient data from around the world,AI can identify some diseases that may not be known before. And this exchange of knowledge can lead to more accurate diagnoses, better treatments, and improved cure effects.
In the education field, professors and teachers across the world are faced with AI revolution and know what it means for them and their students. How many students will save time and energy by having AI write their essays and assignments rather than writing them themselves Will teachers and professors use AI to create their own lesson plans and assignments And we can see a rise of new anti-cheating tools and apps to fight against the essays created by AI.
Like any new technology, there is a certain amount of fear and a lot of questions to be answered on the use, exchange, advantages and disadvantages of AI,but one thing seems clear: By offering more access to information and services,AI can help create a better life.

第二节(满分25分)

Growing up,I was always around my grandma Meredith. She was the one who originally inspired my love for cooking and my dream of becoming a chef.Yet,one day I received a text that would turn my whole life around,“Grandma is seriously ill,” the text read,“and we need your help in assisting with her care.”
Without a second of hesitation,I agreed to travel back home.Thankfully,my boss at the restaurant let me take unpaid leave for the next several months so I could come home to help out with Gran. After driving across several states,I finally got back to our family home in West Virginia.Yet,what I saw was really hard for me to bear. The Meredith I saw then was not the lively, joyful Meredith I had seen while I was growing up.
“Tony!” she called to me from her bed.“It’s so good to see you!”
“Gran,” I sighed,“I’m not Tony.That’s Dad,your son.I’m Hank.”
This was the start of a months-long journey of helping out around the house-cooking,cleaning,and,most of all, keeping Gran in good health and good spirits.
Every day,I cooked delicious food to keep everyone’s spirits high. But,secretly,I hoped that cooking some dishes that we had made together in my childhood would somehow help get Gran’s memory of me back,if not, just for a moment.
Stews (炖菜),chops (排骨),and roasts—I served all of these to Gran and my parents around the clock. When I wasn’t taking Gran out for strolls (散步) in her wheelchair or changing her bed sheets,I was cooking.I had cooked for dignitaries (显要人物) while at the restaurant in New York City, but never had I poured my heart out into my meals than I did then for Grandma Meredith.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:

Sharon Estill Taylor has no firsthand memories of her father. The World War Ⅱ fighter pilot was shot down over Germany in April 1945,when Taylor was just three weeks old. When Taylor was young, her grandmother often shared stories about their fallen hero.“Nana,it’s OK,” Taylor assured her,“I’m going to find him and bring him home.”
Grandmother gave Taylor a silver box containing some 450 handwritten letters between her parents, spanning from their high school to the year 1945.Also included were six months’ worth of unopened letters.Taylor learnt that on April 13,1945,Estill had taken off to attack a railway station and destroy Nazi supply lines. She found a reference to a possible crash site near the town of Elsnig in eastern Germany.
With the collapse of the Berlin Wall,it became possible for Taylor to visit the potential crash site. She connected with German military historian Hans-Guenther Ploes, who agreed to help her try to find and identify any aircraft and human remains. In 2005,a team, accompanied by Ploes and Taylor, led a three-week unearthing. From the moment she set foot on the site,Taylor could feel that her dad was there.DNA analysis confirmed that the remains were his.On a sunny day,Taylor and her family buried her father’s remains at Arlington National Cemetery.Beyond fulfilling her promise to her grandmother,Taylor says her mission has been to get closer to her father and his legacy.
She has also come to realise that there’s an entire population of Americans who’ve lost parents and loved ones in military conflicts overseas and wished they knew more.Taylor shares her story widely, raising awareness of soldiers who never return from war and the significance of recovery efforts. An estimated 81,000 American service members’ bodies remain unaccounted for from past conflicts, but fortunately there are constant efforts to locate the fallen and bring relief to their families.

Language gradually shifts over time.Much research examines how social and environmental factors influence language change, but very little deals with the forces of human cognitive (认知的) selection that fix certain words into the dictionary. For an extensive new study, published in a famous journal of USA,scientists investigated just that.
In an experiment much like a game of telephone, thousands of participants read English-language stories and rewrote them to be read by other participants, who then rewrote them for others.Only certain words from the first stories survived in the final versions.Researchers analysed the word types speakers consistently favoured, theorising that such preferences drive language change over time. The scientists also separately analysed two large collections of English historical texts from the past two centuries, containing more than 40 billion words — again seeing only certain types survive.
The results show three features that give words an “evolutionary (进化的) advantage” by helping them stick in the brain:First, words typically acquired at an early age (such as “hand” “uncle” or “today”) are much more stable.Next, concrete words remain better than abstract ones:“dog” persists longer than “animal”,which persists longer than “organism”.Lastly,
emotionally exciting words — whether negative or positive — tend to continue to exist.
Early language-evolution models assumed that language becomes increasingly complex over time. But Indiana University Bloomington cognitive scientist Fritz Breithaupt says the new study supports a more recent theory that language finally gets more efficient and easier to understand.
Still,as the study notes,“the English language is not baby talk.” Breithaupt explains,“We shift toward simple language, but then we also grab complex language that we need.” New words that address the complexity of modern life may somewhat balance out this shift.

[A]To identify how cognitive selection affects language change.

[C]To find out why language gradually shifts over time.
[D]To figure out what words are easily included in the dictionary.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A couple of months before I started my college,my parents gave me the greatest gift: a cellphone.I lived on that phone all summer with my face buried in its screen.I ignored my family and my surroundings (周围事物).Being connected was more important than being present.
So,you can imagine my displeasure when I learnt what my dad had planned for our family vacation that year.“This year,” my dad said,“we’ll be doing something special. We’re going camping!” His excitement was met with a disappointed sigh (叹气).It wasn’t my dream vacation because my mind was on my phone.I was so buried in the screen,in fact, that the first time I can remember truly looking up was when we drove across a bridge on the way to our campsite.
I stared out the window and saw redwoods towering above us,their branches threatening to pierce (刺破) the blue sky.I saw a roaring river, with slivers of silky black water appearing between crashing white rapids. The air blowing into the car from the open windows was hot.But none of that mattered to me.The reason I had looked up was for something far more serious: my phone no longer had service.
The last hour of the drive was increasingly tense. My dad announced that he had chosen a campsite that had no cell service, and that my phone would be useless until we returned home.I would be trapped in the forest for four days with no way to contact the outside world! I went through the full cycle of teenage emotions during the first day of the trip.I raged (发怒).I bargained.I begged.I flip-flopped (转变) from a depressive state to anger and back.
I went to bed angrily that night. But when I awoke in the morning, something had changed.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
Instead of burying myself in my phone,I focused on something else: my surroundings.
Paragraph 2:
The next four days passed in a flash with many fun activities.

  One possible version:
Instead of burying myself in my phone,I focused on something else: my surroundings.I let the noise of the wilderness wash over me,animals and bugs creating a scene that was both loud and peaceful at the same time. My anger turned to peace, then little interest and, finally, excitement. Standing on the high campsite,I felt the weight of stress melt from my shoulders as I viewed the vast expanse that unfolded below me.The sight that met my startled eyes nearly took my breath away .For the first time,I thought camping in a place that had no cell service might not be so bad.
The next four days passed in a flash with many fun activities.I hiked.I swam.I fished. My dad and I learnt how to start a fire together after several false starts. We cooked together and I ate the sweetest marshmallows I had ever tasted.Mum and Dad told me stories of their life,
stories I had never heard or perhaps I hadn’t been listening. When the weekend came to an end,I realised I hadn’t thought of my phone once.I hadn’t felt the need to be connected to anywhere else.It dawned on me that what mattered most were the moments I was sharing with just my parents and nature.核心素养提升UNIT 11(A卷)

Serengeti National Park is a 5,700-square-mile wildlife park in Tanzania,Africa. It is one of the world’s oldest nature systems, and it has the most animals of any area on the planet. There are 2,500 lions,200,000 zebras, and 518 species of birds in the park.Every year, about 1.5 million wild animals travel 1,600 miles across the park in search of food and fresh water. This amazing event draws thousands of tourists every year.In early November,
when the rains begin, the animals make their way south toward the grasslands. When the water sources dry up,they head north for the next three to four months to drink, and to eat the delicious plants along the way.In February, when the new babies are born, lions begin to follow a group of wild animals in hopes of an easy meal.In June, most of the wild animals will gather by the rivers that cross the northern part of the grasslands. This provides an unforgettable event for photographers, because many animals are eaten by crocodiles as they attempt to cross the river.July and August are the top months for tourists, however, due to the small amount of rain. There are two other areas of the park other than the grasslands. The Western Area is forested, and this is where the crocodiles and monkeys live. The Northern Serengeti is home to many elephants.

Taylor will never know exactly what her father’s final moments were like, but she feels,in a way, that father has finally come home.

When the weekend came to an end,I realised I hadn’t thought of my phone once.I hadn’t felt the need to be connected to anywhere else.It dawned on me that what mattered most were the moments I was sharing with just my parents and nature.

[B]A friend of the author’s mother.
[C]A successful engineer.

( )27.What can be inferred about the author from the passage
[A]He doesn’t like his mother’s friend’s son.

( )28.What’s the purpose of the Mayor’s plan
[A]To object to Baron Haussmann.
[B]To create a greener city.
[C]To start a war of bikes against cars.
[D]To get rid of cars in Paris.
( )29.What do the motorists think of the plan
[A]Debatable.
[B]Problem-solving.
[C]Economical.
[D]Environment-friendly.
( )30.What’s the main difficulty of carrying out the plan
[A]The present road condition.
[B]Shortage of government funding.
[C]Many unsolvable practical problems.
[D]Lack of public environmental awareness.
( )31.Which can be a suitable title for the text
[A]Paris: A Livable City
[B]Paris: Cars or Bikes
[C]Paris: A Bicycle City
[D]Paris: Green is Coming!

Chinese civilization is one of the oldest civilizations in human history and is still flourishing today. The combination of AI and Chinese cultural heritage will not only open up new paths for the development of AI technology, but will also bring new opportunities for the development of Chinese civilization.
( )32.In what way can AI-powered systems help doctors and researchers
[A]Analysing patient data worldwide.
[B]Taking more time for medical test.
[C]Identifying data patterns in a longer time.
[D]Making quicker diagnoses with patients.
( )33.What can we learn from the questions in Paragraph 3
[A]Professors and teachers are against the use of AI.
[B]Teachers and professors will use AI to give lessons.
[C]More anti-cheating tools and apps should be developed.
[D]Students might use AI to finish their writing tasks.
( )34.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage
[A]AI will bring us more advantages than disadvantages.
[B]There is no need to worry about the use of AI.
[C]AI can provide us with free access to information and services.
[D]AI has the potential to create a better life.
( )35.What is the author’s attitude to the combination of AI and Chinese cultural heritage
[A]Disapproving. [B]Curious.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was almost at my breaking point,I decided to make something simple.
Paragraph 2:
After taking a few bites,Gran finally called out my name — my actual name.
