Dear Principal,
I am Li Hua, President of the Student Union. I am writing to bring to your attention the growing problem of stray cats on our campus.
Recently, the increasing number of stray cats has caused significant concerns. Due to unauthorized feeding, these cats frequently wander into classrooms to forage, which seriously disturbs lessons. More worryingly, a student was scratched by a cat recently, posing a potential threat to everyone’s safety.
To solve this, I propose two suggestions. First, it is advisable to contact local animal protection organizations to professionally relocate and care for these cats. Second, the school could set up warning signs and launch safety education campaigns to remind students not to feed or tease the animals.
I sincerely hope my suggestions will be considered. I am willing to assist in creating a safe and harmonious campus.
Thank you for considering my suggestions.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
【答案】 In the darkness, they supported each other and went upstairs step by step with the light of the flashlight. The water had already seeped into the stairwell, making each step slippery and dangerous. Mary clung tightly to her parents’hands, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and determination. When they finally reached Mrs. Thomson’s door, Dad knocked gently but firmly. After what felt like an eternity, the door creaked open, revealing Mrs. Thomson’s frightened face. “Thank goodness you’re here!” she whispered, her voice trembling. They quickly helped her gather her essential belongings and led her back downstairs to their apartment, where they all huddled together, finding comfort in each other's presence.
Suddenly, a bunch of searching light from a rescue boat flashed across Mrs. Thomson’s window. “Look!” Mary exclaimed, pointing excitedly. Dad grabbed the flashlight and waved it back and forth, signaling for help. Within minutes, they heard the sound of voices and the gentle lapping of the boat against the building. The rescue team arrived just in time, helping them all into the boat and to safety. As they sailed away from the flooded apartment, Mary looked back, feeling grateful for the bravery and love that had kept them together through the storm.2025-2026学年湖南湘潭县第一中学高一下学期期中考试英语试题

Nature was Chen Rui’s “childhood home”. The 37-year-old researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Zoology wasn’t able to talk until he was 4 years old. He didn’t have friends around his age, which led him to turn his attention to non-human things around him. He became extremely interested in the world of insects. “The happiest time of my childhood was in the farm fields. I squatted (蹲) there, observing the activities of insects, including ants building their homes and dragonflies flying low. I had so many questions about their activities and was full of curiosity about this world,” says Chen.
The experiences in his childhood planted a seed deep in his heart. Decades later, he’s a scholar who has engaged in life-science investigations in nearly 100 countries and regions on five continents. He has found around 100 new species living and extinct. “I was ‘healed’ by nature,” he says. “I wanted to grow up to share the power of nature with more young people and to popularize understanding of animals, including insects.
He has ever visited the Amazon rainforest several times, trying to discover new species. One insect variety he found was leaf-cutter ants, a species that shows powerful cooperation and farming abilities. He is impressed by their close cooperation. He observed that the ants are divided into different groups that are respectively responsible for cutting leaves, transporting harvested pieces, clearing obstacles out of the way, guarding the colony and taking care of the young. “Several million ants can live in one nest, but their activities are very orderly,” says Chen.
Chen points out that leaf-cutter ants are not the only species to have magical abilities. “If we humans believe we are the smartest beings in the world, we may be limited to this preconception (成见). If we are instead humble and regard all other beings as our teachers, we can gain endless wisdom,” he says.
4. Why did Chen Rui focus his attention on insects in his childhood
A. He loved playing in the farm fields every day.
B. He wanted to become a researcher in the future.
C. He couldn’t talk and had no friends his own age.
D. His parents asked him to observe insect activities.
5. What can be inferred about Chen Rui from the second paragraph
A. Discovering new species is his primary research goal.
B. His childhood loneliness directly led to his career choice.
C. He intends to inspire young people with nature’s healing power.
D. He believes only by working in many countries can he popularize animal protection.
6. What aspect of leaf-cutter ants’ behavior impresses Chen most
A. Their skill in building large underground nests.
B. Their strong and powerful defense against enemies.
C. Their ability to communicate through sound signals.
D. Their highly organized division of labor among groups.
7. What does Chen Rui expect people to do
A. Apply theories to our lives.
B. Take inspiration from other species.
C. Explore the world of science.
D. Protect non-human things around us.
C
Eight hours shovelling snow in -20℃ might not sound like the ideal day out, but a committed team of volunteers in Finland are working dawn to dusk building enormous snow drifts (雪堆) for one of the world’s most endangered seals.
The Saimaa ringed seal was once common around Lake Saimaa in the south-east of Finland, but now only 495 of them remain. In the late 1980s the population of the seals decreased to its lowest point, with fewer than 200 left, driven by hunting and deaths caused by fish traps. Accidental deaths in fishing nets remain a challenge. Now, the seals are fully protected but the threat of the climate emergency is worrying. The seals make “snow caves” inside snow drifts where they raise their young and protect them from the elements and predators such as red foxes, but as the climate warms, the snow is disappearing.
To save these rare seals, 300 volunteers spend days shovelling snow into piles 7m long and 1.5m high around the edge of the frozen lake. “It’s kind of a snow cave,” says Vincent Biard, a PhD student and volunteer from the University of Eastern Finland. “The seals come from under and dig into the snow drifts to create a cave where they can give birth and raise their young.” They get around on foot or skis, dragging their equipment with them over a distance of 10km. Biard describes the day as “kind of fun”, and adds, “you actually have an impact, which is nice. If we don’t do it, then they would just go extinct quite quickly.”
More than 300 pups have been born in artificial snowdrifts since they started making them in 2014. “We are on a rising growth curve, so things still look pretty nice,” says Jari Ilmonen, coordinator of Our Saimaa Seal Life, which is an EU-funded programme. “We are doing what we can, so we have to have hope and positive thoughts.” Human-made snow drifts are larger and “more durable than natural snow drifts”, says Ilmonen. “By the first half of February most of the natural ones had melted away, but the manmade ones stood strong.”
8. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The two functions of snow drifts. B. The threats to the Saimaa ringed seals.
C. The big concern about global warming. D. The full recovery of the seals’ population.
9. Which of the following can best describe the work of the volunteers
A. Effective but boring. B. Valuable but impractical.
C. Demanding but fulfilling. D. Dangerous but enjoyable.
10. What does Ilmonen say about manmade snow drifts
A. They can help all marine life survive winters.
B. They are more comfortable than natural ones.
C. They will not melt until the end of the spring.
D. They have seen progress in protecting the seals.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To celebrate an effort to protect wildlife. B. To introduce one of endangered animals.
C. To explain benefits of artificial snowdrifts. D. To raise the awareness of the climate crisis.
D
Light pollution has increased by about 10 percent each year over the past decade. Researchers based at the Chinese Academy of Sciences were curious about how light might affect relationships between insects and plants. They noticed that tree leaves in cities typically showed fewer signs of insect damage than those outside of cities, so they analyzed leaf samples from trees throughout Beijing.
Focusing on two common street trees — the Japanese pagoda and green ash tree — at 30 sites spaced apart along main roads lit at night, the researchers measured brightness and collected leaves. They evaluated almost 5,500 leaves for size, toughness, and levels of nutrients and chemicals, and analyzed them for signs of insect activity.
Examining leaf features can tell scientists a lot about how that plant is using resources. Plants grow differently depending on factors in their environment, and they distribute their limited resources among various functions like growth, reproduction, and defense.
For both species of trees the researchers studied, more artificial light meant tougher leaves. And the tougher the leaf, the less evidence of hungry insects. In areas with the most intense light, leaves were more likely to have no signs of insect predation (捕食). “This research needs to be expanded to other plant species,” said Shuang Zhang, biologist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. “If artificial light at night also makes the leaves of other species tougher, this would be bad news for insects.” Changes in plants, and in interactions between plants and animals, can significantly impact the entire urban ecosystem.
A poor diet might cause plant-eating insects to die off, resulting in fewer insects that prey on those plant-eating insects, and fewer insect-eating birds, and so on up the food chain. Beyond forming a crucial link in the food web, plant-eating insects sometimes pollinate (授粉) flowers and contribute to biodiversity.
The study found a linear relationship between brightness at night and how much leaves were eaten by insects, so just reducing light intensity could make leaves more appealing to insects. To minimize the negative impacts of light at night, Zhang recommends simply reducing light intensity. We should focus on lighting only what and when it is needed. Motion sensors could also help, as could covers for streetlights, so light doesn’t spill into surrounding areas.
12. What drew the researchers’ attention to tree leaves in cities
A. They grew faster with light on. B. They took on different shapes.
C. They showed no signs of diseases. D. They were less damaged by insects.
13. What is Shuang Zhang’s concern according to paragraph 4
A. Insects will adapt to tougher leaves quickly.
B. Tougher leaves could affect the urban ecosystem.
C. Plants will stop growing in areas with intense light.
D. Artificial light may change how plants use resources.
14. What does the underlined word “linear” in the last paragraph mean
A. Complex. B. Direct. C. Natural. D. Positive
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Little Insects Make a Big Difference.
B. Less Light Pollution Makes for a Better City.
C. Artificial Lights: The Root Cause of Insect Extinction.
D. Streetlights Influence Nature: From Leaves to Insects.

Why Literature Matters
When we think of literature, we often picture dusty books on library shelves — stories written long ago by authors we’ll never meet. ____16____ It speaks to us across time and space, offering both escape and understanding.
Good literature serves as both a mirror and a window. As a mirror, it reflects our own experiences back to us. ____17____ We recognize ourselves in their struggles and joys, feeling less alone in the world. This connection can be deeply comforting, especially during the confusing years of adolescence.
____18____ It allows us to step into lives completely different from our own. We can walk through the streets of Victorian London with Charles Dickens, feel the weight of racism with Maya Angelou, or experience the challenges of immigrating to a new country with contemporary authors. Through these literary journeys, our capacity for empathy grows.
Reading literature also strengthens our minds in unique ways. Unlike watching a film, where images are provided for us, reading requires us to actively build worlds in our imagination. ____19____ This mental exercise helps develop critical thinking skills that are valuable in every area of life.
In a world of quick clicks, literature invites us to slow down. It asks us to sit with complex ideas and to care about people who exist only on pages. ____20____
A. Perhaps that is why literature truly matters.
B. Literature also builds empathy by acting as a window.
C. Literature, however, is far from dust or distance.
D. This process improves concentration and creativity.
E. We see characters facing dilemmas similar to our own.
F. It helps us understand the world through different eyes.
G. Young people today read less than previous generations.

Another wildly bright lightning along with a thunder cracked in the sky! Mary swiftly threw herself into her Mum’s arms, burying her face into her chest and trembling with fright. “I think we should leave here right away!” She murmured in a crying tone. Instantly, Dad refused her request again for the fact that the city had already been flooded severely. As he saw through their window, the almost three-meter-high floodwater had already surrounded the apartment building like a wide river, several cars floating on it just like boats.
“Black out!” Mary gasped fearfully, the wind roaring and the rain beating on the roof and windows, which made her even more nervous in the whole darkness. Mum took Mary’s hand and carefully led her to sit on the sofa, trying her best to comfort her. While she performed calmly, Mary could tell she was nervous too. “Let’s try to find a light source first and then see what other supplies we have.” Dad made an arrangement. Luckily, there was a flashlight, some packages of instant noodles, bread and some drinking water, which may help them get through the toughness for the half of the night. Without saying a single word, Dad turned on the flashlight, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. Only the light of the flashlight could now give them some warmth and a sense of little hope.
“What about Mrs. Thomson Old and weak, she must be extremely helpless.” Mum said with great concern when she thought about their nice neighbor who lived alone upstairs of the same building. After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad decided they should go and check whether Mrs. Thomson was fire. Mary, with heavy breath and pounding heart, stood up immediately, ready to bring all their supplies to Mrs. Thomson’s house.
