Sports and Health
As we know, the column Teenage Life of our school newspaper is intended to draw students’ attention into “Sports and Health”, for which I am absolutely willing to share my perspectives.
It is a common sense that regular exercises benefit us in various ways. Not only can it serve as a chance for students to strengthen a good figure in face of increasing learning burden but also it is central to promoting personal mental well-being. In the course of doing sports, it’s highly recommended that students should work out a reasonable timetable in compliance with their physical quality and curriculum arrangement.
I sincerely wish everyone would take an active part into sports and gain more insight into the benefits it conveys because of our endeavors.
[Version 2]
Sports and health
Learning that the column Teenage Life of our school English newspaper is committed to casting a light on the topic “Sports and health”, I am more than thrilled to express my view.
The reasons why we should work out regularly are that not only does it build up our bodies, but it boosts our learning efficiency as well. Based on such a meaningful theme, a wide variety of activities are highly recommended. Additionally, several health professionals can be invited to give some lectures about how to do daily exercise properly after all the competitions.
Only by raising the awareness of taking exercise and participating actively can we truly enjoy the benefits it brings. I believe every participant will achieve something amazing.
【答案】The next morning, Clara uploaded a new video. This time, her camera swept across the leather album’s sketches of Timmy’s curved spoon and lingered on a yellowed newspaper clipping featuring his iconic stairs. As Grandfather narrated their story, she zoomed in on his hands — wrinkled yet steady — shaping a piece of wood into art. The video ended with his voice, “Hands remember stories machines forget.” By noon, comments exploded, “Hands of a legend!” “Need this magic in my home!” Shares of the video skyrocketed. Amid the flood of praise, Clara spotted a message, “I’m coming to see you soon, Master-back to where the magic began!” Her eyes widened at Timmy’s profile picture which just matched the same grin from that faded photo.
A week later, Timmy, now a famous furniture designer, walked in the workshop. He embraced Grandfather, tears glistening. “Your spoon taught me curves have souls,” he said, placing the curved spoon on the desk. Together, they designed a signature chair — Timmy sketching modern lines on his tablet while Grandfather penciling his classic curves. Clara captured the moment: their four hands shaping a maple chair leg together, mirroring the one Grandfather had glued a week before. When Timmy posted the video, orders poured in: new chairs with curved legs, and even wooden benches for the town park. Wood shavings danced in the sunlight as the workshop came back to life, the order book’s empty February page now filled with March’s growing demands.2025-2026学年湖南株洲市南方中学春季学期期中考试高一英语试题本试卷满分150分,考试时间120分钟

Storytelling is as old as culture. Many societies have long-established storytelling traditions. The stories, and performances thereof, function to entertain as well as educate. But not all stories are historically correct or even true. Truth is less important than providing cultural cohesion (凝聚性) . Here are some examples of storytelling as a method of passing down cultural traditions.
Choctaw Storytelling
Like all Native American tribes, the Choctaw have an oral storytelling tradition going back generations. The Choctaw oral tradition includes two creation stories: One relates to their coming from the west and the other to creation from a mound (山岗) . In addition, the oral tradition includes history as well as life lessons or moral teachings. Many of the Choctaw traditional tales employ animal characters to teach such lessons in a humorous way.
Western African Storytelling
A long-standing part of western African culture is the griots (部族史说唱艺人) , who perform the functions of storyteller, genealogist, historian, ambassador, and more. The griots are traditionally family-based, with the profession or role passed down from one generation to the next. There are also griot schools, where more formal training can be had.
Native Hawaiian Storytelling
Traditionally, Native Hawaiian storytellers are honored members of society. Hawaiian storytelling is not limited to words alone — it includes mele (song) , oli (chant) , and hula (dance) as well as talking. Hawaiians value the stories because they not only are entertaining, but also teach the next generation about behavior, values, and traditions.
Irish Storytelling
The seanchaí were the traditional Irish keepers of story. They told the old myths as well as local news and happenings. Significant in the Irish oral tradition are tales of kings and heroes. Today, storytelling and interest in it seems to be making a comeback. As one Irish storyteller put it: “It’s a need for connection… I think storytelling builds connections with people in real life.”

A. Its historical truth. B. Its cultural function.
C. Its artistic significance. D. Its emotional value.

Have you ever felt worried about a friend but didn’t know how to ask if they were OK R U OK has started a national art competition to get those conversations started. The foundation has invited high school students in Years 7 and 8 to create a piece of art that represents what an R U OK conversation means to them.
Research has shown that having caring conversations with friends and family who are struggling can make a big difference in how they feel. But asking if someone is OK isn’t always easy. This was something Will McMahon and Woody Whitelaw, judges of the competition, experienced when they were friends at school. They now hope to inspire other great mates to start meaningful conversations.
“It took us years to have a real conversation about what was going on for Will,” said Woody. “I knew he wasn’t OK. I just didn’t know how to ask, and I didn’t want to make it worse.”
Woody’s experience is not uncommon. New research from R U OK found three out of five young people who didn’t ask felt it wasn’t their place to do so, while half were afraid they would make things worse if they did. But Woody said he was glad he eventually speak up. “Since we started talking about what was really going on for Will, we’ve never been closer. In turn, he’s been there for me as I go through the highs and lows of life. We hope this competition gets young people talking, people like the younger Will and Woody,” Woody said.
In the competition, students can create an individual artwork under the given theme. The artwork could explore when a friend was there for them or when they were there for a friend. Or it could represent how a meaningful conversation makes them feel. “Art has a unique ability to start conversations and foster (促进) understanding,” said R U OK education and young people manager Dr Hannah Brown. “By attracting students creatively, R U OK wants to get young people thinking about how they can support each other and the many forms of mateship.”

C. The struggle to express concern. D. The difficulty in asking for help.
10. What may prevent young people from asking “Are you OK ”
A. The busy schedule. B. The shy character.
C. Coldness to others D. Fear of worsening the situation.
11. What can students gain from the competition according to Dr Brown
A. Good taste in art appreciation. B. A deep understanding of friendship.

London-based startup Brilliant Planet has rented 6,100 hectares of land in southern Morocco, situated between the Atlantc Ocean and the Sahara. And it’s using it to grow algae (藻类), which absorbs atmospheric carbon dioxide and sends out oxygen.
Brilliant Planet’s CEO Adam Taylor says the company has developed a way to grow algae at extreme rates starting in a glass cup in a lab and ending in 12,000-square-meter pools of locally-sourced seawater. The algae is obtained from the water then pumped up a 10-story tower and sprayed into the desert air. In the 30 seconds or so it takes to reach the ground, hot air dries the biomass (生物质) out, leaving hypersaline (超盐的) algae pieces which can be collected and shallow buried, sequestering (使隔绝) their carbon for thousands of years.
“Nature-based solutions are a great way of removing carbon,” Taylor said. “Deserts are an underused environment. It does not cost a lot of money to rent the desert. What’s more, you’re not competing with farms or forests. You’re out of the way, not bothering people.”
Taylor claims that Brilliant Planet’s solution can permanently remove 30 times more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere per hectare per year than a typical European forest. Brilliant Planet’s goal is to remove one million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year by the end of the decade.“Globally, we’ve identified about half a million square kilometers of flat desert-ocean land where it works,” Taylor said, adding that the company hopes to set up in Namibia next.
Fatna Ikrame El Fanne, an environmental engineer, described the use of algae as “a new and promising strategy” that “is a typical example of innovative use of natural process to address an urgent global issue.” Nevertheless, she expressed caution. “Microalgae production on a large scale might damage local ecosystems, lead to overuse of water resources, and change habitats,” she said.
There’s an acknowledgement that one company can’t do it all — and can’t go it alone. “We are part of a group of probably 40 to 50 wonderful ideas of how people can remove carbon from the atmosphere,” Taylor said, calling for “a Manhattan Project-type attitude” to tackling carbon capture. Whether algae is the solution the world needs remains to be seen. But the idea’s growing on people.
12. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about Brilliant Planet
A. Its establishment of an algae plant.
B. Its method of growing algae.
C. Its process of carbon capture.
D. Its daily routine in the desert.
13. What advantage did Taylor highlight about using deserts for carbon removal
A. Huge profits.
B. High temperature.
C. No occupation of rich land.
D. No biodiversity concerns.
14. What can be inferred about the use of algae from El Fanne’s words
A. It needs improving.
B. It is highly efficient.
C. It is not worth promoting.
D. It is commercially developed.
15. Why is “a Manhattan Project- type attitude” mentioned in the last paragraph
A. To highlight the challenges of carbon removal.

C. To prove the effectiveness of nature-based solutions.
D. To emphasize the necessity of joint efforts.

The old workshop door creaked open. Clara walked in quietly. Her shoes stepped on wood shavings (刨花) that sparkled in the sunlight. Through the dusty windows, the morning light shone on Grandfather’s rough hands. He was gluing a maple chair leg.
The wall calendar still showed January. Its yellowed pages were curling, just like dry leaves. An open order book lay on the desk. February’s page was empty. There had been no new orders since mid-January. Clara held her breath and recorded Grandfather with her phone. She focused on his quick hands as he measured angles with a metal ruler. “This might help him,” she thought, eager to show how skilled he was.
However, when she posted the video online, negative comments flooded in. “Old ways for a dying business!” “No wonder the business is failing!” Saddened, Clara deleted the video quickly. A spider crawled over the empty order book. Its blank pages showed not many people wanted handmade things these days.
“Want to see my treasure ” Grandpa’ s voice broke the silence. He opened a leather album filled with pencil sketches (草图) like library chairs from 1958 and park benches from 1962. A faded photo slipped out: a smiling boy missing two teeth was grinning at the camera, holding a curved (弯曲的) spoon proudly.
“Timmy, my former student,” Grandfather smiled, touching the curve of the spoon in the photo. “Now he designs furniture for tall buildings. Last month’s newspaper had an article about his curved stairs. It was inspired by this very spoon.” He tapped the photo, adding, “Machines make things fast, but hands remember stories.”
Clara looked at the photo — the curved spoon, Timmy’s smile, and Grandpa’s young handwriting on the back: Timmy’s first repair, age 7. Beside her, fresh wood shavings were shining. “Stories must be told,” Clara murmured, taking out her phone again. This time, she aimed to share not just the work, but the story behind it.
