屈原是战国时期爱国主义诗人。公元前278年，秦将白起攻破楚都郢（今湖北江陵），一生心系国家振兴的屈原于流放中得知，秦军破楚，楚将不国时，在五月初五，抱石跳汨(mì)罗江自尽，以死殉国。渔民急忙划船抢救打捞，人们包粽子投入江中，以免鱼虾伤害他的身体。久而久之，百姓缅怀纪念他，逐渐形成端午赛龙舟、吃粽子的习俗。
