On weekday mornings, my lab rings with uncontrollable laughter. We invite participants to experience Hektor, the tickle (挠痒痒) robot. In a typical session, participants sit in a chair while Hektor slides devices along the participants’ feet, and they report back on just how much each tickling on a scale of 1 to 10. We, meanwhile, track their facial expressions, heart rate, muscle activity, breathing, sweating and brain activity.
Tickling has long fascinated thinkers. Socrates called it a mix of pain and pleasure; Aristotle linked it to delicate skin; Darwin noted humans were most ticklish on rarely touched spots and in certain psychological contexts. Today, neuroscientists still wonder: Does tickling have a biological function What happens in our nervous system Why are some body areas more sensitive And why do people react differently Answering these could deepen our understanding of how the brain and body process perception, emotion, and movement.
The research to date suggests tickling may be an evolutionarily ancient behavior. Many primates (灵长类) do it, and rodents (like rats), touched on their belly, produce far more vocalizations and show brain activity similar to humans being tickled. Tickling also seems to transcend culture. In one study, participants with more than 20 cultural backgrounds, including people from the U.K., Poland, India and Hong Kong, listened to recordings of Germans laughing and could recognize which laughs were caused by tickling, as opposed to joy.

Despite decades of medical advances, detecting health-related molecules (分子) still relies on bodily liquids like blood, requiring blood draws from most patients, especially people with diabetes who need frequent finger pricks. However, researchers from the University of Chicago have developed a portable device named ABLE, which collects and detects molecules in the air. This 4×8-inch device is a potential game-changer for medicine and public health.
Detecting molecules in the air has long fallen behind liquid detection, mainly because target particles are extremely dilute — there may be only one in a trillion. To solve this problem, the team turned air into liquid. The device draws in air, adds water vapor with a humidifier, and cools it to turn air into small drops. These drops trap particles and slide into a small container, making detection easy with common tools used for liquid analysis.
Early tests proved its effectiveness. It caught easily evaporated (挥发的) coffee vapor, detected glucose in breath, identified E. coli in the air, and found signs of inflammation (炎症) in mice with unhealthy gut bacteria. Obviously, it solved the problem of capturing molecules that evaporate easily — a major worry during the device’s development.
The device was first inspired by the need for non-invasive tests for premature babies in ICUs. These fragile babies are likely to have health problems, and repeated blood tests may put them in danger. Doctors hope the device can track health signs without taking blood, protecting these high-risk patients. It also shows promise for diagnosing inflammatory bowel disease, though the related breath signs first need to be recorded. The team plans to improve and make it smaller to create a wearable device for daily use.
Besides medical uses, this achievement may open the door to new physics research on air impurities and state changes of matter. As a new tool for detecting air chemistry, ABLE fills the space between air and liquid molecule analysis, creating possibilities for various new developments in healthcare and science.
