From a young age, I usually topped my class, winning awards and praise. My parents were proud and I dreamed of becoming a doctor someday.
However, things began to change in my second year. My father found a new job so we moved, and I had to enter a new school. The new environment was a significant challenge. Although I tried my best to fit in, struggling to connect with my new classmates, I was still lonely and out of place.
I started avoiding homework, and even lost interest in school. By the end of this term, I had failed my final exam, letting down both my family and myself. Eventually, I made the decision to drop out.
For several years, I lived with deep regret. Then in 2014, I attended a children’s concert where a guest speaker shared a powerful message about the life-changing value of education. The words touched something in me. That evening, I wrote a heartfelt letter to my parents, pouring out my regrets and asking for a second chance to go back to school. To my relief, they said yes.
I was admitted to the school again, several years older than my classmates so the early days were even tougher. But I stayed focused and tried to rebuild my confidence. Gradually, I found my rhythm. I studied hard and reconnected with my classmates. Soon my grades improved. Teachers began to notice that and classmates grew respectful. I was chosen as the monitor. On the graduation day when I walked across the stage, I realised myself not a student but someone who had overcome a personal failure.
Looking back, I see now that my failure was a powerful teacher. It taught me to keep going and value a second chance. Most of all, it reminded me I am capable of writing my own story.

Listening to music daily after the age of 70 could greatly lower the risk of developing a brain disease like dementia. A major study from Monash University discovered this by analyzing data from over 10, 800 older adults. Those who often listened to music had a much lower chance of suffering from severe memory problems compared to those who seldom did. The research also explored the benefits of playing musical instruments, finding that people who played regularly also saw a significant drop in their risk.
The most powerful effects were seen in people who always listened to music. This group not only had a lower risk of the brain disease but also showed better overall thinking abilities and a stronger memory for daily bining both listening and playing music offered even greater protection against mental decline. Researchers suggest that music could be a simple and effective way for older people to maintain their mental health.
This finding is especially important as societies around the world face the challenges of an aging population. With people living longer, conditions that affect memory and thinking are becoming more common, creating pressure on families and healthcare systems. Therefore, finding easy-to-use methods to support brain health is a public health priority.
According to the lead scientist, with no known cure for such brain diseases, finding ways to prevent or delay them is extremely important. The study adds to evidence that our brain's health is not fixed. It can be influenced by our personal choices and environment. Thus, activities like listening to or playing music may be powerful lifestyle tools to promote a healthy mind as we age.

Poetry is maybe the most human of all human endeavors, which is thought least likely to be taken over by AI. But according to a recent study, this is not so, as non-experts rate AI poetry higher than poetry written by humans.
The researchers chose 10 famous poets: Samuel Butler, Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare... They then asked ChatGTP 3.5 to write poems in the style of each poet. And they asked the participants, who were not experts, to rate the work on 14 scales, like profundity, rhythm, originality, imagery, beauty, emotion, and overall quality.
What was surprising indeed is that most of these non-experts, when they were not told whether a poem was composed by AI or by a human systematically, ranked the ones that were actually written by AI higher than the ones written by humans.
What does this experiment show exactly The researchers are very clear that these findings were limited to non-experts. The research team’s own explanation has to do with participants’ lack of expertise, concluding that these non-experts preferred the AI poetry because it was less complicated, and more straightforward
This must be part of the story, but it’s not the whole story. Take another deeply human endeavor, wine-tasting, as an example. It was first reported that non-experts are very bad at making the simplest distinctions about wine, but shortly afterwards it was found that experts make the same kind of mistakes and sometimes they in fact made more mistakes.
Plus, it is usually tricky to do experiments on aesthetic (美学) appreciation. This experiment was about the participants’ self-report about their experiences and, as we know from literally thousands of studies, self-reports can be misleading in most contexts. So this experiment was not about the real aesthetic experience of poetry, which is what really maters. It was about what participants thought about their aesthetic experience.
The study is important and creative. But it doesn’t show that promising poets should abandon their passion. Not yet, anyway.
12.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. The process of the experiment. B. The principle of the experiment.
C. The subject of the experiment. D. The result of the experiment.
13.Why does the author mention “wine-tasting” in paragraph 5
A. To compare poetry with wine.
B. To show non-experts’ preferences.
C. To prove the research findings.
D. To argue against the team’s explanation.
14.What can be inferred about the non-experts according to the text
A. They showed good aesthetic appreciation skills.
B. They had prior experience in evaluating poetic quality.
C. They rated the poems based on their aesthetic experience.
D. They were expert in distinguishing AI poetry from human poetry.
15.What is the author’s attitude towards the future of human poetry
A. Optimistic. B. Indifferent. C. Critical. D. Doubtful.

Jenny had a talent for music. She joined the campus choir (合唱团) soon after entering high school and enjoyed the after-school activity greatly. Two months later, the choir teacher Miss Music announced there would be a year-end choir concert, the school year s highlight.
To her surprise, Miss Music gave her a challenging solo (独唱). "I ve never done that. I m afraid I can t..." Jenny hesitated. "You have a beautiful voice. Practice hard and you can make it," she encouraged her. Jenny agreed, sparing no effort to practice under her guidance.
During her practice, Jenny often saw Eli, a senior who sang an inspiring song at the freshman opening ceremony that impressed all the attendees, including Jenny. He d led the choir to city awards and now helped guide new members. He gave her breath control tips patiently, stabilizing her singing. Jenny was grateful for that.
The big day came. Jenny spotted Eli in the hall backstage, helping with the routines. Then she noticed a single microphone standing at the front of the stage, lit by a bright spotlight, ready for her solo. She had never sung into a microphone and she forgot to ask Miss Music for advice. "The microphone might not be much of a problem," she thought.
It was her turn to sing. Miss Music motioned for her to go up in front of that microphone. Despite her uncertainty, her solo began smoothly. She felt relieved, singing confidently. Then she got to the last high note. With her lips nearly touching the microphone, the note came bursting out of the loud speakers (音箱), deafeningly loud. Every single person jerked (急拉) backward, jaws dropping.
Shame swept over Jenny. "Never will I sing in front of people again," she thought, rushing out, determined to skip the choir s upcoming performance. She walked down the hallway, tears of sadness welling up in her eyes.

44.【答案】Suddenly, she heard Eli calling out, "Jenny, wait!" Turning back, Jenny met Eli's warm and understanding eyes. He handed her tissues. "My first solo was even worse -I messed up the rhythm and made a fool of myself. But courage means moving forward despite errors," he continued. "The new microphone is sensitive; your voice is clear and emotional. Don't let one mistake erase your talent and destroy your hard work." His inspiring words brought back her memories of late-night rehearsals. She nodded with gratitude and said firmly, "Thanks. I'll never give up."
Jenny ran back to the backstage. Miss Music hurried over and hugged her, saying, "I'm proud you did quite well. The high note was just a microphone issue. My fault. I forgot to tell you how to use it." She quickly showed Jenny the proper distance between the mouth and the microphone. Jenny responded, "Believe me, Miss Music. I'll do better next time." When it was the whole choir's turn to perform, Jenny joined in. Her clear voice mixed with others' perfectly. The hall erupted in loud applause. Jenny smiled at Eli and Miss Music, realizing setbacks are not walls but stepping stones, and that what matters most is daring to try again.
