Using microwaves to directly heat people in a room would save much of the energy wasted by heating walls and furniture. And although many people think microwaves are dangerous, this technique would be safe, according to Charles R.Buffler of the Microwave Research Centre in Marlborough.Low-power microwaves only go into the skin. For example, they only go into human skin about 0.2 inches deep, and they have no bad effects.
To test this idea,Buffler put himself under microwaves in a special room using a standard500-watt,2,459 MHz magnetron(磁控管).It is found that a person will start to feel warm at about 20 milliwatts per squarecentimeter(mw/cm2).A.satisfactory feeling of warmth happens between35 and 50mw/cm2.Compared with this,a person standing in noonday summer sun feels 85mw/cm2.And a frozen meat pie in your microwave oven gets about 1,000mw/cm2.
In houses of the future, each room could have its own magnetron, says Buffler. When you walk into the living room, for example,a movement detector would turn on the magnetron, filling the room with low-power microwaves.Just like a microwave oven heats up a hamburger, but not the plate it's on,you would feel warm from the microwaves without making the temperature of your coffee table change.
Although it might be some time before people are ready to put whole-body microwave heaters in houses.Buffler says microwaves may attract some farmers.Baby sheep born outdoors in winter, for example, are often killed by cold.Microwaves could warm the baby sheep safely and quickly.
