The Secret Garden (1911) is a children’s novel by the British-American novelist Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849–1924). It is the story of a young girl called Mary Lennox. At first, she is spoiled and selfish, because her rich parents ignore her and leave her to be raised by nannies. When she moves to a house called Misselthwaite Manor, the natural world around her starts to change her. She becomes kinder and healthier after exploring the gardens. She also meets a young boy called Dickon. He loves nature and animals and knows how to look after them. The animals trust him as he has a deep connection to the natural world. Mary and Dickon also help Colin, a sick and angry boy. However, he is not ill, just badly treated. Through their friendship and spending time in the garden, Mary and Dickon help Colin grow stronger and more confident. The book shows that friendship and time in nature are important in having a healthy, happy life.
