It's common for folks not to know anything about the people who deliver their mail, but that certainly doesn't apply to these residents in Durango, Colorado. Their mail carrier, Seana Green, makes it a point to go out of her way and chat with folks whenever possible. Although she's had this job for 15 years, she didn't start the route where Marilyn Schmidt lives until about four or five years ago.
Marilyn, who recently turned 90-year-old, is just one of the many people that Seana has befriended over the years. The two of them love to chat just about every other day. This is made easier by the fact that Seana will park her vehicle, get out, and deliver mail on foot.
Seana walks through the neighborhood, and she does more than just deliver the mail. “I think of them as family,” Seana said. “A lot of them. I really do.” There is an appreciation between the mail lady and residents. That's why, when she hadn't seen Marilyn in quite some time, she grew concerned.
“I didn't see her on Thursday, and I didn't see her on Friday,” Seana recalled. “And when I showed up on Saturday and she wasn't on the porch (门廊) and the mail was like, just hanging out of her box. and I shouted through the screen door.”
At first, Seana couldn't hear anything coming from inside the home. Soon enough though. The quiet sound of Marilyn calling out for help became clear. Seana said that her voice sounded weak almost “like a kitten meowing (喵喵叫)”.

My friend Avery and I tried out for Alice in Wonderland several weeks ago. Avery really hoped she could get picked to be Alice. I said, “You’d make a great Alice! I don’t care what part I get as long as I’m in it.” Then she asked, “So you’d be happy to have a small part like the Dormouse ” I replied, “Exactly!”
A few days later, Avery and I raced over to the theatre office, where the director had posted the cast list.
“Wow!” said Avery. “You got the part of Alice and I got the part of the March Hare.”
“That can’t be right,” I said. “There must be some mistake!”
But I was really given the part of Alice. The reason why I’d done well during the audition (试镜) was that I was not nervous at all, because I had never thought I could get the major role.
I asked her if she wanted to practise our lines after school. Avery responded, “You mean practise your lines No, thanks. I’m busy this week.” “OK. How about someday next week ” I asked. “Sorry,” she whispered, “I’m sure I’m busy forever.”
That night at dinner, after my parents congratulated me on getting the lead role, they asked how I felt about it.
“Well, I’m confused,” I said. “Avery was so upset that I was picked to be Alice. She threw away our friendship.”
“Arizona, don’t you think this might be an opportunity for you to be an extra-good friend ” said my dad. “Sometimes when our friends do well, we feel envious (嫉妒的) and don’t know how to act. Try giving her a little time and understanding. I guess she’ll come around before long.”

The Right Thing to Do
Fauna had always dreamed of keeping a pet. Time and again, she asked her parents, promising to walk, feed, and look after it. Each time, though, they gave the same gentle response — “We’ll see.”
One afternoon, on her way home, Fauna saw a little dog wandering near the park. Its fur (毛) was messy, and it looked lost. Feeling curious and hopeful, Fauna bent down and called to it. The dog quickly ran over, wagging (摇) its tail and gently pressing its nose into her hand, like they had known each other forever.
She looked around, but no one seemed to be searching for the dog. Feeling pity for the lost dog, Fauna decided to take it home. As they walked side by side, her heart swelled with joy. At the front door, Fauna’s mother greeted her with a warm smile. Although she found the dog adorable, she gently reminded Fauna that they needed to try and find its owner. If the dog was lost, someone must be missing it. Fauna reluctantly (不情愿地) agreed, though part of her wished no one would come forward to claim the little dog.
Over the next few days, Fauna and the dog, whom she named Buddy, grew inseparable. She fed him, played with him, and let him sleep curled up at the foot of her bed. Every day, it became harder to imagine lying without him. Buddy seemed happy too, wagging his tail whenever she came home from school. But Fauna knew deep down that she had to do the right thing. She and her parents posted flyers around town, hoping to find Buddy’s owner.
Just a few days later, the phone rang. Fauna’s heart sank as her father answered. From the conversation, it was clear that the caller was Buddy’s owner. He described Buddy perfectly. Fauna knew Buddy would soon be leaving her. Her father arranged for the owner to come by and pick Buddy up.

After Walter Bergen’s wife died, he was thrown into deep sorrow and loneliness. He paid no attention to anything. His house fell into disrepair, with dust gathering everywhere and dirty dishes piling up in the sink. He gave up cooking and survived on TV dinners and toast. His clothes went unwashed, and he neglected his personal care, with a shaggy beard and messy hair.
His daughter, Melanie, was extremely worried. She drove to his house and pleaded, “Dad! This isn’t right. You can’t stay e live with us.” But Walter shot back angrily, “I don’t want to live in your house. I’m fine. Just leave me alone!” Melanie left, her heart heavy with concern.
A few weeks later, Walter walked to the supermarket to buy his usual TV dinners and bread. As he crossed the road, his mind elsewhere, he didn’t look either way. A car hit him, and an ambulance rushed him to the hospital. At the hospital, Melanie exclaimed, “Dad! You’re not living alone anymore. You’re coming to our house.” Walter, weak and defeated, finally agreed.
At Melanie’s house, her husband Roger wasn’t pleased. “Your father is dirty and always in a bad mood. Why is he living with us ” he complained. Melanie firmly replied, “He’s my father. He’s old and heartbroken. He needs to stay.” Roger sighed and said, “I understand.”
Rosa, Melanie and Roger’s daughter, was nine years old. One evening during dinner Melanie announced, “Tomorrow, Rosa’s school has Grandparent’s Day.” Walter, curious, asked, “What’s Grandparent’s Day ” Melanie explained, “The children’s grandparents visit the school, watch the kids’ activities, and play games with them. It’s really fun.” Walter declared, “I’m Rosa’s grandfather. I’ll go.” Upon hearing this, Rosa jumped up, ran to her room and locked herself in. Later that night, as Walter was about to go to bed and walked past Rosa’s room, he heard her sobbing. Then followed Roger’s voice, “Rosa, stop crying, Grandpa is just going through a tough time.”

It was summer. My dad finally decided to take me on a special trip to Inner Mongolia that day, which made me excited.
We took a plane to Hohhot, the provincial capital of Inner Mongolia. The moment we got off the plane in the late afternoon, we saw Uncle Zhang, a farmer whose house we had booked, welcoming us over there. He picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm.
His wife, Aunt Liu cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his family. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the birds singing in the grasslands. Very early in the morning, Uncle Zhang woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, my dad began to ride horses with Uncle Zhang.
In the afternoon, Uncle Zhang wondered if I would take a horse ride. I said I would if my dad accompanied me. So, my dad and I got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the distance. Soon after, Uncle Zhang’s farm was out of sight behind.
After a long period, we stopped our horses, and began to enjoy the beautiful green grassland ahead. The cool wind was slightly blowing our face. Once in a while we could still hear some birds sing in the woods nearby. It was so peaceful and quiet. I had never been so relaxed before.

The annual Halloween arrived, during which kids dressed in traditional clothes went to neighbors’ houses to ask for candy.
Allison lived in a small town. That day after dinner, Allison put on her dress her father had just bought for her. The dress was cheap and second-hand because her family was poor. But Allison still thanked her dad and said, “Everyone will love my dress!” Then, she left for neighbors’ houses to ask for candy.
On the way, she came across Anna and her friends and wanted to join them. “No! Look at your dress! It’s ugly!” Anna said. Her friends also laughed. “Look at our dresses, especially mine! It’s new and beautiful,” Anna added. Her friends nodded, and in some way they were right. Anna’s dress was shiny and looked expensive. She always had the best clothes because her parents were rich.
Allison was shocked and sad. The kids not only disliked her dress but made fun of it. “You can’t come with us!” Anna stressed. “We would never hang out with you!” The other kids agreed and laughed. They all left to start collecting candy for the night while Allison was left alone, embarrassed in the middle of the street.
Anyway, she knew all the neighbors. She often helped around carrying their groceries and helping them with their gardens. People around there knew her. She didn’t need to hangout with Anna or her friends. “I’ll go just alone,” the little girl said to herself and started walking.
She as well as Anna and her friends walked in the same direction: towards their first neighbor Mrs Vaughan’s house. But Allison walked behind and kept her distance from them. And she stopped when Anna and her friends were near Mrs Vaughan’s house.
Just then, Mrs Vaughan looked out of her window. She noticed that Allison was being excluded by Anna and her friends. She knew it was probably because of Allison’s poor dress. She immediately felt pity for Allison, who often helped her and other neighbors. She decided to give Allison much more candy as a reward and teach Anna and her friends a lesson.

As the golden sun was sailing higher and higher in the east, casting its warm glow over the town, Emily, a keen photographer, started a solo journey to the famed Old Pine Scenic Area, well known for its centuries-old pine forests and winding paths. She anticipated a day filled with peaceful beauty and the opportunity to touch nature in its purest form.
Upon arrival, Emily was charmed by the quietness and splendidness of the overgrown pines that towered above, their branches whispering tales of old in the gentle morning breeze. With her camera in hand, she ventured deeper into the heart of the forest, each step further immersing her in the lively picture of greens and earthy browns.
The paths of Old Pine were many, weaving through the forest like threads of a vast, tangled (缠结的) web. Initially, Emily followed the marked trails, snapping photos of dew-kissed (带着露珠的) spider webs and squirrels dashing through the underbrush. However, as the morning turned into afternoon, she decided to stray from the beaten path to explore a more hidden area, rumored to house the eldest and most majestic pine in the reserve.
The deeper she wandered, the quieter the forest grew, except for the occasional rustle of leaves and distant birds. Focused intently on her photography, Emily scarcely noticed the shifting shadows and the subtle change in the forest. She then realized it was getting late but she had not yet found the eldest pine. And she had not only strayed off the path but was now thoroughly lost.
Panic fluttered in her chest. She attempted to backtrack, hoping to find familiar landmarks, but the forest seemed to have rearranged itself behind her. The trees stood pitiless, their trunks like silent guards that offered no guidance. With her phone’s signal frustratingly absent in the thick forest, Emily felt a surge of helplessness.

For those students in city, the road to school might mean the convenience of their dad’s cars, where the heater keeps them comfortable and the radio plays music. But for Tom, who lived in a remote village, it meant a dangerous journey through strong winds and piles of snow.
It was a cold morning. The snow blanketed every rooftop and weighed on the branches of big trees. Tom woke up early, with the howling wind outside his small cabin (小木屋). He put on lots of clothes, including his thickest wool socks and warmest coat. As he was about to go, there was a knock on the door. It’s his classmate Peter in the same village. “Hey, Tom,” Peter said. “Do you think we should go to school today ” “I know it’s tough,” Tom replied, looking at the heavy snow outside, “but missing school means we’ll fall behind.” Finally, they decided to go to school.
The snow had been falling for days, building up on the narrow path that led to school. Tom and Peter stepped out into the snowstorm, with boots sinking deep into the snow. Tom used his arms to push the snow away, and his heart was pounding as he worked hard. He fell down a few times, but each time he got up again. “I must go to school!” Tom said firmly. Thinking about the other kids in the village who insisted on going to school, he knew they were facing the same challenge. But they were all trying to learn and grow.
The wind had blown snow all over the path, making it hard to see where they were going. Not far away, Tom heard someone crying from behind a tree. “Peter, do you hear that ” Tom asked in a puzzled tone. “Let’s go and have a look.” Peter answered.

Lily was a bright and energetic girl with a heart full of dreams. She lived in a small and comfortable town where everyone knew each other. One sunny morning, Lily’s teacher announced a school talent show. The news excited Lily immediately, as she had always loved singing and dreamed of performing on stage.
Without hesitation, Lily signed up for the show. She chose her favourite song and started practising right away. Every day after school, she would go to the park and sing her heart out, imagining the big stage and the cheering audience. However, as the days passed, Lily faced a big problem. She found it difficult to reach some of the high notes in the song. No matter how hard she tried, her voice just wouldn’t cooperate.
Lily started to feel discouraged. She thought about giving up and withdrawing from the talent show. But deep inside, she knew that giving up was not an option. She remembered the words her father always told her, “When life gives you challenges, face them with courage and never give up.”
Determined to overcome the obstacle, Lily decided to ask for help. She went to her music teacher, Mrs. Brown, and explained her problem. Mrs. Brown was very kind and patient. She listened to Lily sing and then gave her some useful tips on how to control her voice and reach the high notes. She also encouraged Lily to practise regularly and believe in herself.
With Mrs. Brown’s guidance, Lily practised even harder. She spent hours every day working on those difficult notes. Sometimes she felt tired and depressed, but she always reminded herself of her dream. Finally, the day of the talent show arrived. Lily was nervous but excited. As she stepped onto the stage and saw the audience looking at her expectantly, her heart raced. But as soon as the music started, she took a deep breath and began to sing.

Over the next week, I did my best to give Avery some space. Then one day, I approached her. “I know you didn’t exactly love the idea of being the March Hare, but you’re such a talented actress, and the way you say your lines is great.” “Thanks,” said Avery happily, with a big smile on her face. “Well,” I said, “I’m still struggling with a few things about my character. I’d love your help if you have any free time this week.” She smiled. “I might be free on Thursday.” And we practised carefully and passionately on Thursday.
Our play ended up going great. We had so much fun, and the audience loved the perfect show. They broke into loud applause. And even though things were rough for a little while with Avery and me, they’re better than ever now! She even apologized for the way she acted at first. And I’ve learned an important lesson from this experience. Give your teammate a little time and understanding, and he or she just might come around before too long.

The man arrived at last. Wagging his cute tail and licking all over him, Buddy seemed so pleased that he jumped up and ran around the man. The man, who introduced himself as Buddy’s owner, trembled with excitement, tears welling up in his eyes as he hugged Buddy tightly. “Thank you so much for taking care of him,” he said, turning to Fauna’s parents with genuine gratitude. Frustrated yet relieved, Fauna’s parents felt a gigantic weight off their shoulders.
They were on the point of leaving when Fauna just came back from school. Apparently, Fauna was unprepared to walk into this intense handover scenario — her very beloved puppy in the arms of a strange man. Seeming to get a good read on the delicate situation, Fauna’s parents explained the ins and outs. Waves of shock to despair to pity, and lastly relief took turns to show up on Fauna’s face. “I’m glad he can get back to his real family again. But can I visit Buddy from time to time ” Fauna asked. Moved to tears again, the man nodded yes. Since then, the two families have become great friends, all being the fruit of a tough but honest decision.

Frightened as I was, I tried to keep my balance to prevent me from falling off. Fortunately, minutes later, the horse stopped before a river, out of breath, and so did I. At that moment, my dad also came up. Seeing I was OK, he was quite relieved. But it was clear that we got lost.
We had no idea where we were and it got dark. We didn’t know where the farm house was. What we could do was to go back along the previous track slowly. But it was really difficult for us in such a dark situation. Just as we were at the point of desperation, we heard a faint voice from the distance. “It must be Uncle Zhang,” I said. So we cried back with excitement. Finally, Uncle Zhang safely brought us back home. What an amazing ride!

When Allison walked away, Mrs Vaughan divided the rest of the candy among Anna and her friends, who were a little angry and confused.

Emily remembered reading about the importance of staying calm when lost. She found a relatively clear spot and decided to wait, hoping that a ranger who takes care of forest or another hiker might pass by. To keep calm, she resumed taking photos, capturing the stunning beauty of the fog-wrapped forest, each shot a stark contrast to the morning’s vibrant frames. As hours passed, the sound of footsteps crunching on dry leaves alerted Emily to the presence of another. A wave of relief washed over her as an elderly man emerged from the mist, his face creased with a kind smile beneath a wide-brimmed hat. “I thought I might find someone out here,” he said in a gentle voice, noticing Emily’s camera. “You must be here for Old Pine’s eldest.”
Nodding eagerly, Emily explained her situation to the local man. The man, who introduced himself as a local historian and knew the forest like the back of his hand. With a comforting assurance, he offered to lead her back to the main trail and then to the ancient pine she had sought. As they walked, the old man shared stories of the forest’s history and its significance to the local community. The forest, he explained, was not just a collection of trees but a living memory of the town’s heritage. Finally, they arrived at the grand old pine. Its vast trunk and overgrown branches were indeed a sight to behold, majestic and enduring. Emily captured the tree in her lens, a permanent reminder of her adventure and the lessons learned. She thanked the old man earnestly, her heart full of gratitude for the unexpected friendship and the invaluable lesson in humility and respect for nature.

As they got closer, they spotted that it was their classmate, Sarah. She huddled against a tree, struggling to keep warm, obviously injuring her ankle. Without hesitation, Tom helped her up cautiously. But the ground was so slippery that he stumbled and nearly fell to the ground. Tom and Peter took turns to carry Sarah on their backs. Overwhelmed with heartfelt gratitude, she couldn’t utter a word. Exhausted as they were, they didn’t stop. The snow grew heavier, but with friends by their sides, all of them felt something warm inside.
After a long journey, they finally arrived at the school gate. The snow glistened in the light as they walked into the warm classroom, where their classmates and teacher were waiting for them anxiously. The teacher gave them a thumbs up and Sarah said, “I couldn’t thank you enough.” Touched deeply, the class burst into thunderous applause with smiles and cheers. The snowflakes were still swirling but the cozy atmosphere filled the classroom. It suddenly dawned on Tom that despite all the challenges, a small act of kindness is like a warm breeze blowing into everyone’s heart, which melted the ice and made a difference.

Lily poured her heart and soul into the song. Standing on the stage, her eyes closed, she swung gently with the music. Her voice resounded powerfully and obviously, hitting every note perfectly, especially those high notes that once troubled her. Veins slightly bulged on her neck as she reached for the climax part, and her hands took fast hold on the microphone. The audience sat out of their mind, their eyes fixed on her. When she finished, the whole auditorium erupted into thunderous applause. Lily’s face lit up, and she felt a sense of pride and achievement wash over her, a huge smile spreading across her cheeks.
After the show, Lily’s friends and teachers crowded around her. Her friends, eyes wide with admiration, said, “Lily, that was incredible! Every move was so accurate and full of emotion.” Teachers nodded in agreement, adding, “Your devotion really shone through. The countless hours of practice were evident.” Lily stood there, a shy smile on her face. Glancing around at their supportive faces, she truly understood that through her own hard work, never-giving-up spirit and the encouragement she’d received, she was capable of reaching any goal. This performance wasn’t just an event; it was a life-changing lesson she’d treasure forever.
