China’s Total and Elderly Population
Over these decades, China’s demographic profile has changed dramatically, with the elderly share growing rapidly due to low birth rates and increasing life expectancy. By 2030, the proportion of older adults is projected to rise sharply, reflecting deepening population ageing, which presents significant social and economic challenges.
The following chart illustrates the trends in China’s total population and the size of its elderly population (aged 65 and over) from 1980 to 2030 (projected).
China’s total population is estimated to decline slightly by 2030 while the share of older adults continues rising. By 2030, the senior population is expected to make up around one-fifth or more of the total, which highlights accelerated ageing and increasing demographic pressure on social systems.
What percentage of the total population will the senior population account for

Growing up in a small town in Spain, Carlos Martínez always dreamed of becoming a pilot. As a child, he would look up whenever a plane passed overhead, imagining what it would feel like to sit in the cockpit and guide it through the clouds. However, at the age of 16, he was diagnosed with a serious heart condition, and he had to give up competitive sports and many physical activities. For a while, he believed that he was supposed to abandon his dream.
Despite the setback, Carlos Martínez tried his best to reignite his dream. During his medical recovery, he developed an interest in aviation theory and flight simulation. He spent hours studying aircraft systems and meteorology (气象学). “If I couldn’t fly yet,” he said, “I could at least learn everything about flying.” Those long months at home were not easy. There were days when he felt frustrated watching his friends move forward with their own lives while he seemed to be standing still. But Carlos realized that progress never seemed to be dramatic. His family and teachers also encouraged him much, reminding him that a dream can change shape instead of disappearing. It was the support that helped him stay focused and gave him the courage for the day when he might be able to fly one day.
After several surgeries and years of treatment, his condition finally stabilized. With his doctors’ approval, he applied for a private pilot training program. The training was extremely demanding, both physically and mentally, and yet Carlos was so persevering that he passed strict medical examinations before every stage of his instruction. Eventually, he earned his pilot’s license.
Today, he works as a flight instructor, helping young students take their first steps into the sky. Carlos often shares the struggles he went through and that a challenge is not an obstacle but redirection. His journey proves that determination, combined with patience, can turn even the most uncertain future into a hopeful one.

Li Dazhao, also known as Li Shouchang, was one of the principal founders of the Chinese Communist Party and a pioneer who spread Marxism (马克思主义) in China. As an outstanding Marxist theorist and revolutionary, he devoted his entire short life to the cause of national liberation and social transformation.
Born in Laoting County, Hebei Province, he lost both of his parents at a young age and was raised by his grandfather. Showing strong determination and intellectual promise, he, in 1907, was admitted to the Beiyang College of Law and Politics in Tianjin, where he received systematic training in modern political and legal thought.
In 1913, Li traveled to Japan to continue his studies at Waseda University in Tokyo, and majored in political science. During this period, China faced severe national crises. Then Li drafted (起草) the influential pamphlet A Warning to the Elders of the Nation, calling on the Chinese people to resist foreign aggression. This marked his emergence as a passionate patriot and public intellectual.
In 1920, Li cooperated closely with Chen Duxiu in preparing for the establishment of the Communist Party of China. Since the preparation was not finished until the year of 1921, Li took responsibility for his work in northern China, organized and supported workers’ movement, and promoted revolutionary education. Meanwhile, he made important efforts to build cooperation between the Communist Party and the Nationalist Party (国民党) led by Sun Yat-sen. Through innumerable dialogues and negotiations, Li contributed significantly to the formation of the first United Front whose aim was to unite various revolutionary forces against warlordism (军阀主义) and imperialism.
However, in April 1927, the warlord Zhang Zuolin ordered the arrest of Li Dazhao in Beijing. On April 6, Li was imprisoned, during which he endured severe torture and refused to betray Party secrets. On April 28, 1927, Li Dazhao was executed (处决) at the age of thirty-eight.
Li’s life was brief yet filled with courage, scholarship, and dedication. He combined intellectual strength with moral integrity, and theory with action. In spite of this short life, his influence on modern Chinese history still remains pivotal.
As a pioneer of Chinese Communism and a key founder of the Chinese Communist Party, he helped shape the course of modern Chinese history.
What was Li Dazhao’s intention to draft the pamphlet in 1913
A. To make progress in his study of Waseda University.
B. To become famous as a patriotic writer in China.
C. To promote Marxism prevailing in China.
D. To raise the awareness of the Chinese people to resist invasion.
What does the underlined word “pivotal” mean in Paragraph 6
A. crucial. B. obvious. C. enthusiastic. D. generous.
What can be inferred about Li Dazhao from his imprisonment according to the passage
A. He valued personal safety over political commitment.
B. He did not prepare for political struggle well.
C. He remained loyal to his beliefs under pressure.
D. He was finally rescued by his fellow revolutionaries.
What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Li Dazhao: A Leading Educator of Marxism in China

You may hear that doctors often remind patients to “stay hydrated (水分充足)”. However, it is relatively less common for doctors to simply ask patients to “drink more water”.
Partly, the answer lies in electrolytes. Human beings cannot survive on water alone. Along with fluids, the body requires a proper balance of electrically charged minerals – known as electrolytes – to function normally. These substances regulate nerve (神经) signals, support muscle contraction, and maintain the balance of fluids inside and outside cells. Without them, even basic bodily processes begin to fail.
Among the most common electrolytes is sodium (钠), which is found in ordinary table salt. Because salt is widely available and inexpensive, a mild salt solution has long been considered to be a practical and cost-saving way to restore electrolyte balance. When people sweat heavily, suffer from diarrhea, or experience prolonged physical exertion, they lose not only water but also sodium and other minerals. In such situations, drinking a small amount of lightly salted water can assist the body in retaining fluid and stabilizing circulation. Sodium encourages water absorption in the intestines (肠道) and plays an important role in preventing dizziness, fatigue, and muscle cramps (痉挛).
Nevertheless, the concentration of the salt solution is crucial. The human body maintains a delicate concentration of electrolytes in the bloodstream. If the salt concentration in a drink becomes too high, the effect can be the opposite of what is intended. Instead of promoting hydration, excessive salt increases the osmotic pressure in the digestive system, leading to dehydration rather than hydration. Water is then drawn out of body tissues to dilute the salt, which may worsen dehydration rather than relieve it. In extreme cases, overly concentrated salt solutions can irritate the stomach, raise blood pressure, and stress the kidneys.
This principle perfectly explains why medical rehydration solutions are carefully measured. They contain not only sodium but also glucose (葡萄糖) and other electrolytes in precise proportions. The goal is not to flood the body with salt, but to restore electrolyte equilibrium. The same reasoning applies to daily life. While lightly salted water may assist recovery after heavy sweating, routinely drinking highly concentrated salt water is neither necessary nor advisable.
In short, electrolytes are essential to human survival, and sodium plays a central role in maintaining fluid balance. Yet more is not always better. True hydration depends not merely on quantity, but on proportion. Understanding this distinction helps explain why moderation, rather than excess, is the wiser choice when it comes to salt and water. Therefore, if you want to stay hydrated, you should drink lightly salted water in moderate amounts.
How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph
A. By quoting an old saying. B. By defining a concept.
C. By telling a story. D. By making a comparison.
Which of the following statements is correct according to the passage
A. If you want to stay hydrated, you should drink more water.
B. It is recommended that one drink lightly salted water when having diarrhea.
C. Dehydration is mainly caused by excessive sweating.
D. Sodium is the most important mineral in the human body.
What determines whether salted water can help people stay hydrated
A. The volume of salted water B. The temperature of salted water
C. The frequency of drinking salted water D. The concentration of salted water
What does the author try to illustrate by presenting the last paragraph
A. To prove that sodium consists of human body’s electrolytes.
B. To explain how salted water with high concentration affects the human body.
C. To present suggestions for people who want to keep themselves hydrated.
D. To show that drinking salted water regularly is necessary for appropriate hydration.

After more than a decade of strong policy support, China’s New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market may now be facing a true test of competitiveness.
The first month after the latest policy adjustment provides an early signal. Since January 1, 2026, the government reduced the long-standing purchase tax exemption (豁免) to a 50 percent reduction, which means that the maximum benefit per vehicle was lowered from 30,000 yuan to 15,000 yuan. 36.
37. Retail sales dropped to around 800,000 units, whereas the market penetration rate (市场渗透率) fell from 60 percent to about 45 percent. This slowdown indicates that the policy support continues to play an important role, especially in price-sensitive, mass-market segments.
The policy adjustment has also increased differences among manufacturers (生产商). Companies with more diversified product lines and stronger mid- to high-end models were better able to manage the impact. 38. To stabilize sales, many manufacturers introduced price reductions.
As government support gradually fades out, the focus of competition is shifting. 39. ________ Instead, long-term success will depend on product quality, clear brand positioning, cost control, and technological innovation. 40.
However, the numbers reveal that NEV sales declined more sharply than expected.
This change marks the end of an era that helped China become the largest NEV market.
In contrast, brands that depend heavily on lower-priced vehicles experienced greater pressure.
Globally, January NEV sales reached about 1.2 million units, but China’s momentum appeared comparatively subdued.
These factors will determine which companies can remain competitive in a more mature and market-driven industry.
The later arrival of the Lunar New Year likely further delayed purchasing decisions of NEV.
Car manufacturers can no longer rely mainly on policy incentives to expand sales.

The program required 49 and commitment, especially during exam periods when I had responsibilities of my own. There were evenings when exhaustion tempted me to 50 a session. When Jason turned sixteen, everything seemed to be tougher than before. School used to be simple, and he usually finished his homework, played basketball with his friends, and laughed easily. But during his second year of high school, something changed. He could not explain it, yet he felt a quiet sadness that followed him everywhere. His grades slowly dropped. He stared at his textbooks for hours, but could not concentrate. At night, he lay awake, thinking about small mistakes he had made during the day: a careless answer in class, a joke that no one laughed at… These moments grew larger in his mind, until he began to believe that he was simply not good enough.
At home, the silence around him felt even louder. During dinner, he pushed food around his plate and avoided eye contact. His parents talked about work and daily news, but their voices appeared far away. He wanted to speak, to explain the pressure he felt, yet the words stayed locked inside him. He was afraid they would not understand, or worse, that they would think he was weak. So when his mother gently asked, “Is everything alright ” he nodded and said, “I’m just tired.”

One possible version:
Last Friday, a special activity with the theme of “Reading and Sharing” was successfully held in our school. The activity aimed to encourage students to develop reading habits and share ideas with others.
During the activity, many students introduced their favorite books. Some students read wonderful passages aloud, while others shared their thoughts and feelings after reading. The atmosphere was lively and warm, and everyone was interested in reading the books introduced by other students.
Not only did we learn more about different books in this activity but also improved our ability to express ourselves. It made us realize that reading can widen our horizons and bring us great pleasure. I hope more activities will be held in the future in our school.
第二节 (满分25分)
Before long, his tiredness and sadness were noticed by other people around him, including his coach and friends. However, Jason continued to conceal his emotions from those around him. In class, he grew increasingly withdrawn and seldom participated in discussions. During basketball practice, his movements lacked energy, and he frequently made uncharacteristic mistakes. Even when his friends inquired about his well-being, he merely forced a faint smile and insisted that everything was fine. Deep down, he felt utterly lost and was unable to find a way out of the overwhelming gloom. One afternoon, after basketball practice, his coach stopped him. “You don’t seem like yourself lately,” he said. “Everyone has tough seasons. That does not mean you’ve failed.”
Those words really inspired Jason. As his confidence started to return, he regarded challenges as opportunities instead of difficulties. He began to set attainable goals and strive for gradual improvement. Rather than dwelling on his mistakes, he learned to treat himself with greater patience and understanding. In time, he also mustered the courage to open up to his parents and friends about his struggles. With their support and encouragement, Jason gradually regained his sense of joy and learned to face life with renewed hope and resilience.
