Lightning is very powerful. It can produce a voltage of up to 300 million volts (伏特). And it can heat the air to 30,000°C—five times hotter than the surface of the sun. Lightning may look amazing, but it’s really dangerous.
Summer is a good time to learn about lightning safety since there are more thunderstorms (雷雨). 31 Here are some tips to help you stay safe.
32
Before you plan an outdoor activity like hiking or fishing, always have a safety plan for stormy weather. Know where the safe places are and know how long it will take to get there.
Listen to the weather report.
33 If a thunderstorm is coming, change your plan. It’s better to stay inside.
Get to a safe place.
By the time you hear thunder, you may already be in danger. No place outside is safe when thunderstorms are in the area. Try to go indoors. 34 A bus or car is also safe. Stay away from trees and metal (金属) things.
Wait for the thunderstorm to pass.
Lightning can still happen after the thunderstorm seems to be over. 35
Thanks to safety work, deaths from lightning in the US have dropped from nearly 100 a year to under 20. Learning about lightning safety can help keep you safe!

An Unforgettable Natural Disaster Experience
Last year, a powerful earthquake suddenly struck our small town without warning. I was reading books quietly in my room when the ground started shaking violently. Books fell off shelves and furniture shook heavily. I could even hear people screaming nervously outside. Immediately, I remembered the safety rules: drop, cover, and hold on. I hid under a strong table and carefully protected my head. After the shaking stopped, I helped my neighbors check for injuries and shared water supplies with them. This experience taught me that staying calm and acting quickly are crucial in emergencies. Now, I always keep an emergency bag ready and practice safety drills regularly. Natural disasters are unpredictable, but being well prepared can make a big difference to our safety.
