In the past, printing was a hard job. People carved (刻) words into lead cubes (铅块). Then, they put the cubes in order for printing. But it was slow and wasteful. The lead was bad for their health. A scientist named Wang Xuan helped solve this problem. He made it possible to use computers to print Chinese words.
Wang Xuan was an expert (专家) in computers and science. When he first talked about using computers to print, many people didn’t believe him. This is because Chinese words are difficult to type (打字). And Chinese printing industry (印刷业) was far behind other countries’ industries.
But Wang Xuan believed he could make it work. When he decided to do it, he had already been sick for years. But he didn’t rest. He kept working all the time.
He failed many times and his workers were upset. But Wang Xuan never gave up. He told them to try harder. It took him 18 years to make his printing system (系统) work. Today, because of Wang Xuan, printing is easy.

Gifts Giving around the World
Everyone loves gifts! But each country has different customs(习俗).
As a European(欧洲人) living in China, I’ve seen some interesting differences from home. For example, in China, people often give fruits and milk. In Europe, these are usually for hospital visits.
Many Europeans open their gifts right away, but not in places like Germany(德国). It’s also important to take off the price tag(标签) before giving the gift.
What will you do if you don’t like your gift In Spain(西班牙), you still need to say you love the gift so you don’t hurt the other person’s feelings. But if they remember to leave the receipt(收据) inside the gift, you can just change it for something else.
