For thousands of years, people have used clay to make useful and beautiful objects. Ancient clay products help us understand past cultures more clearly than other things because clay lasts longer than other materials.
One of the earliest pottery-making(陶器制作) stories comes from China. Long ago, Chinese makers might have made grass baskets stronger by coating them with clay. When these clay-covered baskets accidentally fell into fire, the grass burned away, leaving strong pots behind. Later,Chinese artists created something special—— porcelain (瓷器). When Chinese porcelain reached Europe, people loved it but weren't able to copy it until 1710. Today, China remains famous for its wonderful porcelain.
A clay object is usually first shaped, then painted, and baked(烧制) at high temperatures to make it hard and strong. When the firing is completed, workers must carefully remove the pottery from the kiln(窑)and let it cool slowly. If it cools too quickly, it could break.
Over the years, clay objects have served many purposes. One of the most common uses of pottery is for cooking and storing food. And fired clay has also been used to make bricks for building houses. Today, modern factories use special heat-resistant ceramics(耐热陶瓷) instead of metal in machines.
Some people think pottery isn't“real art” because the objects created are usually useful things. At the same time, however, many of these useful clay works are very valuable. Some are even kept in museums. In Iran, taking ancient pottery out of the country can lead to punishments. This shows how much value cultures place on clay creations.
