Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a wonderful place to visit. Every year, over one million people visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
There are two of the world’s most amazing volcanoes (火山) in it. One is among the most active volcanoes on the earth, the other is one of the biggest mountains on the earth. Both of them are active volcanoes. Every day, on the island of Hawaii, lava (熔岩) comes out slowly from a volcano on the edge (边缘) of the ocean. When the lava cools, it turns into rock and makes this island a little bigger. Visitors can see the land change before their eyes.
There are many interesting things to do in the park. It has lava tubes (隧道) that go to the sea. They are so big that visitors can walk through them. You can drive along a volcano or walk more than 150 miles (241 km) of trails (路径). Biking along the volcano’s paths and camping in the rainforest are also good choices.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is home to wildlife. There are hundreds of protected animals, such as turtles, bats, insects, and many kinds of birds. The park also has many protected plants and trees. Almost all of its plants are found only in Hawaii. Many plants have lived in and around the volcanoes for years.

Three years ago, Mark Taylor, a 45-year-old father, made a brave and confident decision that would change his family’s life forever. He decided to show his 14-year-old daughter, Lily, the beauty of movement while she still could. He started a great journey across China with Lily. Lily had been told that she had juvenile arthritis (幼年特发性关节炎), a condition that perhaps made her gradually lose her ability to walk. Doctors wanted she might need a wheelchair in the end, but Mark refused to let fear destroy their lives. “I wanted her to see the world through her own eyes, free from any limitations (局限).” he later explained.
One year later, the father and the daughter began their 3,000-mile hiking, from the large Gobi Desert to the thick tropical forests of Yunnan. Over eight months, they camped under starry skies, joined Sichuan farmers in harvesting golden rice fields, and learned the ancient art of pottery-making from the Miao ethnic (民族) villagers. Lily documented everything in her diary, some lines like, “My legs ache, but my heart is full. ” They had many challenges — sandstorms blocked their path, and rainstorms tested their beliefs. Yet Mark’s greatest struggle was reshaping (重塑) Lily’s opinion towards her life. “Pain doesn’t define (给……定义) you,” he reminded her daily. “Your courage does.”
By the trip’s end, what she had got was very pleasing. She had gained unexpected strength. Not only could she hike 20 miles a day — more than her doctors’ expectations — but her fears of disability had turned into courage. Through deserts, villages, and storms, they proved that the world is not just seen with eyes but felt with every courageous step. Their story, made in the 2025 documentary Forward, became a testament (证明) to human spirit. “I used to fear becoming disabled (残疾的),” she told a reporter in the film. “Now I know I’ll always find ways to explore, __▲__ .”

Picture this: After studying all day, you are tired and craving (渴望) a cup of milk tea. In the past, that little voice in your head might say: “Stop! That’s too many calories (卡路里)!” But today, young people in China smile and tell themselves: “Ai ni lao ji! Let’s go get one!”
The phrase “ai ni lao ji” means “love you, dear old me.” It has spread on Chinese social media since the end of last year. The idea is simple: Treat yourself like your best friend. A best friend always cares about you and stands up for your needs. When you feel tired, it is okay to rest. Think of yourself like a phone: After a long day, you need to recharge. You can go shopping, spend time on a hobby, or just do nothing and relax.
This change in mindset shows a break with tradition. Older generations (一代人) often valued hard work more than personal feelings. Many believed that doing nothing was lazy and that putting yourself first was selfish. But young people today believe self-care is not something to be ashamed (羞耻) of. The question guiding their choices has changed from “Is this necessary ” to “Does it make me happy ”
But remember: Taking care of yourself does not mean doing whatever you want. If you use “ai ni lao ji” as an excuse to rest all the time, it will lose its meaning. True “ai ni lao ji” means knowing when to take a break and when to take responsibility (责任) .
So yes, rest when you are tired, but move forward when it is time. In the end, loving yourself is not about getting away from life. It is about having the energy to live your life well.
1. The writer would most likely describe “ai ni lao ji” as ____ .
A. a healthy habit about eating well
B. a selfish excuse for getting away from responsibilities
C. a good way to care for yourself when you are tired
D. a meaningless phrase people use on social media for fun
2. What may the underlined word “recharge” mean
A. Relax at home. B. Spend money on yourself.
C. Get back your energy. D. Work until you don’t have energy.
3. According to the article, young people think “ai ni lao ji” makes them ____ .
A. happy B. lazy C. selfish D. ashamed
4. Tom hasn’t done his homework for a week. He says, “I’m just practising ‘ai ni lao ji’ — I need to rest.” What may the writer say to him
A. “You’re right. Rest is important.”
B. “Maybe some milk tea will help.”
C. “You’ve misunderstood, ‘Ai ni lao ji’ means balancing rest with responsibility, not avoiding it.”
D. “You should always do as much homework as you can and rest as little as you can.”
D
The mystery (神秘的事) began as the twins looked around their new home — an old house with apple trees. What interested the twins most was the attic (阁楼). There they found a dirty old bottle. After cleaning it, a surprising note inside caught their attention.
*By stones where shadows lie, close to where old leaves die.*
*Not far below, under the earth, lies a treasure of secret worth.*
*If you search and do not fear, the past will soon be clear.*
*Near the bed where dragonflies fly, dig by the wettest place nearby.*
“A treasure!” Anna said excitedly.
“And these clues (线索)! Where old leaves die,” Sam read aloud. “It’s near those apple trees.”
“Let’s get a shovel (铲子) and borrow a metal detector (金属探测器) to find the treasure.”
With their parents’ help, Sam used the detector under the apple trees and found an old bottle cap.
They also checked the stone wall but there was only a nail. All their early leads turned out to be wrong.
That night, Anna kept thinking about “bed” in the note. She looked it up in the dictionary and suddenly, an idea clicked.
The next morning, she led everyone into the woods where a stone wall ran by a stream.
“Where’s the bed ” Sam asked.
“Bed also means the bottom of a stream and that’s where dragonflies lay their eggs.” Anna explained, sweeping the detector.
Beeeeee. They dug carefully and found a lunch box.
“Look at all these things.” They pulled out the treasures: a postcard, a music record, a silver half-dollar, and a baseball card.
“It’s a box from the past!” Sam shouted. “Look, 1964 on the baseball card!”
“But who buried (埋) it ”Anna wondered, holding up the postcard. On the back was another note:
*The past is a mystery, the present a race, to find who I am, just find the place.*
*Look where stories and words stay, or behind the doors where secrets hide away.*
Anna laughed. “Here we go again — another mystery to solve!”

It was a warm spring day in 2021. Chen Beier, a reporter and TV presenter from Hong Kong, was on her way to a small village called Atule’er. The small village sits at the top of an 800-metre-high cliff (悬崖). People can only get up to it by climbing a 2-metre ladder (梯子). It is very dangerous.
So, was Chen looking for adventure (冒险) The answer is no. The famous presenter was, instead, making a documentary (纪录片).
In February 2021, China reached an important goal to get rid of poverty (贫困). Many people couldn’t believe this. After all, China has a large number of poor villages. In order to show the truth to people, Chen set out to make No Poverty Land. The trip turned out to be hard. For example, when she was halfway up the ladder, Chen felt so tired that she could hardly go any further. She was also afraid of heights. The villagers advised her to stop, but the woman continued her climb.
This steel ladder, in fact, is only six years old. Before it was built, the villagers had to face even bigger danger and use a rattan (藤条制成的) ladder. The government has also built houses for the villagers at the foot of the mountain. Through No Poverty Land, people can easily see how life in poor areas of China has been improved.
China has changed a lot, but some people just find it hard to believe. Now, Chen has shown us what we can do about that: Don’t just tell people about the great changes; show them when you can.
