Last Saturday, I joined some volunteers from my school to help at a community center. The center provides food, clothes, and other necessities for people in need. We arrived early in the morning and were divided into three groups.
Group 1 went to visit elderly people in their homes. They brought flowers and fruits and spent time talking with them. Many of the elderly people were very happy to see visitors and shared stories about their lives.
Group 2 worked in the center's kitchen. They prepared and served hot meals to families who came to the center. The volunteers there also helped to clean the tables after people finished eating.
Group 3 organized activities for children. They set up games, read books, and helped with homework. The children laughed and played happily, and some even said they wanted to become volunteers when they grew up.
I was in Group 2. At first, I felt a bit nervous because I didn't know what to do. But the other volunteers showed me how to serve food and how to talk to the people who came in. After a while, I felt more comfortable and even made some new friends.

Last Saturday, our community service group decided to do something special. Instead of staying at home playing video games or watching TV, we met at the small, messy park near our neighborhood. Our task was simple: to clean it up and make it beautiful again.
We arrived at 9 a.m. with gloves and big trash bags. At first, the park looked like a big challenge. There was litter everywhere—plastic bottles, food wrappers, and old newspapers under the benches and bushes. Our leader, Mr. Davis, divided us into teams. Some picked up trash, some swept the paths, and others wiped the playground equipment.
The work was harder than we expected. The sun was hot, and some trash was stuck in the mud. But a wonderful thing happened as we worked. People walking by saw us and smiled. Some even stopped to say "thank you." One man brought us cold bottles of water, and a lady gave us some fresh fruits. Their kindness made us feel happy and gave us more energy.
By lunchtime, the park was completely different! The grass was clean, the benches were dry and ready to sit on, and the playground looked bright and safe. We collected over twenty bags of rubbish. We were all tired, but our hearts were full of joy. We realized that even a small group of teenagers could make a big difference in our community.
That day, I learned that volunteering isn't just about hard work. It’s about teamwork, caring for the place we live in, and the warm feeling you get when you help others. I can't wait for our next project!

Many parents like setting(设立) family rules for their kids. When kids break rules, parents will give them some punishments, which aren’t included in rules. In fact, when you tell your kids about a new rule, you should talk with them about the price they should pay for breaking the rule—what the punishment will be.
Punishments you set should be reasonable, without violence or threat (暴力或威胁).For example, if you find your son smoking, you may limit (限制)his social activities for two weeks. You should punish your kids only in ways you have discussed before the rule is broken. A study shows that the most popular punishment is to limit kids’ TV time.
It’s understandable that you’ll be angry when rules are broken. Punishment is a way to express your anger, but it’s not a very good one. Sharing your feelings of anger, disappointment or sadness with your kids can have a better effect on them. Try to do that. When your kids know what they have done has made you ,they will feel guilty (内疚的).When they know their actions influence you greatly, they will obey rules better.
Family rules are made to help your kids behave better. If your rules or ways of punishment make them unhappy or under a lot of pressure, are they helpful?
