Culture is not only for humans beings. It is also very important for wild animals. Animals use tools, live in groups and have their own culture.
Sam Williams works for the Macaw Recovery Network in Costa Rica. He helps to increase the number of macaws (金刚鹦鹉) by taking birds that were born in cages (笼子) and sending them back into the wild.
“In a cage, you can’t train them to know where, when and how to find that food, or about trees with a good home,” Williams told the ecologist (生态学者) and writer Carl Safina. In the wild, the bird’s parents are the ones that teach them this important information.
This type of knowledge is called cultural knowledge. Cultural knowledge can be passed down from the older generation to the newer one. For many animals, cultural knowledge is necessary for life.
Culture helps animals get used to different living environments. For example, some crows have learned to put nuts in the middle of the road for cars to drive over. And in other places, they have learned to do this at crossroads, so they can get food safely when the cars stop at red lights.
Other important parts of cultural knowledge include things like group identity (认同), using different tools, having different moving habits and communicating in their own ways.
These traditions can especially be seen in chimpanzees (黑猩猩) communities. Cat Hobaiter, who studies chimpanzees, said, “It’s not just the loss of population s of chimps that worries me. I find it worrying that we may lose each population’s unique culture.”
( ) 24. What does Sam Williams do
A. He catches wild macaws and puts them in the cages.
B. He helps to raise macaws and sends them back to nature.
C. He studies chimpanzee and can communicate with them.
( ) 25. Which one is cultural knowledge
A. Parents teach their children how to find food.
B. Children can find a good place to build nests.
C. Smaller animal populations worry some people.
( ) 26. How does the writer develop paragraph 5
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving examples. C. By asking questions.
( ) 27. Which part of a magazine may the passage be taken from
A. Art. B. Nature. C. Culture.
C
A hundred years ago, a group of scientists built a model that changed the old way people understood reality: quantum mechanics (量子力学). To celebrate the 100th anniversary of its birth, the United Nations named 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.
Quantum mechanics studies very small things. Around 1900, scientists such as Max Planck and Albert Einstein tried to explain why the atomic world could not be described by the classical theories of Isaac Newton. In the 1920s, some scientists broke away from old physics and developed further, opening the door to modern inventions that continue to mold our daily life. These new inventions bring great changes to our life, work and study. As Nature noted: “Modern physics is quantum physics.”
In quantum mechanics, many strange things happen. For example, a small thing can be in two places at the same time. In another rule is called “spooky (玄妙的) action at a distance”, when two small things become entangled (纠缠的), the state of one influences the other at once, no matter how far they are.
These ideas may sound hard to imagine, but they are the base of modern technology. The GPS in your car, the bright LEDs in your phone screen and MRI machines that make medical images all come from quantum rules. Most importantly, the silicon chip (硅芯片) inside every computer depends on quantum effects.
As we celebrate its 100th birthday, quantum science is advancing faster than ever. Scientists are building quantum computers to solve super-hard problems and creating quantum encryption (加密技术) to keep communication safe. Quantum physics teaches us that the universe is full of surprises and that its possibilities are as great as our imagination.
( ) 28. Why did the UN name 2025 the special year
A. To remember the first quantum computer.
B. To introduce the classical theories of Isaac Newton.
C. To celebrate the 100th birthday of quantum mechanics.
( ) 29. What does the underlined word “mold” mean in paragraph 2
A. Shape. B. Break. C. Value.
( ) 30. Which invention uses quantum rules
A. GPS system. B. Traditional cameras. C. Flashlight.
( ) 31. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Quantum science will develop fast in the future.
B. Quantum computer can keep communication safe.
C. Quantum science is full of surprises and imagination.

Suddenly, he found a small house in the desert. Inside it, there was a water pump (水泵). The traveler was excited! He tried to pump water, but no water came out. He was sad. The traveler looked at the bottle. It was full of water. He thought for a minute. “If I drink the water, I can live. But if I pour it into the pump, maybe I can get more water to help others later. I didn’t want to be a selfish man. I must make the right choice.”
At the moment he began to pour the water into the pump. After a while, he pumped again and again, and water came out finally! He drank a lot. Then he refilled the bottle with new water, put it next to the pump, and wrote a new note: “Give first, then get.”
