Passage 1
The top-selling album (唱片) , Songs of the Humpback Whale, was made public in 1970. This collection of nature recordings changed the way many people thought about whales, and it helped save thousands of whales’ lives.
The album might never have been made without a sound engineer named Frank Watlington. In the 1960s, Watlington was making underwater recordings when he noticed some strange, deep sounds. He realized they were coming from whales. Watlington played the recordings for a pair of scientists named Roger and Katy Payne. When they listened, they fell in love with these beautiful voices at once.
Katy Payne studied music as well as animals, and she was greatly surprised by how the whales communicated using sounds like an opera singer. She also noticed another interesting fact: the sounds had clear patterns. According to scientists, an animal sound with a repeating pattern is called a song. Some scientists even compared (比较) these singing animals to musicians.
The Paynes thought that other people should also hear the beauty of the whales’ songs. So Roger made the recordings into an album. At the time when the album came out, whales were often caught, killed and traded for money. Some kinds were even in danger of dying out. Most people had never thought that whales could communicate through songs. But after hearing the album, they began to think differently.
The album led people to take action to save whales. Musicians began using whale songs in their music, and whales were included in movies and television shows. In 1982, a ban (禁令) to stop deep-sea whaling was made. Before it, in the 1950s and 1960s, more than fifty thousand whales per year were killed. After it, the number went down below two thousand.
It might seem impossible that just one album could help save the lives of so many whales. But this album told people secrets about whales that had long been hidden under the sea. It allowed whales to finally share their songs with the human world.
1. Who first found the special voices of the whales
A.A song recorder. B.An opera singer.
C.A sound engineer. D.An animal scientist.
2. What fact about the whales surprised Katy Payne
A.They could talk with scientists. B.They could sing like an opera singer.
C.They could repeat interesting sounds. D.They could communicate through songs.
3. Which is one of the values of the album
A.It successfully stopped deep-sea whaling. B.It helped people understand whales better.
C.It made some music and movie stars popular, D.It encouraged musicians to work with scientists.
4. What is the purpose of the passage
A.To call on people to save whales. B.To tell how a good album was made.
C.To show that whales are born singers. D.To introduce an album and its stories.
Passage 2
New research studying 20 years of ocean information has found that our oceans have changed colour. This also means a great change in the ecosystems of the oceans that is likely caused by human activities.
For tens of years, satellites (卫星) have been watching the colour of Earth’s oceans and collecting information on the colour of light reflecting (反射) off the water. Especially one of the satellites, the Aqua satellite has recently completed 20 years of collecting high-quality global ocean-colour information. A new study has examined this information and found changes in ocean colour over the past 20 years that cannot be explained by natural, year-to-year variability (可变性) alone.
“I’ve been running models to study the ocean colour. The models have been telling me for years that these changes in ocean colour are going to happen,” said Stephanie Dutkiewicz, one of the study’s writers. “To actually see it happening for real is not surprising. But I am scared that these changes are probably caused by human activities.”
The ocean’s colour shows the life that lives in the water. Deep blue water usually has very little life. However, greener water means the presence of ecosystems, mainly plankton (浮游生物). Without plankton, many oceanic food webs would break down. This will greatly impact the sea life and humans who depend on fish for food.
“The colour of our oceans has changed,” said Dutkiewicz. “And we can’t say how. But we can say that changes in colour show changes in plankton communities. Plankton communities are the foundation (基础) of everything that feeds on plankton. So, we hope people take this seriously.”
Next up, Dutkiewicz will try to better understand the colour changes in different ocean areas, as well as looking into what might be causing them.
1. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A.The purpose of the study. B.The writers of the study.
C.The ways of the study. D.The good parts of the study.
2. What does the underlined word “impact” probably mean
A.Make sth grow. B.Have an effect on.
C.Make sth polluted. D.Put sth in balance.
3. According to Paragraph 5, what is Dutkiewicz trying to do
A.To call on people to care about oceans.
B.To point out the importance of oceanic food webs.
C.To tell that plankton is the foundation of everything.
D.To explain how the colour of our oceans has changed.
4. What may Dutkiewicz continue to study
A.The ecosystems in different ocean areas.
B.The results of changes in ocean colour.
C.The plankton communities of different oceans.
D.The reasons for changes in ocean colour.
Passage 3
More and more schools in China are starting to do garbage sorting (垃圾分类), and No.2 Middle School in Nantong is one of them. Since September 2024, the school has carried out a garbage sorting activity to teach students about environmental protection and sustainable development (可持续发展).
The school has put different colored garbage bins in every classroom and on the playground. Green bins are for kitchen waste, blue for recyclable waste, red for harmful waste, and grey for other waste. The teachers teach students how to sort different kinds of garbage and why it’s important. Passage 7
For centuries, China has been known as “a state of ceremony”, which means Liyi Zhibang. There was much greeting etiquette in ancient China. And the fist-and-palm salute (拱手礼) was quite a classic example. Today, although Chinese people usually shake hands when meeting friends and relatives, people still make fist-and-palm salutes when they are paying a visit to someone during the Spring Festival or attending someone’s wedding or birthday party.
The fist-and-palm salute has a history of more than 3,000 years. Since the Western Zhou Dynasty, people had already performed it when meeting peers (同辈). In ancient times, if people met a stranger, they would prepare for a fight if necessary, and their hands were always ready for holding any weapon (武器). Holding hands together pointed towards themselves was a gesture of saying “relax”, meaning “I’m not with any weapon and I’m not here to pick a fight”. Later, it became the etiquette when people met each other or showed thanks.
So, how should people do the fist-and-palm salute properly First, stand at attention. If you’re a man, make a fist (拳) with your right hand, then hold the right hand with your left hand in front of your chest, look at the person, raise both hands to the eyebrows (眉毛), bend down and shake hands gently three times. At the same time, you can also say some lucky greeting words. If you’re a woman, you should do it the other way which should be the right hand on the top.
People may be more familiar with the hold-fist salute, called bao quan li in Chinese. It is widely used among the kung fu masters and students. This gesture is formed by holding the right fist first very tightly closed and covering it with the left hand open, and extending both arms a little forward in front of the chest. Make sure the left thumb (拇指) is close to the index finger (食指) and don’t point it at yourself, as it shows impoliteness.
1. What does the underlined word “etiquette” in Paragraph 1 mean
A.Need. B.Manners.
C.Dances. D.Groups.
2. Which picture shows the CORRECT way for women to do the fist-and-palm salute

A.There are no standards for these two salutes.
B.The fist-and-palm salute is more common in kung fu.
C.Now, people celebrate one’s birthday with the hold-fist salute.
D.These two salutes seem similar, but they are quite different.
Passage 8
When people think of traveling to China, they usually imagine seeing the Great Wall or enjoying delicious food. But for Amie, a young British woman, China means something else—medical treatment.
Amie has been feeling sick for some time. In her home country, getting a doctor’s appointment (预约) is not easy. “I would wait at least two weeks just to see my local doctor,” she says. “But in China, in those same two weeks, I could finish my treatment!”
Her video on TikTok about this decision has been watched by over 400,000 people. She explains (解释) that flying thousands of miles to Beijing feels easier than waiting in the UK’s long medical queues (队伍). Amie wants people to know: “This is not about criticizing the NHS workers. My mom worked for the NHS for 20 years. The workers are great, but the waiting time is the problem.”
How does the UK Medical System Work In the UK, there is a clear process for getting medical care. When someone feels sick, they must first see a GP (General Practitioner). A GP is a local doctor who knows your health history. You cannot go directly to a hospital specialist—the GP must refer you first. This means the GP decides if you really need to see a specialist. If yes, the GP writes a referral letter (介绍信). Then, you wait for the hospital to give you an appointment. Each step takes time, which creates long waiting lists. This system is why Amie faces such long delays before getting treatment.
1. Why did Amie choose to go to China for medical treatment
A.Because she couldn’t afford treatment in the UK.
B.Because the waiting time in the UK was too long.
C.Because her mother worked for the NHS in China.
D.Because she wanted to travel and see the Great Wall.
2. What’s the meaning of “criticizing” in paragraph 3
A.Pay no attention to B.Saying bad things about
C.Introducing or describing D.Saying good things about
3. In the UK’s medical system, what must a patient do FIRST when feeling sick
A.Write a referral letter. B.Wait for an appointment.
C.See a GP (General Practitioner). D.Go directly to a hospital specialist.
4. What can we learn from the passage
A.Different countries have different medical systems.
B.Everyone should go to China for treatment.
C.The UK’s medical system is very bad.
D.China’s medical system is perfect.
Passage 9
A new social media trend (潮流)—known as “Becoming Chinese”—is drawing the attention of TikTok users around the world.
This cultural exchange has led to a wave of people trying out many kinds of Chinese lifestyles online. These lifestyles often include everyday Chinese self-care habits, such as drinking warm water instead of cold drinks; wearing slippers (拖鞋) indoors instead of walking barefoot; eating cooked vegetables rather than raw salad greens; and practising baduanjin slow exercise loved by older people.
The reasons lie in the call for a healthier life from young people and the rising charm of China on the global stage.
The Global Times noted that the wisdom behind Chinese lifestyles helps people deal with burnout. For example, these cultures stress getting close to nature and keeping a balance between yin and yang. The “Becoming Chinese” trend shows that in a fast-changing world, Chinese lifestyles can bring order, inclusiveness (包容) and calm inside.
“Many young people abroad hold a favourable view of China,” said CCTV. This shows China’s growing soft power. It means foreigners are changing their minds, from viewing Chinese culture from afar to taking part in it.
US tech magazine Wired saw this trend as part of a bigger story. Chinese technology and products have been important in Western life for a long period of time, from Chinese phones and open-source AI models to cultural icons like Labubu. The trend is a natural result of this influence.
1. According to Paragraph 2, which of the following is a Chinese self-care habit
A.Drinking cold drinks. B.Walking barefoot indoors.
C.Eating raw salad greens. D.Practising baduanjin.
2. What does the underlined word “favourable” probably mean
A.worried B.positive
C.doubtful D.careful
3. How does the writer explain Chinese lifestyle wisdom in Paragraph 4
A.By giving reasons. B.By giving examples.
C.By listing numbers. D.By telling a story.
4. What is the main idea of the passage
A.Why Chinese lifestyles become popular abroad.
B.How Chinese products are sold worldwide.
C.When “Becoming Chinese” started on TikTok.
D.What Western people think of Chinese lifestyle.
Passage 10
A new study from Nanjing University found that the dunes (沙丘) in western China’s deserts are moving more slowly now.
According to the study, dunes form in places with a lot of sand and little water. They change shape and move depending on how the wind blows.
The team studied dunes in western China’s deserts using pictures from 1986 to 2021. Satellites (卫星) took these pictures from the sky. The team found out that the movement speed of dunes has slowed down by 30 percent. In the area with the fastest drop, the speed of dune movements has dropped from about 9 meters each year to 4.5 meters each year. The main reason is that the wind is not as strong, so it carries less sand, noted China Science Daily.
This finding supports the idea of “global wind stilling”. It means wind near the ground is slowing down worldwide. As the slower wind takes away less sand; sandstorms happen less often. This helps plants grow back in dry areas. However, slower near-ground wind can also make wind power work less well. It might also make it harder for pollution to go away, said researchers from Nanjing University.
1. According to the study, what causes dunes to move
A. B. C. D.
2. What is the correct order of the following events
a. There are fewer sandstorms. b. The wind carries less sand.
c. Wind speed slows down near the ground. d. Plants grow back in dry areas.
A.a-d-b-c B.c-b-a-d C.a-b-c-d D.c-a-d-b
3. What might happen if ground-level wind keeps getting slower
A.Wind power will work much more easily.
B.There will be less air pollution in cities near the desert.
C.Stronger typhoons will form more often over the oceans.
D.Deserts could gradually become less sandy and greener.
4. What can we infer from the passage
A.Satellites were first used to study desert dunes in 1986.
B.The stronger the wind is, the fewer sandstorms there will be.
C.Global wind stilling only brings good changes to the environment.
D.The slowing-down of dune movement is mainly caused by weaker wind.
Passage 11
Putting on VR headsets, people can get quite immersive (沉浸式虚拟现实的) gaming experiences. That sounds like fun, but VR isn’t just for video games. It can also be used in many other industries (行业).
A few years ago, Oral Roberts University in America opened a new Global Learning Center. It has classrooms with 360-degree cameras on the wall. Pu’er is home to the world-famous tea of the same name. Being cut off from the outside by rivers, the Jingmai Mountain has become a heaven for an ancient planting technique. Tea trees grow under forest canopies (树冠), known as the “understory” method, which filters (过滤) sunshine while ensuring water.
Nan Kang was former head of Mangjing Village. He now prefers calling himself a “storyteller of the Jingmai Mountain”. Running a team of more than 40 tea-producing families from different ethnic groups, he now wants to turn Jingmai into an influential name in the kingdom of tea.
A 50-meter tree known as “the tree of the bee spirit” in Mangjing Village is sacred (神圣的) to local hearts. Hundreds of honeycombs (蜂巢) hang from its branches, but no one will touch them to fetch honey as they are in awe (敬畏) of nature. Instead, villagers set up their own hives nearby.
“We have an old belief: If somebody’s hive is empty, it’s a sign of the tree’s punishment,” Nan says. “The owner must have done something to break our rules.”
Nan is an old-time Blang leader’s grandson. Following a leader named Pa Aileng, Nan’s ancestors (祖先) came to live near the Jingmai Mountain centuries ago. It is said that Pa Aileng found tea leaves and cured his people of the diseases using them. So the hero is also honored as a “tea ancestor”. Blang people chose a peak as their sacred mountain to remember him. They call it Peak Aileng.
“We Blang people believe tea has its own spirit,” Nan says. “The first planted tea tree in every field is called the tea spirit tree. That means the field has an owner. And the symbol also urges everyone to follow moral rules and protect the plants.”

【答案】1. C 2. B 3. A 4. D

1. 根据第二段“These lifestyles often include everyday Chinese self-care habits... and practising baduanjin slow exercise loved by older people.”可知,练习八段锦属于中国式的自我护理习惯。
2. 根据第五段“Many young people abroad hold a favourable view of China... from viewing Chinese culture from afar to taking part in it.”可知,外国年轻人从“远观”中国文化转变为“参与”其中,这说明他们对中国的看法是“赞同的、积极的”。
3. 根据第四段“For example, these cultures stress getting close to nature and keeping a balance between yin and yang.”
【答案】1. C 2. B 3. D 4. D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了南京大学的一项新研究发现:中国西部沙漠中的沙丘移动速度正在减缓,分析了沙丘移动的成因、减缓的核心原因,以及地面风速减缓带来的正反两方面影响。
1. 根据第二段“They change shape and move depending on how the wind blows.”可知,沙丘的移动主要是由风的吹动造成的。
2. 根据文章第四段的逻辑:“It means wind near the ground is slowing down worldwide. As the slower wind takes away less sand; sandstorms happen less often. This helps plants grow back in dry areas.”,事件顺序为:c.地面风速减慢→b.风携带的沙子减少→ a.沙尘暴减少→ d.干旱地区的植物重新生长。
3. 根据文章第四段,“slower near-ground wind can also make wind power work less well. It might also make it harder for pollution to go away”,而正面影响是“sandstorms happen less often. This helps plants grow back in dry areas.”,即沙漠可能逐渐不那么多沙、变得更绿。
4. 根据第三段“The main reason is that the wind is not as strong, so it carries less sand”可知,沙丘移动速度减慢的主要原因是风力减弱。

They turn around to follow and take videos of teachers as they teach. Students don’t have to go to the classroom to experience VR. Through an app on their smartphones, they can see the videos in 3D and control them. “VR has changed the way students learn,” Michael Mathews said.
During the 27th Beijing Music Festival in October, 2024, a VR show called *Eight* appeared in Asia for the first time. Passage 12
