Go to any movie theatre or sports venue, and it's obvious there's an invisible bond that forms from laughing, crying, and simply feeling while brushing shoulders with others. Researches have long backed up this sense of connection, but some aspects of the_phenomenon remained unclear. Now, a new study is offering insight.
Writing in the journal Royal Society Open Science, Victor Chung of the cole Normale Supérieure in France and his team reported how they examined the matter by inviting strangers to watch videos together in same sex pairs.
Pairs of strangers watched three types of videos together: positive, negative, and neutral(中性的) with a curtain between them that was either open or closed. At the start of the experiment the researchers asked each participant whether they'd like to meet the other member of their pair again. After watching each video, participants reported their emotions and feelings of connectedness, and after seeing all three videos they were asked once again about their feelings towards the other participant.
The results showed the emotional films generated stronger responses than the neutral film. Crucially, the team said participants' feelings of connectedness within the pairs were boosted when they experienced more intense emotions. However, this was only the case when participants watched the films with the curtain between them open. The researchers said that whether or not the pairs could see each other had no impact on how positively or negatively they felt about the films.
“We found that silently watching emotional films together with another individual is associated with social bonding, even when this person is a stranger and without any verbal(口头的) communication,” said Chung, the study author.
The team added that the findings may help explain why people seek out group activities that generate strong emotions, “even participating in sad memorials that cause negative emotions”. In other words, because emotion bonds us, and humans have a fundamental desire to belong, we're up for experiences one might think we'd naturally want to avoid.
( ) 4. What does “the phenomenon” in paragraph 1 refer to
A. Shared emotions bond people.
B. Physical touch helps tackle stress.
C. A chance encounter leads to a friendship.
D. Entertainment is a crucial part of human life.

A. By analyzing participants' emotions.
B. By comparing participants' self reports.
C. By documenting participants' video responses.
D. By stimulating participants' desire for interaction.
( ) 6. The study found that strong bonds were indeed created between pairs only when ________.
A. they were familiar with each other
B. they watched neutral films together
C. they were aware of the presence of each other
D. they could see each other while watching the films
( ) 7. What is presented in the last paragraph of the text
A. An interpretation of the findings.
B. Potential implication of the findings.
C. Supporting evidence for the findings.
D. The underlying logic behind the findings.

Historical inaccuracies can be found in many films. __1__, or much bigger, such as changing whether someone was good or bad.
Historical films give us a glimpse(一瞥) into the past. Yet some criticize that there are fictional details in them. __2__?
Yes—otherwise they're misleading

The cinema is not a classroom. If the audience learns something while watching a film, that's great. But filmmakers are just trying to make something entertaining and dramatic. They should be allowed to change facts to create the best experience. After all, certain events in real life might have taken place over several years, but in order to be shown in a film, they may need to be packed into less than two hours. Some changes will have to be made for that to work. __5__. Writers and directors have no choice but to imagine what might have happened, and fill in the gaps.
A. Yes—films help us learn from the past
B. Besides, not all historical events have been recorded
C. So should filmmakers be sticking more closely to the truth in their films
D. No—films are meant to be creative
E. So should films transport viewers into a world of make believe

As we age, even if we're healthy, the heart just isn't as efficient in processing oxygen as it used to be. In most people the first signs show up in their 50s or early 60s. And among people who don't exercise, the changes can start even sooner.
“Think of a rubber band. In the beginning, it is flexible, but put it in a drawer for 20 years and it will become dry and easily broken,” says Dr Ben Levine, a heart specialist at the University of Texas. That's what happens to the heart. Fortunately for those in midlife, Levine is finding that even if you haven't been an enthusiastic exerciser, getting in shape now may help improve your aging heart.
Levine and his research team selected volunteers aged between 45 and 64 who did not exercise much but were otherwise healthy. Participants were randomly divided into two groups. The first group participated in a program of nonaerobic(无氧的) exercise—balance training and weight training—three times a week. The second group did high intensity aerobic exercise under the guidance of a trainer for four or more days a week. After two years, the second group saw remarkable improvements in heart health.
“We took these 50 year old hearts and turned the clock back to 30 or 35 year old hearts,” says Levine. “And the reason they got so much stronger and fitter was that their hearts could now fill a lot better and pump(泵送) a lot more blood during exercise.” But the hearts of those who participated in less intense exercise didn't change, he says.
“The sweet spot in life to start exercising, if you haven't already, is in late middle age when the heart still has flexibility,” Levine says. “We put healthy 70 year olds through a year long exercise training program, and nothing happened to them at all.”
Dr Nieca Goldberg, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association, says Levine's findings are a great start. But the study was small and needs to be repeated with far larger groups of people to determine exactly which aspects of an exercise routine make the biggest difference.
( ) 1. What does Levine want to explain by mentioning the rubber band
A. The right way of exercising. B. The causes of a heart attack.
C. The difficulty of keeping fit. D. The aging process of the heart.
( ) 2. In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design
A. The diet plan. B. The professional background.
C. The exercise type. D. The previous physical condition.
( ) 3. What does Levine's research find
A. Middle aged hearts get younger with aerobic exercise.
B. High intensity exercise is more suitable for the young.
C. It is never too late for people to start taking exercise.
D. The more exercise we do, the stronger our hearts get.
( ) 4. What does Dr Nieca Goldberg suggest
A. Making use of the findings. B. Interviewing the study participants.
C. Conducting further research. D. Clarifying the purpose of the study.
Over the past few weeks, I've been experiencing a bad fall, largely attributed to my ADHD(注意缺陷与多动障碍) drugs running out. This has made it challenging for me to find the motivation to tackle daily tasks, including regular exercise.
However, a recent workout led to an epiphany:_neglecting physical activity was actually worsening my condition. It appears that engaging in physical activity could be an effective strategy for managing my ADHD symptoms while I await a prescription refill.
After a workout, my mind feels quieter, much like when I take my medication. This makes sense as ADHD drugs increase levels of a brain chemical called noradrenaline(去甲肾上腺素), enhancing focus, memory, and impulse control. Exercise also increases this chemical.
While these insights are promising, I'm not ready to stop my medication. Research on exercise and ADHD has mixed results. A 2023 review of 106 studies showed exercise significantly improves impulse control, attention, and task switching in young people with ADHD. However, its impact on regulating emotions and improving memories is less pronounced, and the benefits are even less for adults. In another study, 10 minutes of exercise improved impulse control in 82 adults with ADHD but had no effect on other symptoms.
These findings suggest that exercise has a modest effect on ADHD but highlight additional benefits beyond physical health. The evidence is particularly strong for depression and anxiety. A 2023 review of nearly 300 trials involving over 15,800 adults found physical activity as effective as talk therapy and medications in reducing symptoms. The benefit was stronger when combined with these treatments.
Exercise may also alleviate symptoms of other mental health conditions, such as bipolar disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder. It appears protective as well. A 2018 study of over 12 million adults found that those who exercised experienced 43 per cent fewer days of poor mental health than those who didn't. The link was strongest for team sports, cycling, and aerobic and gym activities.
I'm relieved to have found a strategy for managing my ADHD symptoms without medication. Even though exercising is the last thing I want to do when overwhelmed, I now realize its importance. The benefits of exercise for mental health are clear, and I'm committed to making it a priority in my life.
( ) 5. What does the underlined part “an epiphany” most likely mean in paragraph 2
A. A rush resolution or decision. B. A sense of disappointment.
C. A sudden realization or insight. D. A moment of great happiness.
( ) 6. What role does exercise play according to the research findings presented in the passage
A. Exercise is a perfect replacement for ADHD medication.
B. Exercise has no effect on mental health conditions other than ADHD.
C. Exercise can complement medication in managing ADHD symptoms.
D. Exercise benefits physical health more than obsessive compulsive disorder.
( ) 7. Which of the following best describes the author's attitude towards exercise
A. Reluctant but importance aware. B. Casual but focused.
C. Inconsistent but passionate. D. Negative but disciplined.
( ) 8. What can we learn from the author's experience with exercise and ADHD
A. Prevention is better than cure.
B. Every cloud has a silver lining.
C. A healthy outside starts from the inside.
D. The body is a temple; The mind is a palace.

People refer to never forgetting how to ride a bike or throw a baseball as examples of “muscle memory”, the result of motor learning. __1__ It is a phenomenon that previously trained muscles acquire strength after a period of disuse.
Previous research has shown that the changes actually persist in the muscles themselves. In one study of mice, the results suggest that after nuclei in muscle cells multiply in response to an overload of training, those extra nuclei aren't lost during subsequent periods of inactivity. They are retained(保留), essentially waiting to be reactivated. If you fall off the fitness wagon(马车) for some reason, don't be frustrated. Once you have got additional nuclei, you are banking the capacity. __2__ In fact, a recent study revealed that less than eight weeks of retraining was needed to regain your former fitness. It depends on how fit you were initially, how long the lay off was, how old you are and how long you'd been exercising.
__3__ It means you still have a distinct advantage when it comes to regaining your former level of fitness. And the principle applies to both resistance training and endurance training. The best way to regain your muscle memory is to start at a level below what you were accustomed to doing, and then gradually increase in terms of duration, frequency, and then intensity. __4__
Ultimately, muscle memory is a pay off for all the past work you put into learning a sport. __5__ You will never know how much muscle memory you may have until you start training again.
A. The best way to tap into it is to “get back on the horse”.
B. Physiologists, on the other hand, define it in a different way.
C. This convinces the researchers that muscle memory may not be long lasting.
D. That is to say, we can do the sports automatically without conscious thought.
E. It is generally safe to increase these elements by 5 per cent every week or two.
F. It is evident that the more you exercise, the more muscle memory savings you will have.
G. All this news about muscle memory is encouraging for those who fell off the fitness scheme.

Qixi Festival, the Chinese equivalent of Valentine's Day that fell yesterday, was a disappointment not only for forgotten lovers, but also for businessmen left with empty pockets.
The cold reception has prompted cultural experts to seriously worry that the lovers' festival, marked for generations since the Han Dynasty(202 BCAD 220), is dying out. Some have even called for legislation to make the festival a legal “Chinese Lovers' Day”, which falls on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar year.
But the effectiveness of such a measure is in doubt, although efforts to preserve traditional festivals deserve high praise.
A growing number of traditional Chinese festivals, such as the Dragon Boat Festival and Mid Autumn Festival, share the same fate as the Qixi Festival.
Young people are showing less interest in traditional culture as symbolized by these festivals. Even if all traditional festivals are finally made legal, the risk of them becoming purely formalized celebrations with little meaning is not removed. If the younger generation fails to identify with the cultural significance of these holidays, there is little that can be done.
While complaining about traditional festivals' fading appeal, decision makers should reflect on cultural protection. Undeniably, our country has done a bad job of preserving culture and traditional festivals, compared to neighbouring Japan and the Republic of Korea(ROK).
The 2,500 year old Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. The traditional customs and ceremonies of the occasion, which originated in China, have been better preserved in the ROK.
Only a few years ago did China begin to realize the significance of preserving intangible(无形的) cultural heritage when the ROK had planned to apply to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to list its version of the Dragon Boat Festival as an important example of intangible culture.
Concern about the traditional holidays also reminds people of the growing influence of foreign cultures as the country opens wider to the outside world. With traditional festivals becoming less important and imports such as Christmas and Valentine's Day gaining widespread popularity, the public including cultural professionals have tended to measure traditional Chinese festivals in economic terms.
Business rather than culture has begun to play a dominant role. More and more people are preoccupied with how much money can be made during the holidays.
In fact what makes traditional festivals unique and what keeps them alive is their cultural elements. After all, it is unique culture that contributes to the world's diversity with globalization.
( ) 4. What makes Chinese cultural experts worry that the lovers' festival is dying out
A. The disappointment for both businessmen and lovers.
B. The cold reaction of the public to Qixi Festival.
C. The failure to make traditional Chinese festivals legal.
D. The action to preserve culture and traditional festivals.
( ) 5. From paragraph 5 we can learn that ________.
A. traditional festivals are thought more highly of by the young people
B. legal celebrations reduce the risk of disappearing of traditional culture
C. the significance of traditional festivals should be more identified with
D. young people value traditional culture more while they can do little
( ) 6. It is implied by the writer that traditional Chinese festivals should be measured ________.
A. by legal decision B. in economic ways
C. by professional rules D. in cultural terms

From the time he was a young boy, Jim Haskins always had a book in his hand. While other kids were outside playing ball, Jim was usually reading. He could be found in one of his favorite places: curled up underneath the kitchen table or up in the tree that grew in his front yard.
Jim was born in Demopolis, Alabama, during the time of segregation(隔离). Because Jim was black, he was not allowed to check out a single book at the public library. Libraries were for whites only. The laws of segregation separated Jim from all the books he longed to read. But Jim was determined. He convinced a teacher at school to lend him books of her own. He even managed to get some public library books through a white woman whom his mom worked for doing laundry.
When Jim was a teenager, black Americans' struggle for equal rights was becoming the civil rights movement. Many brave people were taking risks by refusing to follow unfair segregation laws. Jim went to Montgomery, Alabama, and joined a civil rights group. The group was headed by Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. Jim believed in King's nonviolent approach to change. Once, during a peaceful march, Jim was arrested. Because of that, his college expelled him.
He did graduate from another college. Afterward, he went on to teach school in Harlem, a part of New York City. As a teacher, he had trouble finding books that interested his black students. So he decided to write his own books about successful black Americans. Through his writing, he met and interviewed many of the people he admired, including Rosa Parks.
Today, libraries have more than one hundred books written by Jim Haskins, the boy who loved to read, and today, children of all races can walk through the doors of any public library and find interesting books that inform, entertain, and inspire them.

1. 根据下文or much bigger, such as changing whether someone was good or bad可知,连词or连接的是两种改动方式,即改动大或改动小,并分别举例。
2. 根据上文“Historical films give us a glimpse into the past. Yet some criticize that there are fictional details in them.”
3. 根据下文“However, in real life he actually helped to rescue a lot of people.”
而下文“The cinema is not a classroom.”
5. 根据下文“Writers and directors have no choice but to imagine what might have happened, and fill in the gaps.”

根据下文thick red glasses, untidy hair and large metal braces on her teeth可知,贝蒂有着不时尚的穿着品位。
