Unlike some of Spain's tourist hot spots, where tensions between locals and tourists have risen over the summer, the Cíes Islands present a rare success story. A simple but effective cap on daily visitor numbers has greatly reduced the pressure on the environment and created a more pleasant experience for visitors.
Before boarding the ferry boat to the islands, visitors must first secure a QR code from the Galician regional government and pay £25 for the round trip fare. “It was chaos before the cap,” says José Bouzas, the director of the park. “There were just too many people. Now, not only do they understand the need for this limit, but they also appreciate it. It allows visitors to enjoy their time here without impacting the ecosystem.”
Spain's overtourism problems aren't limited to its most famous cities. Mass tourism has become a flashpoint for local annoyances. Protests erupted in multiple locations this year against the unchecked growth that affects local life. While tourism is often blamed for broader social issues, some experts argue that it's only part of the problem. Linda Osti, a senior tourism lecturer at Bangor University, suggests that protests in cities like Barcelona expose a deeper disconnect between local authorities and residents. “Local governments should talk more about their intentions with their communities,” Osti says. “It's not just about tourism; it's about economic planning. If local people had better housing and employment conditions, tourism wouldn't be such a flashpoint.”
As visitors sail to the Cíes Islands, they witness a rare and beautiful balance between nature and tourism. It's a place where nature lovers and eco conscious travellers can enjoy a break from the crowds that overwhelm other parts of Spain. But this careful balance wasn't achieved overnight. It required local authorities to take tough decisions, like the cap on visitors, and to stick with them, even as tourism grew elsewhere. For José Bouzas, the lesson is clear: “If you don't conserve these islands, there's no point. You'd end up killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.”
( ) 4. What's the secret to the Cíes Islands' success in tourism
A. Limiting tourist numbers. B. Building more facilities.
C. Practising green tourism. D. Providing quality service.
( ) 5. What is a requirement for tourists to visit the Cíes Islands
A. Taking a local ferry boat. B. Buying travel insurance.
C. Getting an official QR code. D. Passing security checks.
( ) 6. What should the government do according to Linda Osti
A. Communicate with tourists.
B. Promote community interactions.
C. Develop the mass tourism industry.
D. Improve housing and employment.
( ) 7. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Tourism benefits both tourists and local people.
B. The local authority will continue the tourism policy.
C. The ecosystem on the Cíes Islands needs improving.
D. Travellers will visit the Cíes Islands in large crowds.

A[2024广东茂名一模]
Researchers have identified a growing threat to astronomy from the sunlight reflecting off communication devices in space. One such device, a communication satellite called BlueWalker 3, is currently one of the brightest objects visible from Earth, matching the brightness of Procyon and Achernar, two of the brightest stars in the night sky.
“BlueWalker 3 is visible in both dark sky and urban skies, though in urban settings this will be limited to when BlueWalker 3 passes overhead,” said Dr Jeremy Tregloan Reed, a co author of the study at the University of Atacama in Chile. “Large constellations(星座) of bright artificial satellites in low Earth orbit pose significant challenges to ground based astronomy,” the study's authors wrote.
Tregloan Reed said a large reflective brightness means that when a satellite crosses the detector of a telescope, it leaves a mark that can be difficult, if not impossible, to remove. This could lead to loss of data from the affected pixels(像素). But he said space based astronomy also faced challenges from such satellites, noting that observations by the Hubble telescope had increasingly been affected by marks from Starlink satellites. Besides, the team notes the radio frequencies used by BlueWalker 3 are close to those used for radio astronomy, raising the possibility that such satellites could cause interference.
While BlueWalker 3 was folded when it was launched last year, once in space it opened up to reveal a huge surface area that reflected sunlight. Tregloan Reed added, “Even if all the reflective brightness of all satellites was reduced to below the level visible by the naked eye, the sky background glow will increase due to the accumulative effect of having hundreds of thousands of satellites from various operators from many countries in low Earth orbit. It is disastrous!”
BlueWalker 3, built by AST SpaceMobile, is just the first one to be launched. The company is planning a constellation of satellites nicknamed BlueBirds, consisting of over 100 similar satellites and aimed to provide satellite network service for the whole world. You can imagine how bright the night sky will be at that time!
( ) 1. What can we know about BlueWalker 3
A. It threatens the sunlight.
B. It was invented by Dr Jeremy.
C. It is brighter than Procyon and Achernar.
D. It is visible in urban skies when passing overhead.
( ) 2. The brightness of BlueWalker 3 is most likely to affect ________.
A. Earth orbit B. space observation
C. radio frequency D. satellite communication
( ) 3. Concerning the plan of BlueBirds, what might the author agree with
A. It has potential drawbacks.
B. It is bound to be accomplished.
C. It is irreplaceable for astronomy.
D. It provides network service for the world.
( ) 4. What's the best title for the passage
A. BlueWalker 3—A Bright and Dark “Star”
B. BlueWalker 3—The Most Valuable Satellite
C. The Night Sky—Glowing with BlueWalker 3
D. The Night Sky—Heavily Polluted by BlueWalker 3
B[2025河南新乡二模]
The final week of February 2025 offered a unique opportunity for star watchers to see all seven other planets of our solar system align(对齐) in the night sky. Throughout February, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune were visible, and then Mercury joined them to complete the lineup. The exact timing of this event depended on your location, but it promised to be a remarkable sight.
These planetary alignments, often called “planetary parades”, have captured significant media attention recently. While they were indeed awe inspiring, it was important to clarify some common misconceptions before you headed outside to observe. For instance, seeing Uranus and Neptune required binoculars or a small telescope, as they were not visible to human eyes. Additionally, some planets appeared low on the western horizon around dusk, while others were bright and high in the sky after sunset.
A planetary alignment occurred when planets lined up on the same side of the sun. This happened because the planets orbited the sun in a similar plane, known as the ecliptic(黄道). As a result, from our perspective on Earth, the planets appeared to form a line across the sky, even if they were not perfectly aligned in space.
Seeing multiple planets at once is not exceedingly rare, but spotting all seven is special. Such events become rarer with each additional planet in the lineup. Astrophysicist David Armstrong said this great planetary alignment wouldn't happen again until 2040. The alignment also coincided with a new moon, which was ideal for watching stars due to the minimal light it reflected.
On the night of 28th February, the best time to observe was right after sunset. Mercury, Neptune, and Saturn were low in the western sky, with Venus shining brightly above them. While not all planets might have been visible, the interest in this “planetary parade” was a catalyst for engagement. Engaging in astronomy and appreciating the wonders of the solar system was a fantastic experience. If you had had the chance and interest, you could have taken the time to step outside and witness this event.
( ) 5. What is the author's purpose in writing the first paragraph
A. To present a phenomenon.
B. To compare astronomical events.
C. To show the exact observation location.
D. To list the planets in order of their brightness.
( ) 6. What do we know about all the planets during the alignment
A. They looked equally bright after sunset.
B. They were tiny and invisible to human eyes.
C. Their height was on the same horizon at dusk.
D. Their visibility varied with time and positions.
( ) 7. Why is the new moon mentioned
A. To explain how the ecliptic was formed.
B. To introduce the conditions of the alignment.
C. To state why the alignment was easier to see.
D. To recommend the ideal place for watching planets.
( ) 8. What does the underlined word “catalyst” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Big loss. B. Driving force.
C. Bad idea. D. Desperate experience.

Over the last 60 years, many spacecraft have flown by, orbited and even landed on Mars. But human explorers could work faster and be more flexible than machines. Setting foot on Mars would be a major milestone in space exploration. __1__ However, it is difficult to survive this adventure.
First, a round trip to Mars causes many extra health risks. For one thing, floating in microgravity for long periods weakens bones and muscles. For another, it allows fluid to build up in the head. __2__ Luckily, artificial gravity machines could help.
Then there's space radiation to worry about. The Earth's magnetic field protects astronauts near Earth from high energy cosmic(宇宙的) rays. Those cosmic rays might raise the risk of cancer and other health problems. __3__ This increases the risk of developing the diseases. Taking certain vitamins could reduce the impacts.
__4__ Since astronauts can't carry construction materials from Earth, scientists are dreaming up ways for astronauts to use materials on Mars. Long term visitors would also need plenty of oxygen to breathe. A device on NASA's Perseverance rover is currently laying the groundwork for a future Mars oxygen factory.
Planning a trip to Mars isn't just about keeping astronauts safe. __5__ Humans are filled with microbes(微生物). And spreading those microbes could be bad for the search for life on Mars. As a result, a key part of responsible space exploration is making sure Earth bacteria don't infect other planets.
A. Exploring space always comes with risks.
B. It also involves protecting Mars from astronauts.

It's unusual to read novels about women taking an active role in the resistance during World War Ⅱ, especially those of Dutch women, who were expected to keep the home fires burning and let the men get on with the fighting. So, I was intrigued when discovering many Dutch female fighters who risked their lives for their country in wartime.
My book, The Girl with the Red Hair, is based on the true story of Hannie Schaft, the most famous of those brave women. To the Dutch, Hannie was an icon of resistance during World War Ⅱ, and around the country there are schools and streets named after her.
At the start of the war, Hannie was a law student at the University of Amsterdam, but her studies were disrupted by the German occupation of the Netherlands. On May 14th, 1940, a German bombing raid almost destroyed Rotterdam, forcing thousands to flee the burning city. As the Nazis began targeting Jews, Hannie decided to act. Whether it was sheltering Jews or transporting top secret information in her saddlebags, setting fire to military facilities or shooting Nazi officers, the breathtaking courage she demonstrated was unprecedented. Hannie was prepared to take on any assignment in her quest for justice.
Hannie's story ends tragically. It was Hannie's great misfortune to be arrested only weeks before the end of the war. Though this black haired girl refused to talk under questioning, her red hair roots gave her identity away. One cold spring morning, Hannie was taken from her cell and marched to a point, where one of the Nazi soldiers took aim. But his first shot only_grazed her ear. She said, “Idiot! I shoot better than you.” The second bullet took her life.
It has been a humbling experience writing this book about Hannie Schaft. Although my book is a work of fiction, I hope I've done justice to this incredible and inspiring woman. Come and discover more about my new novel, the second in The Dutch Girl series, called The Girl with the Red Hair.

B[2026湘豫联考期中]
The early civilization of Mesopotamia consisted of fairly small farming communities. A common theory is that they may have originally come together in order to integrate the need for irrigation(灌溉) systems; the Tigris and Euphrates rivers are known for flooding unpredictably, so it took a lot of human effort to create the canals necessary to shift floodwaters and irrigate the farmlands near the rivers. Recent archaeological evidence suggests other motives, however, including the need for protection from rival(对手) groups and access to natural resources that were concentrated in a specific area.
Of the areas in which agriculture developed, the Fertile Crescent enjoyed significant advantages. Many nutritious crops like wheat and barley grew naturally in the region. Several of the key animal species that were first domesticated by humans were also native to the region, including goats, sheep, and cows. The region was also much more temperate and fertile(肥沃的) than it is today, and the change from hunting and gathering to large scale farming was possible in Mesopotamia in a way that it was not in most other regions of the ancient world.
The food surplus(盈余) that agriculture made possible in the Fertile Crescent eventually led to the emergence of the first large settlements. Some of the earliest that were large enough to qualify as towns or even small cities were Jericho in Palestine, which existed by about 8000 BCE, and atalh yük in Türkiye, which existed by about 7500 BCE.
From their remains it becomes possible to piece together certain facts about ancient societies on the tip of civilization. First, it is clear that the earliest settlements already had significant social divisions. Hunter gatherer societies have very few social divisions. All members of the group are roughly equal in social power. One of the features of civilization is the increasing complexity of social divisions, and with them, of social grade. In atalh yük, tombs(坟墓) have revealed that some people were buried with jewelry and wealth, while others were buried with practically nothing. It is very clear that even at such an ancient time, there were already major divisions between rich and poor.
( ) 5. Why did early Mesopotamian farming communities come together
A. To defend against natural disasters.
B. To fight against rival groups for resources.
C. To ensure the success of their agriculture.
D. To increase their concentration in a special region.
( ) 6. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the Fertile Crescent
A. Its progress in developing farming.
B. Its strengths in developing agriculture.
C. Its richness in domesticated animals.
D. Its difficulties in hunting and gathering.
( ) 7. How does the author explain the appearance of cities
A. By exploring the root causes.
B. By listing some specific years.
C. By giving some typical examples.
D. By comparing different settlements.
( ) 8. What would the text discuss next
A. A further illustration of social divisions.
B. The complexity of these early settlements.
C. The exploration of ancient burial practices.
D. A contrast of the agricultural productivity.

Discoveries in Greenland indicate that the Vikings(维京人) lived there for hundreds of years, trading with the European continent before they disappeared. __1__ In 980 CE, Erik the Red headed farther west when he was driven away from Iceland for some reason. He set sail for land that was visible west of Iceland. Three years later, he returned to Iceland and convinced hundreds of others to join him in settling in this new country. Some 25 boats set out for what Erik the Red had called Greenland. __2__
Settling in Greenland posed an enormous challenge. Shelter, food, and clothing were, of course, essential to survival. There were no trees large enough to produce wood for housing. These settlers had to build homes of driftwood, stone, and sod(草皮). The summer was too short to grow grain crops, so they farmed domesticated animals imported from Europe and mainly relied on secondary products, such as milk and cheese. __3__ The settlers usually wore clothes made of the fur of wild animals.
At some point during the fourteenth century, Greenland's climate grew colder. Glaciers(冰川) began moving slowly over the land, bringing with them a runoff of sand, mud, and stones. These things slowly robbed the settlers of valuable grassland. __4__ Recent evidence shows that their diet shifted from land based food to sea products. Like their relatives in Norway, the Vikings in Greenland tried to take advantage of the sea. Soon, the percentage of their food taken from the sea had risen to 80 percent.
__5__ According to Danish archaeologist(考古学家) Jette Arneborg, they struggled to adapt to the increasingly difficult conditions. As the weather worsened, they may have abandoned their settlements and returned to Iceland.
A. Who were the Vikings
B. Besides, they netted fish and hunted deer.
C. However, the Greenlanders learned to adapt.
D. Sports were also widely practiced by the Vikings.
E. Well, what became of these early settlers in Greenland
F. Only 14 boats survived the seas, and about 450 people set foot ashore.
G. A central figure in this story was Erik the Red, who grew up in Iceland.

It's a race against time, as generations of cultural heritage conservators at the Dunhuang Academy make a great effort to protect the artistic charm of the Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, despite erosion(侵蚀) by sand and wind.
The team is dedicated to protecting the 45,000 square meters of murals(壁画) and more than 2,400 painted sculptures of the 735 caves of the site, the construction of which spans about a thousand years, from the 4th century to the 14th century. The cultural relics are the product of the cultural exchanges that took place over centuries on the ancient Silk Road. “Our work, repairing murals and painted sculptures, is to better preserve the caves, which promotes the great Dunhuang spirit of inclusiveness to the world and inspires modern people,” says Su Bomin, director of the Dunhuang Academy.
Commonly seen “diseases” affecting the murals include cracking and flaking(剥落), as well as erosion that is caused by changes in temperature and humidity of the caves, and the deposition of salts. To restore a mural requires an all rounder. Restorers should know painting, master the skills of a mason and have some knowledge of chemistry and physics, to be able to recognize the problems and their corresponding causes and deliver a solution. They must also select proper materials and tools, and conduct experiments, before formally carrying out the restoration and evaluating the effect afterward.
The restoration should respect the original work and aim to maintain the status quo of the murals rather than repainting them. When the restorers find some parts of murals missing or fading away, they never repaint them to create a “perfect” appearance in restoration. “Cultural relics are witnesses of history,” explains Su. “When you pursue the so called intact(完好无损的) look for artistic reasons, you will lose their key meaning.”
Cave conservation is about continuously solving problems. “It needs long term research to better preserve the caves over a much wider time span that goes beyond our lifetimes,” Su says. But at least, they can keep the existing look of the murals for as long as possible.
( ) 4. What is the main purpose of paragraph 2
A. To show the popularity of Dunhuang murals.
B. To explain the history of the ancient Silk Road.
C. To stress the significance of the restoration work.
D. To present the ways of protecting cultural heritage.
( ) 5. Which of the following best describes the restoration work
A. Creative. B. Well paid. C. Interesting. D. Demanding.
( ) 6. What should restoring murals focus on according to paragraph 4
A. Spotting the faded murals in time.
B. Fixing the missing parts of murals.
C. Making preservation of the murals as they are.
D. Repainting to perfect the appearance of murals.
( ) 7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Artistic Charm of Mural Paintings
B. The Mural Restoration in the Mogao Caves
C. The Successful Experiment on Cave Conservation
D. The Role of the Dunhuang Spirit in Chinese Culture

根据第一段中“A simple but effective cap on daily visitor numbers has greatly reduced the pressure on the environment and created a more pleasant experience for visitors.”可知,Cíes Islands成功的关键在于限制游客数量。
5. 细节理解题。根据第二段中“Before boarding the ferry boat to the islands, visitors must first secure a QR code from the Galician regional government and pay £25 for the round trip fare.”可知,游客想要访问Cíes Islands的一个必要条件是获得官方二维码。
6. 推理判断题。根据第三段中Linda Osti的话“Local governments should talk more about their intentions with their communities”及“It's not just about tourism; it's about economic planning. If local people had better housing and employment conditions, tourism wouldn't be such a flashpoint.”可以推断,Linda Osti认为政府应当改善住房条件和就业状况。
7. 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“But this careful balance wasn't achieved overnight … ‘If you don't conserve these islands, there's no point. You'd end up killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.’”可知,虽然限制游客数量短期内会影响收入,但长远来看,对Cíes Islands的发展是有好处的。所以可以推断出地方当局将继续执行现有的旅游政策,以保护自然环境。
