In many Chinese villages, there is a special kind of art called
“farmers’ painting.” This art form was born in the 1950s. Farmers

beauty of country life and the farmers’ love for their land.
One famous place for farmers’ painting is Huxian County in Shaanxi

When Sarah first came to China three years ago, she knew very little
Chinese. She felt lost and lonely in a new country. But she was
determined to learn the language and understand the culture.
Sarah started by learning 50 new words every day. She wrote them on
small cards and reviewed them whenever she had free time — on the
bus, during lunch break, even before going to sleep. She also watched
Chinese TV shows with subtitles (字幕) and listened to Chinese songs.
“The first few months were really hard,” Sarah said. “I often mixed
up the tones (声调). Once I said ‘I want to sleep’ but it sounded
like‘I want to die’because of the wrong tone. Everyone laughed, but
I laughed too. Making mistakes is part of learning.”
After one year, Sarah could hold basic conversations. After two
years, she was able to read newspapers and watch movies without
subtitles. Now, after three years, she speaks Chinese fluently. She
even gives speeches in Chinese at work.
“Learning Chinese changed my life,” Sarah said. “It opened up a

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to remember everything
while others forget things easily The answer lies in how our brains
work.
Our brain has a part called the hippocampus (海马体), which is very
important for memory. When we learn something new, the hippocampus
helps to store the information. But if we don’t use that information
again, the brain may slowly forget it. That’s why reviewing what you
learn is so important.
Scientists have found that there is a good way to remember things
better: spaced repetition. This means you review new information at
different times, not all at once. For example, if you learn 10 new
words today, review them tomorrow, then again after three days, then
after a week. This helps the brain move information from short-term
memory to long-term memory.
Another useful way is to connect new information with things you
already know. If you are learning about pandas, think about what you
already know — they are black and white, they eat bamboo, they live
in China. Making these connections helps your brain create stronger
memory paths.
Getting enough sleep is also very important for memory. During sleep,
your brain organizes and stores what you learned during the day. So
don’t stay up late studying — a good night’s sleep will help you
remember better the next day.
56. What part of the brain is very important for memory
A. The brain stem.
B. The hippocampus.
C. The cerebellum.
D. The frontal lobe.
57. What does “spaced repetition” mean according to the passage
A. Learning everything in one day.
B. Reviewing information at different times.
C. Reading information again and again without stopping.
D. Writing down everything you learn.
58. How can you create stronger memory paths
A. By learning more new things every day.
B. By connecting new information with things you already know.
C. By studying for a long time without a break.
D. By reading the same page many times.
59. What should you do to remember better according to the passage
A. Stay up late studying.
B. Avoid sleeping too much.
C. Get enough sleep.
D. Study all night before an exam.
60. Which of the following is the best title for this passage
A. How to Be a Good Student
B. The Importance of Sleep
C. Ways to Improve Your Memory
D. How the Human Brain Works

Every year, millions of birds fly from one place to another. This is
called migration (迁 徙 ). Birds migrate to find food and better
weather. Some birds fly very long distances.
The Arctic tern (北极燕鸥) is the champion of migration. It flies
from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back every year. That’s about
70,000 kilometers! During its life, an Arctic tern may fly as far as
three times the distance from the Earth to the Moon.
How do birds find their way during migration Scientists are still
studying this question. They believe birds use many different ways.
Some birds use the sun and stars to find direction. Others use the
Earth’s magnetic field (磁场). Some birds even remember landmarks
like mountains and rivers.
Migration is a dangerous journey. Many birds die from bad weather,
lack of food, or predators (捕 食 者 ). However, birds must keep
migrating to survive. It is part of their nature.
