Three very strong women—my mother,my grandmother, and Melinda—deserve big credit(赞扬) for helping me become the man I am today. But Blanche Caffiere,a very kind librarian and teacher I’ve never written about publicly before, also had a huge influence on me.
When I first met Mrs Caffiere, she was the elegant and engaging school librarian at Seattle’s View Ridge Elementary School, and I was a shy fourth grader.I was desperately trying to go unnoticed, because I had some big deficits, like terrible handwriting and a messy desk. And I was trying to hide the fact that I liked to read something that was cool for girls but not for boys.
Mrs Caffiere took me under her wing and helped make it okay for me to be a messy and nerdy boy who was reading lots of books.
She pulled me out of my shell by sharing her love of books. She started by asking questions like “What do you like to read ” and “What are you interested in ”Then she found me a lot of books—ones that were more complex and challenging than those science fiction books I was reading at the time. For example, she gave me great biographies she had read.Once I’d read them, she would make time to discuss them with me.She sincerely listened to what I was saying.Through those conversations about books in the library and in the classroom we became good friends.
Looking back on it now, there’s no question that my time with Mrs Caffiere helped spark my interest in libraries. It’s remarkable how much power one good person can have in shaping the life of a child.

Freshman year of high school is a big transition (过渡) for any student.
Luckily, you’re not the only person going through this, and plenty of others have made the transition before you.
One of the ways in which high school is different from middle school or junior high the most is the higher expectations. You’ll find that you’re expected to keep closer track of your own schedule and responsibilities with fewer people checking up on you.At the same time,
your classes are likely to become more challenging, and you might be participating in new school activities as well.
Some students find it hard to keep up with everything at first, which is totally normal. One way to prepare in advance for these higher expectations is to make sure that you have organised schedules in place before you start high school.
Another important skill for meeting these higher expectations is building a strong support network. No matter how strong a student you are,at some point you will need some help.Keeping healthy relationships with your friends and teachers is a great way to make sure that you have people who are willing to help when you need them.
Try to get to know at least some of your teachers beyond your classroom communication.
Be an active learner during class and stay after class to ask questions.Take advantage of email or class messaging systems. The better your teachers know you,the better prepared they’ll be to help when you need them.
It’s important for you to keep in mind as you start high school that no one is perfect.
Transitions are hard for everyone and starting high school is a big transition. These challenges provide a great chance to reinvent yourself.

Going from middle school to high school can be difficult,as students are faced with new academic and social challenges. Before the first day of high school, there are things every soon-to-be high school freshman and his family should know.
People that have a fixed mindset (思维倾向) believe that they are born to be great or weak.On the other hand, people that have a growth mindset believe that their greatness or weakness is because of their own actions.I totally agree that students should have a growth mindset.I don’t expect any student to move from just passing a subject to an A+.It’s going to take time and focused effort;just keep working on it.
Parents should prepare students to fight the battle “on the pillow” and “in the kitchen”.
When I say “pillow”,I mean sleep. Not having enough sleep can have some bad effects on students, including improper behaviour, anxiety and poor grades. The second weapon is eating healthy and balanced meals.Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive (专心的) during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades. This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled time.Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them.
A lot of students who know each other from primary and middle school are in their “comfort zones”,feeling they have a sense of control over and expectations of their relationships. Then comes the first real day of high school, and that will all change. The reason why I encourage high school freshmen to step out of their comfort zones, though often scary,is that comfort zones get boring and there are many kinds of people to get to know.Let’s encourage them to get involved, have fun and play.

Ms Clay, the art teacher, stood at the front of the room.“Class, next Friday our school is going to have an art competition,” she announced.Ms Clay was a great teacher, and Lily liked her a lot.But this announcement made Lily nervous.“Everyone in the school will create a piece of artwork to show in the library. You can use the different types of artwork we have been studying.” Ms Clay was quite excited when she spoke while Lily found herself sinking lower in her chair.
Lily had the whole weekend to work on her project, but she could not think of anything to do.On Monday,Lily felt frightened,so after school Lily asked Ms Clay if she could write an art paper instead of doing an art project.
“I understand this project scared you,Lily,” Ms Clay said.“Just remember, you can create any kind of art you want.” Ms Clay smiled at her.“Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings—it isn’t always painting, drawing,or cutting.I know you will think of something very creative, and I can’t wait to see it.”
When Lily arrived home, she took out a piece of paper and a pencil. She remembered Ms Clay’s words.“Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings.” Lily wrote the word “terrified” on her paper. She crumpled (揉皱) the paper and threw it to the side of her desk.

(Text 8)
W:Professor Johnson,I was deeply impressed by your lecture just now.I’ve learnt a lot from it.
M:I’m glad you liked it.
W:Can I ask you some questions
M:Yes,go ahead.
W:When did man first begin to paint pictures 10,000 years ago
M:We don’t have a clear idea of that. But the oldest paintings discovered so far are about 20,000 years old.Paintings of large animals have been found in deep caves in southern France and northern Spain.
W:Why did these ancient people paint these pictures
M:In my opinion, these people painted pictures for two reasons.First, they believed that the painted pictures could attract animals so that those animals could be killed and eaten.
W:It seems likely that the cavemen had similar ideas.
M:That’s right.Second, painting was also a way for those people to express their feelings towards the outside world.
W:Thank you very much,Professor Johnson.
(Text 9)
W:By the way,how did your meeting go
M:It was quite interesting.
W:So what did they talk about
M:Uh,recycling, mostly. They have this plan that everyone should write to the Council.Ask them to collect more rubbish.I’m going to share my duty this evening.
W:Oh,I see.I think I might go to the next meeting.I’ve been meaning to do something...um,I mean, get more active about the environment.
M:Yes,we all need to.Global warming,ice caps melting,pollution.
W:Yes,we’re facing so many environment problems. It’s really frightening.
M:Well, there’s something we could do right now. There’s this poster they want to put up all over the college. They’ve asked us to print it out and put it up in college. You want to help me
W:Sure! It might be an idea to ask Kate to come too.I think she would be glad to do this.
M:Yes,let’s ask her.Why don’t we print it out right now
W:Sure.
(Text 10)
M:Hello, everyone. My name is Donald.I’d like to talk about two sports I like.I love to ski and snowboard.I am 17 years old,and I have been skiing since I was five, and snowboarding since I was eight. In my opinion, snowboarding is more fun than skiing. The ski poles make it very simple to change my direction. There are no poles in snowboarding, however,so when you snowboard, you have to understand the snow very well to make sure you don’t fall. The feeling I get while I’m snowboarding is more exciting than when I’m skiing, because I like having less control.I enjoy the challenge. Many people think that the reduced amount of control in snowboarding makes the sport more dangerous. But in my opinion, snowboarding is actually safer than skiing, because when you ski, you’re standing on two skis.If you fall while on skis,it is very easy to break your bones by getting your skis stuck in the snow.On a snowboard,
your legs stay together even when you fall.

Then Lily stared at the crumpled ball.Suddenly an idea struck her.

Why not create something out of crumpled paper The crumpled paper reminded her of a snowball, making her extremely excited .She didn’t have to draw, paint or even cut.Without any hesitation, she made many paper balls, glued them all together, and placed them on a big piece of hard paper to form a snowman, who wore a hat made of black paper and a scarf made of red paper .To her surprise, her finished project was really wonderful.
On Friday,Lily carefully carried her project into the library. She noticed the smiles and the nods from teachers and other students as she put her work on a table .Ms Clay walked over to Lily and said,“You have created a creative piece of artwork.I am so proud of you!”Lily was proud of herself, too. Her pride grew when Ms Clay placed a first-place star on her artwork .“Maybe I am a good artist after all,” Lily thought.
