In the core of Shenzhen’s Luohu District, a remarkable environmental transformation is taking place. The Yulong Landfill, once a towering “garbage mountain” left idle for over two decades, has become China’s largest full-scale landfill excavation (挖掘) and surface restoration project. Local residents, who once avoided the area due to unpleasant odors and health concerns, now watch with anticipation as the garbage heap is turned into a symbol of environmental progress and urban renewal.
The Yulong Landfill, opened in 1983 and closed in 2005, was one of Shenzhen’s earliest simple waste disposal sites. It accumulated about 255 million cubic meters of waste. As the city expanded rapidly, the landfill, once on the urban edge, was surrounded by residential and commercial buildings, becoming an environmental hazard with groundwater pollution, methane leakage and unpleasant odors. This affected residents’ quality of life and hindered the city’s sustainable development.
In 2024, Shenzhen launched the 2.17-billion-yuan Yulong Landfill Remediation Project to fully excavate and relocate the waste. It aims to remove garbage, reclaim land and set a new standard for urban environmental management. Professional engineers and experts ensure the process is scientific, efficient and eco-friendly.
To minimize environmental impact, the project uses advanced technologies: a large canopy to contain dust and odors, aerobic pretreatment to stabilize waste, and real-time monitoring. Every step is supervised to avoid secondary pollution and protect residents’ health. Excavated waste is sorted: combustibles are incinerated for electricity, inert materials recycled for construction, and other waste safely treated. This turns waste into resources, embodying circular economy and green development.
