Huck and Tom were good friends, and they both cared about Jim very much. They heard that Jim was locked up in a small hut and decided to save him. At first, they planned to take the key from the old man after he fell asleep. But Tom did not like this easy way. He loved exciting adventures, so he refused the easy plan and wanted to try something difficult.
One dark night, the two boys walked to the hut quietly. Huck found a high window and thought Jim could run away through it. But Tom shook his head and said, “We need a harder way and we do not want to hurry.” Then they decided to dig a tunnel under the hut. They used shovels and worked really hard the whole night until they broke through the ground.
They went through the tunnel and saw Jim at once. A chain tied Jim to the bed and he looked very happy to see them. Huck wanted to cut the chain right away, but Tom stopped him quickly. “That is not how people do it in storybooks,” Tom said in a loud voice.
Later, Uncle Silas put an ad in the newspaper to look for Jim’s owner. Huck was quite afraid because he worried that Jim would be sold to other places far away. That night, some men came to visit Uncle Silas. Huck and Tom took a sharp saw and ran back to the hut as fast as they could. Huck started to cut the chain, but Tom still insisted on doing it in a special way, just like the stories he read.
