I have to say it is rather uncommon for males of my age to be classical music enthusiasts.I was not born into a musical family and neither of my parents learnt classical music. There wasn’t much music in my home either. So,how did it all start
题组训练
The story dates back to the times when I was in kindergarten, which offered classical music CDs to parents.Thinking that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get me some music to listen to,my parents ordered them without any ambition of developing an interest in classical music or whatever.Without knowing who Bach,Vivaldi and Chopin were or what to expect,I just played the CDs one after one and grew increasingly fond of them.
What took place meanwhile was my piano studies, which again exposed me to classical music. But I have to admit the beginner pieces sounded rather uninspired and dull to me.Thanks to the Internet,I was able to explore more than what my first piano teacher offered—from piano to orchestral music, from Bach to Scriabin.Very often,I didn’t practise the pieces my teacher assigned, but the pieces I truly loved! It’s also through the Internet that I discovered one of my piano idols later,Grigory Sokolov.Later on,I became interested in not only the music itself, but also composers and music history.
I still remember in a 28-day outdoor programme in Australia organised by my high school,we weren’t allowed to use our mobile phones and there wasn’t any piano either. What I could only do was to repeatedly recall Chopin’s 24 Preludes Op.28 when walking up the hills.I felt peaceful as usual, but even happier with growing enthusiasm for music.
To me,classical music explores the deepest emotions of humanity, but can be so humorous as well. The magic of it lies in its ability to cast light on aspects of human conditions and,at the same time,to go beyond the reality.

Instead of throwing away the pits (核) or nuts after eating fruit like many people, inheritors of nut-carving will collect them and turn them into artworks.
“One nut, ranging from 0.8 to 6 centimetres, can be shaped into delicate earrings, buttons, seals, etc,” said Tan Wanhai,an inheritor of Weifang
nut-carving.
Weifang nut-carving can be traced back to the Qing Dynasty, during which a retired royal craftsman Wang Dayan spread the skill to the locals in Shandong Province.Craftsmen back then often used peach pits to display their artistic skills.Due to the demanding carving skills and its rich artistic content including many different elements,Weifang nut-carving was listed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage as early as 2008.
Tan has studied the nut-carving for many years and has created many nut-carvings along the way.Yet,the craftsman also admitted that the journey of bringing this kind of masterpiece to life is not all smooth sailing.“Unlike some pits like olive pits whose surfaces are flat, each peach pit has a unique texture like fingerprints,”Tan said, adding that craftsmen should have the capability to trace each peach pit carefully to plan their artwork besides the carving technique itself.
Also, craftsmen need to have a wide foundation of knowledge when it comes to carving nuts.According to Tan,they have to master skills in painting,seal-carving and calligraphy from many traditional cultures.
Sometimes,to better depict classic folktales or legends in their artworks, they need to read many books to prepare themselves.
It is this kind of dedication that Tan and others possess that allows Weifang nut-carving to thrive when many traditional skills are gradually disappearing.“In recent years,Weifang nut-carving artworks have been increasingly welcomed by people in China for their inventive layouts and novel ideas,”Tan said. This popularity,in turn, has also attracted many people to learn the skill of nut-carving and even become inheritors to pass it down.

In the hottest months of each year, many powerful storms are born in the Atlantic and Caribbean Sea.Of these, only about half a dozen cause the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that are named hurricanes, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and most seriously, bring death to large numbers of people.
题组训练
The great storms that hit the coast start as harmless circling disturbances (大气搅动),hundreds, even thousands of miles out at sea.As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westwards by the trade winds. When conditions are just right, warm,
wet air flows in at the bottom of such a disturbance, moves upwards through it and comes out at the top.In this course, the moisture in this warm air produces rains, and with it the heat is changed into energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to swirl (旋转) in a counter-clockwise (逆时针方向) motion.
The average life of a hurricane is only about nine days but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The hidden energy of the heat given off by a hurricane’s rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the US for more than six months.Water, not wind,is the main source of death and destruction in a hurricane.A typical hurricane brings 6-to-12-inch downpour resulting in sudden floods.Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea,the mountains of water moving towards the low-pressure hurricane centre. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves towards the shore.

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are indicating that accurate quake forecasting may be attainable, thereby casting doubt on the conventional wisdom that such an accomplishment is beyond our capabilities.Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin created an AI model that, during a test run in China, correctly forecasted approximately 70 percent of earthquakes with a one-week warning and offered reliable assessments of their potential intensity.
The researchers attribute their technique’s effectiveness to its reliance on a straightforward machine learning framework. The AI was provided with a set of statistical features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics, and then instructed to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the AI offered predictions by detecting early indicators of quakes hidden within the planet’s low-frequency rumbles (持续而低沉的声音).
The project marks a substantial breakthrough in the exploration of AI for anticipating seismic (地震的) events. According to Alexandros Savvaidis,a senior researcher heading the Texas Seismological Network,“Seismic occurrences strike without warning, often in the blink of an eye.Your readiness is all you can influence. Achieving a 70% prediction rate is a considerable achievement that could significantly restrict the impact of earthquakes, reducing both the financial burden and loss of life, and has the potential to remarkably improve earthquake preparation worldwide. ”
Although the effectiveness of this method in different regions remains uncertain, the researchers believe that their AI model has the potential to enhance prediction accuracy when carried out in regions equipped with dependable seismic monitoring facilities. Their next step is to test the AI in Texas, where the University of Texas’s TexNet operates a network of 300 earthquake stations and over six years’ worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location for these purposes.
Ultimately, the authors aim to combine the system with physics-based models. This approach could be particularly valuable in areas characterised by limited or inadequate data.“That may be a long way off, but many advances such as this one, taken together, are what moves science forward,” concludes Scott Tinker, the bureau’s director.

As climate change continues to be a contributing factor to the frequency and intensity of disaster events, timely and effective preparedness can save lives and protect property. But according to a study in the University of Michigan, nearly half of the young people surveyed on disaster preparedness showed they lack readiness for any type of disaster event during a period when climate-related disasters are becoming increasingly frequent.
Surveying 1,083 individuals aged 14 to 24 through text messaging, the University’s My Voice project brought to the forefront the attitudes young people hold regarding disaster preparedness. Of those surveyed, 47% of the young people disclosed having no readiness for potential disasters, with the lack of finances and resources being cited as primary reasons for their lack of readiness.
“While respondents felt there were actions they could take now to prepare for a future disaster, some were unsure of the most effective readiness approaches they and their communities could take,” said Katherine Kruger, lead author and a Ph.D. student at the U-M School of Nursing.
“Youth are significant stakeholders in developing strategies to be ready for disasters and their insights can lead to policy development that allows youth to prioritise the effective readiness strategies to reduce the potentially destructive impacts and promote individual and community resilience (适应力)” Kruger added. Inclusion of young individuals in readiness planning is crucial. They provide unique perspectives that can greatly enhance strategies designed to boost resilience both at the individual and community levels.
The study’s findings highlight an opportunity to engage youth in readiness efforts that empower them and strengthen the larger emergency management framework. Young people’s capacities for innovation and communication are valuable assets in disaster response and recovery.
“Our research underscores the need for including young people as key stakeholders in disaster preparedness.” Kruger said. “As highlighted by the United Nations Office of Disaster Risk Reduction’s Youth Engagement Action Plan, their active contribution is indispensable.”

As a kid,I dreamt of becoming a marine biologist and I lived out this fantasy by setting up aquariums at home. Then,at 20,I was introduced to photographer David Liittschwager, who hired me to help him with a magazine assignment on the marine life.
题组训练
David’s assignment was to document the amazing biodiversity found in the ocean. My role was to collect specimens for him to photograph.Every night,I would cast a floating lamp.Like moths drawn to a flame, mysterious creatures would emerge from the depths in search of this light.I’d then set up aquariums to house them as they waited for David to take their shot.
Those evenings made me feel as if I had been on another planet.I had never imagined such strange life-forms could exist in our oceans. But I didn’t grasp the true magic of what was in front of me until I saw the photographs David took.
The biggest surprise was his image of a baby flounder.I caught this fish by accident.Only later did I notice its two tiny eyeballs staring back at me
But David’s photograph of this flounder revealed a universe of details that even my eager eyes had missed. His macro lens magnified its ribs (肋骨).The lightning-fast exposure froze its motion.A precisely aimed light released the rainbow hidden in its skin. And the black background removed all distractions to focus our attention on the quiet beauty at hand.
Years after that project,I was snorkeling (潜泳) on a shallow reef.Out of the darkness, another baby flounder emerged and settled on my mask. This time I knew what to look for. Before working for David,I had assumed the goal of photography was simply to reproduce an observation so that others could share the same experience. It had never occurred to me that photography could expand our visual perception and therefore teach us to look at the world from new perspectives.

I was driving on a hot morning to Los Angeles in a brand-new car.I stopped to get fuel.I thought any gas would work, and I picked one.A while later, getting closer to Los Angeles, that’s when the car suddenly died.
I called the rental agency.Ten minutes later,a man named Jackson came with a breakdown truck and moved me off the road.I told him what was wrong.I felt so depressed, and I started to cry.“Don’t worry, madam.
Everything will be fine,” he said.“It’s OK to cry.I sometimes cry.” Then we sat in his truck to wait for the agent from the car-rental company. He gave me some suggestions on driving and cars.It seemed as if the rental company had taken advantage of me by giving me a bad car.
When the agent finally came,I was then driven to the rental office.I was mad about getting a car that didn’t work right and complained to the manager. He offered me another car,but I didn’t want to handle more driving and asked for a refund of the full amount. The manager agreed gently. Then,as we went to get my stuff from the car,I saw something written on the windshield (挡风玻璃):“Diesel Only.” I searched diesel and learnt that gas shouldn’t be put in a diesel car.I thought:Oh! It was my fault.I felt so stupid.
The manager left me at the train station with my suitcase and three bags, where I asked a policeman what train to take to Los Angeles. He said a bus would be quicker, and then he carried my bags to the stop and told the driver to tell me when to get off, which he did.
On the way to the hotel,I felt a whole chain of people helped me,but I was trapped in thinking everyone had bad intentions. It’s natural to be cautious in the complex world, but I guess I needed to be more open to the kindness of strangers,to see the potential for good in every interaction.

Sandy and Jane came to see the jobo tree on the hilltop again.Jobos were their favourite fruit, but the tree belonged to a lady who lived in the house by the hill. They heard she was difficult, but that sometimes she would give fruit in return for an errand (差使).
The girls finally gathered their courage to knock on her door.An elderly woman with a fierce look answered, staring down at the girls.“We heard...” said Sandy, her voice shaky,“that you give jobos in payment for running an errand.”
The lady raised an eyebrow, then went into the kitchen and took two baskets. She put them into the girls’ hands.“Go fill these with jobos, and come right back.”
The girls raced up the hill to the tree and filled the baskets with the ripest jobos.Back at the house, the lady filled a bag with rice and handed it to Sandy.“Take this bag and one basket of jobos to the Brown family. And ask them for the payment,” the lady added with a tight smile.“If you return without the payment, you won’t get the fruit.”
The girls struggled all the way with the bag and the basket. When they were there,Mrs Brown answered the door.Inside the door were three little children, each painting something on paper.Mr Brown was lying sick in bed.Times were hard.
The girls handed her the food.“This is from the lady with the jobo tree,” said Sandy.
“She asked for the payment, too,” Jane said awkwardly.
“The payment! The payment!” The children repeated, waving the papers in their hands happily.
Sandy and Jane looked at each other strangely. With a smile,Mrs Brown handed Sandy a large sealed (密封的) envelope so full that it was almost starting to break open. The girls said goodbye and left quickly.“I wonder,” Sandy murmured,“whether Mrs Brown can afford to pay for that food.”

Born in 1958 in Nanning,Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region,Dr Huang Danian became interested in geophysics early. His parents, teaching at a local geological institution, passed the passion down to him.In 1977,Huang was admitted to Changchun Institute of Geology and later taught there. He once wrote that rejuvenating (使恢复活力) the Chinese nation was their generation’s responsibility.
以读促写
In 1992,he went to Britain for further studies. There,he obtained his doctorate in geophysics and joined a local firm.During his time in the UK,Huang remained devoted to the motherland, frequently flying back to China to attend academic meetings or seminars related to his field. In 2009,he returned to China with great resolve. For him,no matter how successful he was abroad, the biggest satisfaction would be improving his home country.
Upon his return to China,he was entrusted to work at Jilin University as a professor and chief scientist in a branch of China’s biggest deep-earth exploration programme.Over 400 scientists participated in the programme,
which aimed to fix high-tech cameras on aircraft, ships, and satellites that would enable scientists to see through Earth’s crust (地壳) without digging into it.
For seven years,Huang worked racing against time. Many of his
co-workers called him a workaholic while he thought he was more like a “lunatic (疯狂的人)”.“China is in urgent need of ‘lunatics’ if it is to become a stronger country. It would be an honour if I could be one of them,” he said. The lunatic’s madness paid off.He and his team helped China greatly narrow its gap with developed countries in obtaining precise data on
deep-earth exploration.They created a number of China’s No.1s,filling many technical gaps for China’s sky survey,ground detection,and sea exploration.
During his whole life,he sought no fame, and always kept the motherland in mind.As a scientist,he fulfilled his dream of rejuvenating the nation with exceptional achievements.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) geolocation (人工智能地理定位) solutions are changing the way researchers track and monitor wildlife, enabling more powerful conservation efforts. These systems use advanced sensors, satellite imagery, and machine learning algorithms (算法) to gather real-time data on animal movements, habitat preferences, and migration patterns.1.
D
Traditional tracking methods often rely on non-automatic tracking or inconvenient necklace-like systems, which may cause stress and discomfort to the animals.2. The devices can work as tags and the camera traps can be set up remotely, which decreases human impact on wildlife.
B
In addition,AI-powered devices collect and analyse data precisely.
Through their assistance, scientists can gain insights into habitat choices and evaluate the effect of global warming on wild animal locations.3. For example,by analysing the collected data, conservationists can promote targeted habitat restoration efforts according to the patterns and connections they discovered with the help of AI geolocation devices.
A
4. By monitoring animals’ behavioural changes in real time, researchers can quickly detect signs of environmental issues.Sudden changes in an animal’s movements could indicate threats or problems.Researchers can then respond immediately, potentially saving the animal’s life.
Sharing geolocation data through online platforms can also help raise awareness about protecting endangered species.5. This helps them feel more connected to the issues wildlife faces in habitats. The bond promotes a sense of responsibility among individuals and encourages them to contribute to wildlife conservation efforts through various means, such as donations, volunteer work, and so on.
G
E
A.This knowledge enables them to make accurate and efficient decisions.
B.However,AI tracking does not require disturbing contact with the animals.

Jeffrey,a teacher of communications, has used his research to define the exact amount of time necessary to make friends with someone. Moreover,he’s found how long it will take to deepen a relationship. His new study found that it takes around 50 hours of time together to go from being someone’s acquaintance (泛泛之交) to casual friend. It takes about 90 hours to go from being casual friends to friends, and more than 200 hours before considering someone a close friend or best friend.
以读促写
But it isn’t spending just any kind of time together that deepens a friendship—hours spent working together, for example, don’t count as much as hours spent getting to know someone by hanging out, joking around,
playing games, and doing more playful activities. The study explained that these kinds of activities help us to form a deeper connection with someone.“We have to put that time in,” Jeffrey said.“You can’t make a friend without any effort.”
The results of the study came from analysis of 355 responses to an online survey from adults who said they had moved in the last six months and were looking for new friends near their new homes.Survey participants were asked about new relationships as well as hours spent together and activities they did. They were then asked to rate their resulting relationships according to one of the four stages:acquaintance, casual friend, friend and close friend.
The main conclusion that Jeffrey came to is that making close friends takes serious effort. So if you want to have some best friends, you have to know that spending time with someone is the most important thing.

Initial conversations can have a huge impact on how relationships develop over time.People are often stuck in the impressions they think they might have made the minute they finish speaking with someone for the first time: “Did they like me or were they just being polite ” “Were they deep in thought or deeply bored ”
To find out whether these worries are necessary,we have conducted nearly 10 years of research. In our studies, participants in the UK talked with someone they had never met before.Afterwards, they were asked how much they liked their conversation partners and how much they believed that their conversation partners liked them. This allowed us to compare how much people believed they were liked to how much they were actually liked.
Time and time again,we found that people left their conversations with negative feelings about the impression they made. That is,people systematically underestimate how much their conversation partners like them and enjoy their company—a false belief we call the “liking gap”.
This bias (偏见) may seem like something that would occur only in initial interactions, but its effects extend far beyond first impressions.Surprisingly, the liking gap can constantly affect a variety of relationships, including interactions with coworkers, long after the initial conversations have taken place.Having a larger liking gap is associated with being less willing to ask workmates for help, less willing to provide workmates with open and honest feedback, and less willing to work on a project together.
There are numerous strategies to minimise your biased feelings. One place to start is shifting your focus of attention.Try to direct your attention to your conversation partners,be genuinely curious about them, ask them more questions, and really listen to their answers. The more you’re zeroed in on the other person and the less you’re focused on yourself, the better your conversations will be and the less your mind will turn to all the things you think you didn’t do well.

( )8.Which might be the best title for the text
A.Liking Gap May Influence Social Performances
B.Initial Conversations Decide First Impressions

The idea of climbing Mount Qomolangma disgusted me.The mountain came to represent the opposite of everything that I loved and respected about climbing. What had once been the final mountain climbing goal became the focus of a commercial guiding industry.Whenever I was asked whether I’d climb Mount Qomolangma,my answer was always the same:not interested.
题组训练
That was probably where my personal Mount Qomolangma story would have ended, were it not for an old friend and his obsession (迷恋) with one of the greatest mysteries. In 1999,Thom Pollard began to explore and found the remains of George Mallory, the celebrated British climber who disappeared while he was attempting to be the first to climb Mount Qomolangma. But Mallory’s partner,Sandy Irvine, and the camera he had likely carried, were not found. The mountain climbing world has been wondering whether they might have reached the top in 1924.
Pollard’s story moved me.I began to pack for the climb and expected that our advanced equipment would make it manageable, perhaps easy.I was wrong. On the highest point on the planet,I was more tired than I’d ever been in any climbing.Along the way,I continuously tipped my hat,not just to Mallory and Irvine but to anyone who has the drive to push himself or herself up to this route. My search was in vain, but I began to reconsider Mount Qomolangma.
I witnessed many climbers, who were much more than just self-centred tourists. We shared route information, weather forecasts, and family photos—all united around a common goal.
I went to Mount Qomolangma to seek Mallory and Irvine. But in the end,
I found something more difficult to get:the spirit that Irvine and Mallory shared. It was hiding in plain sight, right where it has always been:inside the brave souls who risk so much to follow in storied adventurers’ footsteps to climb Mount Qomolangma.
【语篇导读】 本文是夹叙夹议文。文章主要讲述在Thom Pollard的激励下,作者开始攀登珠穆朗玛峰,在攀登的过程中,作者感悟到了很多。

The ocean feels boundless. If you were to start swimming from shore,it’s easy to believe—fitness and oxygen aside—you could continue forever. That’s a far different experience to overland travel, where mountains, rivers, and highways jammed with traffic prevent easy passage. It’s equally easy to believe that fish and other highly mobile sea creatures experience the ocean in such a fashion. These animals, adapted over thousands of years to navigate the ocean, must easily bypass(绕过)any barrier around which they can theoretically swim. That assumption, though,is wrong.
It’s common for many oceanic species to stick to specific habitats and only seldom swim beyond them. That is especially true for many immature animals, which are small and easy to fall victim to predators. This, however,
can cause unexpectedly big problems for oceanic species, especially when infrastructure (基础设施) gets in the way.
Take, for example, the green sawfish living near the mouth of the Ashburton River in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. In 2017,engineers working on a local oil and gas processing plant built a new loading facility consisting of a large piling jetty (码头) and solid rock wall, which stretched 500 metres offshore.Later, scientists realised that the green sawfish were unable,or unwilling,to pass around the barrier. But that could prevent the animals from reaching valuable feeding grounds and other habitats.
This discovery leads to a surprising new idea that sea animals, much like land species, need a helping hand to get around human infrastructure.
In the case of the green sawfish, engineers could have created underpasses in the jetty through which the fish could swim.
As the climate continues to change, many sea species are moving farther north and they need suitable habitats to move through.Whether creating pass-throughs in artificial structures or plotting routes away from warming oceans, thoughtfully designing our infrastructure could go a long way towards protecting animals as we continue to engineer the ocean.
