The History and Meaning of Mooncakes
Mooncakes are more than just a delicious treat—they are a symbol of family reunion and cultural heritage in China. Eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, these round pastries have a history that dates back over 1,000 years.
The story of mooncakes begins in the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD).
At that time, people offered mooncakes to the moon goddess Chang’e as a way to show their respect and wish for a bountiful harvest. The cakes were round to represent the full moon, which is a central symbol of the festival. Over time, mooncakes became a popular gift among families and friends, and their recipe evolved to include sweet fillings like lotus seed paste and red bean.
However, the most famous chapter in mooncake history comes from the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644 AD). Legend says that rebel leaders used mooncakes to hide messages planning a revolt against the Mongol rulers. They distributed the cakes to villagers, who found the notes inside and joined the uprising. This clever plan helped the rebels overthrow the Mongols and establish the Ming Dynasty. Today, this story is still told during the Mid-Autumn Festival, reminding people of the importance of unity and courage.
Today, mooncakes come in a wide variety of flavors and styles.
Traditional fillings include lotus seed paste with a salted egg yolk, while modern versions feature chocolate, matcha, or even ice cream.
Some mooncakes are decorated with intricate patterns of flowers or the moon, making them as beautiful as they are tasty.
Beyond their taste and history, mooncakes carry a deep cultural meaning. The round shape symbolizes completeness and togetherness, so families often gather to eat mooncakes and watch the full moon on the festival night. For many Chinese people, mooncakes are a way to connect with their roots and share love with their loved ones— no matter how far apart they are.

My Favorite Cultural Symbol
When it comes to my favorite cultural symbol, Henan Opera never fails to rank first in my mind. It symbolizes the richness of traditional Chinese culture.
There are many reasons why I like it best. The first is its use of vivid colors in makeup. Each color has a specific meaning and sends different messages to the audience. Second, it has a unique singing style. Actors usually use singing skills to express emotions and characters’ thoughts. Last, the performances often present beautiful costumes. They are not only pleasant to look at, but also show characters’ personalities.
To promote our traditional culture, I plan to set up a club and call on my friends to learn this art form. What’s more, we can make videos and post them on the Internet to spread it. It should be considered as a historical and artistic treasure.
