August 24th, in the year 79 AD, began like any other day in Pompeii. The sun shone brightly, and the streets were full of life. Merchants were selling fruits, and children were playing in the squares. No one knew that death was hiding under the beautiful mountain, Mount Vesuvius.

Every afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go and play in the Giant (巨人)’s garden.
It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass, beautiful flowers and twelve peach trees. The birds sat on the trees and sang so sweetly that the children used to stop their games to listen to them. “How happy we are here!” they cried to each other.
One day the Giant came back and saw the children playing in the garden. “What are you doing here ” he cried in a very unfriendly voice, and the children ran away.

One morning the Giant was lying in bed when he heard some lovely music. It was so long since he had heard a bird sing in his garden. He jumped out of bed and looked out.
