Mark, an eighth-grader felt stressed by schoolwork. One hot afternoon, as he tried to finish maths problems at his desk, the numbers swam before his tired eyes. A failed test paper lay on the floor. Fear filled his heart. He ran to a park and sat on an old bench (长凳).
By a large tree, an old man was feeding birds. Birds flew down freely, and some even landed on his open hand. “Young friend,” the old man said kindly, noticing Mark’s sad face, “why does sadness hang over you like heavy rain ”
Mark shared his worries: there were many tests, sleepless nights, and fear of failing. The old man listened quietly. Picking up a stick, he drew a river in the dirt (泥土). “Notice these bends (弯曲处) ” he said softly. “If water pushes straight forward, it will break against rocks or disappear. But by flowing gently (温柔地流), turning around stones, it reaches the sea.” He told Mark how famous thinkers found their best ideas while resting: Beethoven walking in the woods, Newton sitting under a tree. “Bright minds,” he smiled, “need quiet moments to grow.”
The next day, Mark woke up 30 minutes earlier than before. Instead of studying, he watched the sunrise paint the sky pink and orange. He drew funny cloud shapes in his notebook. During short breaks, he sat under trees, eyes closed, listening to leaves whisper (发出沙沙声). Slowly, his body felt lighter. Surprisingly, difficult maths problems seemed easier, as if his mind was wiped clean.
One month later, Mark got an A in the maths test. But his true joy came from words in his notebook, “Today, I learned to move like a river—strong but gentle.”

Call them if you return home later than usual. Say sorry to them when you make mistakes. Talk about your ideas with them. They may talk about theirs with you.

A Lesson I Learned from a Mistake
Last term, I made a big mistake. I borrowed my friend Tom’s new pen but lost it carelessly. I was too afraid to tell him the truth, so I said nothing. When he asked about it, I lied and said I had returned it.
Tom was very upset because he trusted me. I felt guilty every day. Finally, I gathered my courage and told him the truth. I apologized sincerely and bought him a new pen.
Tom forgave me. From this mistake, I learned that honesty is always the best choice. Lying only makes things worse. Growing up means taking responsibility for our actions, even when it’s hard.

The wind started blowing strongly, and soon it began to rain heavily. I quickly closed all the windows and doors. Then I turned on the light because it was getting darker and darker.
