Volunteering allows us to connect with our community and make it a better place. In Indonesia (印度尼西亚), I did a lot of volunteer work to help children, the elderly and the environment.
Last year, I volunteered at a recycling (回收) centre in Indonesia with my friends. As soon as we arrived, we saw huge piles of plastic (塑料) bottles on the ground. I wondered, “What are we going to do with those ”
A group of people from the recycling centre welcomed us. One person said that bottles and caps (瓶盖) were made of different materials and had different uses. He said, “Today, you are going to remove (除去) the plastic covers and caps from all of these plastic bottles.” I put on my mask and gloves, sat down on a stool (凳子) and started grabbing plastic bottles and removing their plastic covers with a cutting tool.
There were straws (吸管) and trash (垃圾) inside the bottles, so I had to remove these items. Some of my friends were not comfortable doing this work and neither was I, but it was important work and was part of a larger effort to improve the environment. After we finished removing the covers and caps from the plastic bottles, we crushed (压碎) all the plastic bottles and put them all in a larger box.
After a long day, we finally finished our work. Though it was a simple job, it would have a lasting influence (影响) on our lives and our environment. That’s what volunteering is about. How meaningful it is!

We are all familiar with banks where we save money, but have you ever heard of a “Food Bank” In Futian District of Shenzhen, there are smart boxes that look like package lockers. They offer free fresh food to people in need day and night.
The project started in May 2022. It is an effort of the local government, companies and social groups. Up to now, 22 such smart boxes have been set up across 10 streets in Futian, and they are always filled with different kinds of safe food.
Just like a traditional bank, this system works with “deposits” (存款) and “withdrawals” (取款). The “deposits” are extra or soon-to-expire (即将过期的) but safe food from 87 partner companies. The “withdrawals” are different from those in a money bank. The food is given to people who need help most. Before 8 p.m., low-income (低收入) families, the disabled and street cleaners can get the food through the “i Shenzhen” App. To cut down on food waste, any leftover food is open to the public after 8 p.m.
Safety is the most important thing. The food bank follows strict rules: the boxes are kept at low temperatures, knowing where all food comes from and workers check it often.
By December 2025, the project has helped 484,000 people. It has saved 195 tons of food from being wasted and cut carbon emissions (碳排放) by 390 tons. These food banks do more than offer food. They help build a warm community spirit and encourage green living, setting a great example of Shenzhen’s kindness and creativity.
16. What is a “Food Bank” according to the passage

Dear Scott,
How is it going These days we had a discussion about why students should do volunteer work. Here are my opinions to share with you.
Doing volunteer work not only helps us to learn about life outside class that we can’t learn from the text, but also develops our life skills which can help us take care of ourselves. It’s even more helpful for us to grow up. It’s not enough for us to just get good grades at school. We should learn how to help others because helping others is helping ourselves. What’s more, while doing volunteer work, we can make more friends who have the same interests as us and know what we want to be and try our best to achieve it.
What do you think of it Would you like to share your ideas with me
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
Li Hua
