Body language is an important part of communication. It can help us show feelings and understand others better. Here are some useful ways to use body language well.
First, keep your body relaxed. When you talk with others, don’t stand too straight or too stiff (僵硬的). If you are too nervous, others will feel uncomfortable too. Try to stand or sit in a comfortable way.
Second, make proper eye contact (眼神交流). Looking at others’ eyes shows that you are listening carefully. But don’t stare at others for too long, because it may make them feel worried. In most Western countries, eye contact is a sign of friendliness. However, in some Asian countries, it is not polite to look into others’ eyes for a long time.
Third, use your hands properly. You can wave your hands to say hello or goodbye. You can also use small gestures (手势) to help you talk. But don’t move your hands too much, or it will be noisy and impolite.
Fourth, smile often. A warm smile can make you look friendly and easy to get along with. It can also make others feel happy and relaxed. Even when you are in trouble, a smile can help you cheer up.
Remember that different countries have different body language. Before you visit a new place, you’d better learn about its body language first. It will help you communicate better and make fewer mistakes.

Cartoons are very popular among children and even adults. But do you know how cartoons started
The first cartoons were not for fun. Long long ago, people drew pictures on walls to tell stories. These early pictures were like simple cartoons. They showed people’s life and activities at that time.
Later, with the development of printing (印刷), cartoons appeared in newspapers and magazines. At first, they were only single (单一的) pictures. They were often used to show ideas and criticize (批评) some social problems. People could understand the meaning easily from the simple drawings.
In the 20th century, cartoons developed much faster. Artists began to make animated cartoons (动画片). The first animated cartoons were very short. They had no sound or words. People could only watch the characters move on the screen.
As time went by, sound and stories were added to cartoons. Cartoons became more and more interesting. Later, colour cartoons came out. They looked more beautiful and lively.

However, red-crowned cranes are now in great danger. The number of them is becoming smaller and smaller. Why First, many wetlands are turned into farms and buildings. So red-crowned cranes are losing their living places. Second, water pollution makes it hard for them to find clean food. Third, some people catch and kill them for their beautiful feathers.
Luckily, more and more people are trying to protect these lovely birds. Many countries set up nature reserves (自然保护区) for red-crowned cranes. In these places, the birds can live safely and freely. People also plant more trees and clean the rivers to improve their living environment.
Scientists are also doing a lot to help. They study the life habits of red-crowned cranes and teach people how to protect them. Some kind people raise money to help save these birds.

Doing small experiments is a great way to learn new knowledge. Last week, our science teacher asked us to do three simple experiments. I learned a lot from them.
The first experiment was about water and paper. We put a dry piece of paper into the bottom of a glass. Then we turned the glass upside down and pushed it into water slowly. To our surprise, the paper didn’t get wet at all. It showed that there is air in the glass. The air kept the water away from the paper.
The second experiment taught us about weight. We took two same bags. We filled one with cotton and the other with small stones. Although the bags looked the same size, the stone bag was much heavier. It told us that weight is not just about size. Some things are light but big, while others are heavy but small.
The third experiment was about seeds. We put some seeds in three places: a warm place with sunlight, a dark cold place, and a place without water. Only the seeds in the warm sunny place grew well. The other seeds either stopped growing or died soon. It showed that seeds need sunlight, water and warm weather to grow.
These experiments were not difficult, but they were very meaningful. I used to learn knowledge only from books. Now I know that learning by doing is more interesting and helpful. If we try more, we will find science is around us everywhere.
38. Why didn’t the paper get wet in the first experiment
A. Because the glass was very small. B. Because there was no water in the bowl.
C. Because the air in the glass kept water out. D. Because the paper was very thick.
39. What did the second experiment show
A. Light things are always small. B. Heavy things are always big.
C. Size and weight are the same. D. Weight doesn’t only depend on size.
40. What do seeds need to grow well
A. Sunlight, water and warmth. B. Wind, rain and cold air.
C. Dark places and dry soil. D. Large space and sweet food.
