Why do we weigh differently on other planets? When you weigh yourself, you see a number. Whether you like it or not , that’s your 1 on the earth , right? You may 2 : Do I weigh the same on other planets?
Before exploring the answer to this , it’s important to understand the 3 between weight and mass(质量). The two seem to be the 4 when we use them in our daily conversation. But to a physicist , they are 5 different things.
The mass of a body is a measure of how 6 matter it holds. Your mass does not change with 7 . If you 8 on Mars , there will be no change in your size or shape. That means your mass 9 the same. Your mass doesn’t change on other planets , 10 , but the gravity (重力) and size of those planets affect how much you weigh. Your weight on any planet is a result of your mass , the gravity of the planet and the distance (距 离 ) you are from the centre of the planet. Your weight is a measure of the pull of gravity between you and the planet you are standing on. The 11 the gravity is , the higher your weight is. Astronauts may not weigh anything in space and can move around without touching anything 12 , because there is no gravity to 13 them down. As a result , there is no weight.
How much gravity the planet has 14 the size of the planet. A small planet has less gravity and a larger planet has more gravity. If you were to stand on a more massive(巨大的) planet such as Jupiter(木星) , you would 15 more; if you were to stand on a less massive planet such as Mars , you would weigh less.

Historically , people explored the ocean to find new ways to travel around the world or to start new trade ways. Today , we pay more attention to the ocean itself in the ocean exploration.
In recent years , new technology has made it easier to dive (潜水) into the deep sea. Better submarines (潜艇) , robots and cameras now allow scientists to explore areas people couldn’t reach before. China’s Mengxiang deep-ocean drilling vessel(大洋钻探船) can now be added to the list.
Human beings actually don’t know much about the ocean. Believe it or not , we know more about space than we do about the deep sea. Since l969 , a total of l2 people have walked on the moon , but only three have dived to the Mariana Trench’s deepest point. Even more shocking ? Although the ocean covers about 7l % of the earth’s surface , 95% of it is unexplored.
Why does so much of the ocean remain unknown? Part of the answer is that it’s difficult to explore. Sure , it’s hard to get a spaceship into space. But remember that in space , you can see things. The deep sea , however , is hopelessly dark. Getting a light down there that can shine far enough to see anything is no easy task.
That being said , ocean exploration is worth the risk and cost. The ocean is connected to all of us and plays a role in everything from the air we breathe , the food we eat and the transportation of the goods we buy to weather and longer-term climate trends(趋势).
Most of our knowledge of the ocean comes from shallower waters , but deeper waters are becoming more important. Many fisheries are built in deep waters. The deep ocean also holds a huge amount of oil , gas , metal and so on.
( B )21. Why didn’t scientists reach the deep sea in the past?
A. They thought it wasn’t worth the risk.
B. They didn’t have high-level technology.
C. They had no need to explore the deep sea.
D. They wanted the knowledge from shallower waters.
( C )22. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. China’s Mengxiang deep-ocean drilling vessel is popular with tourists.
B. China’s Mengxiang deep-ocean drilling vessel is mainly used for trade.
C. China has made great progress in ocean exploration technology.
D. China is the first country to explore shallower and deeper waters.
( C )23. Why does the writer mention space in the text?
A. To prove the interest of ocean exploration.
B. To show the necessity of space exploration.
C. To show the difficulty of ocean exploration.
D. To prove the importance of space exploration.
( D )24. The underlined word “task” refers to “ ”.
A. inventing a new light
B. seeing the things in space
C. getting a spaceship into space
D. sending a bright enough light down
( A )25. What can we get from the text?
A. Our understanding of the ocean is less than we thought before.
B. The ocean coverage is the largest and we have explored most of it.
C. More resources come from the shallower waters than from deeper ones.
D. Three times more people dived into the ocean than walked on the moon.

Dear Mike,
I’m glad that you are interested in the “Exploring Plants on Campus” activity at our school. I can’t wait to share something about it with you.
Firstly , our science teacher showed us different plants in the schoolyard , teaching us how to tell them apart. Then a well-known teacher gave us an interesting speech about different kinds of plants in the world. She used simple stories to make the speech easy to understand. Finally , we attended the plant exhibition in our school hall , which was really cool.
This activity was really meaningful. It made me realise how wonderful nature is and how important it is to protect nature. I really hope you can also take part in such a fun activity in the future.
Best wishes,
Li Hua

Why do we weigh differently on other planets? When you weigh yourself, you see a number. Whether you like it or not, that’s your 1 on the earth, right? You may 2 : Do I weigh the same on other planets?
Before exploring the answer to this, it’s important to understand the 3 between weight and mass(质量). The two seem to be the 4 when we use them in our daily conversation. But to a physicist, they are 5 different things.

The mass of a body is a measure of how 6 matter it holds. Your mass does not change with 7 . If you 8 on Mars, there will be no change in your size or shape. That means your mass 9 the same. Your mass doesn’t change on other planets, 10 , but the gravity(重力) and size of those planets affect how much you weigh. Your weight on any planet is a result of your mass, the gravity of the planet and the distance(距离) you are from the centre of the planet. Your weight is a measure of the pull of gravity between you and the planet you are standing on. The 11 the gravity is, the higher your weight is. Astronauts may not weigh anything in space and can move around without touching anything 12 , because there is no gravity to 13 them down. As a result, there is no weight.

How much gravity the planet has 14 the size of the planet. A small planet has less gravity and a larger planet has more gravity. If you were to stand on a more massive(巨大的) planet such as Jupiter(木星), you would 15 more; if you were to stand on a less massive planet such as Mars, you would weigh less.

B
Historically, people explored the ocean to find new ways to travel around the world or to start new trade ways. Today, we pay more attention to the ocean itself in the ocean exploration.
In recent years, new technology has made it easier to dive(潜水) into the deep sea. Better submarines(潜艇), robots and cameras now allow scientists to explore areas people couldn’t reach before. China’s Mengxiang deep-ocean drilling vessel(大洋钻探船) can now be added to the list.

Human beings actually don’t know much about the ocean. Believe it or not, we know more about space than we do about the deep sea. Since 1969, a total of 12 people have walked on the moon, but only three have dived to the Mariana Trench’s deepest point. Even more shocking? Although the ocean covers about 71% of the earth’s surface, 95% of it is unexplored.
Why does so much of the ocean remain unknown? Part of the answer is that it’s difficult to explore. Sure, it’s hard to get a spaceship into space. But remember that in space, you can see things. The deep sea, however, is hopelessly dark. Getting a light down there that can shine far enough to see anything is no easy task.

That being said, ocean exploration is worth the risk and cost. The ocean is connected to all of us and plays a role in everything from the air we breathe, the food we eat and the transportation of the goods we buy to weather and longer-term climate trends(趋势).
Most of our knowledge of the ocean comes from shallower waters, but deeper waters are becoming more important. Many fisheries are built in deep waters. The deep ocean also holds a huge amount of oil, gas, metal and so on.

B
C

( C )23. Why does the writer mention space in the text?
A. To prove the interest of ocean exploration.
B. To show the necessity of space exploration.
C. To show the difficulty of ocean exploration.
D. To prove the importance of space exploration.
C

( D )24. The underlined word “task” refers to “ ”.
A. inventing a new light
B. seeing the things in space
C. getting a spaceship into space
D. sending a bright enough light down
( A )25. What can we get from the text?
A. Our understanding of the ocean is less than we thought before.
B. The ocean coverage is the largest and we have explored most of it.
C. More resources come from the shallower waters than from deeper ones.
D. Three times more people dived into the ocean than walked on the moon.

第二节 阅读短文,根据短文内容,从短文后所给的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有一项为多余选项。(每小题2.5分,共10分)
A. Your answer is yes.
B. You may like foraging.
C. Look for wild plants together.
D. Do not look for plants in areas with a lot of cars, like by a road or parking lot.
E. When you walk in the forest, you can find many kinds of plants.

Enjoy nature with foraging(搜寻)!
Do you enjoy walking in nature? Do you like learning about plants? 26. B Foraging is a lot like looking for a treasure. You look around in places like forests to find different kinds of plants that you can eat.
Foraging is a lot of fun. 27. E Some of these plants are dangerous. Some of them are good to eat. You can spend many relaxing hours walking around in the wild, looking for good plants to eat.
B
E

While foraging is a lot of fun, you still have to be careful. It is exciting and challenging to find plants that you can eat, but do not eat them until you are very sure of what they are. Before you go foraging, take a class about it. Learn how the different kinds of plants that you can eat look in the wild. Practise finding them with your foraging teacher. Then join a group of foragers. 28. C Never eat anything until you are 100% sure of what it is. Some people have become sick by accident because they ate a wild plant that was dangerous.
C

Foragers follow some important rules. They do not collect all of the plants in one area. If you take all the plants from one area, no more will grow there. 29. D If the area is very dirty, the plants there will not be good to eat and may make you very sick.
D

五、 (大连期中改编)任务型阅读(每小题2.5分,共10分)
The secret in the soil
Lily, a 14-year-old girl, thought she was bad at everything until she found an old seed bag in her grandmother’s garden. “Why don’t I try growing plants?” she thought.

At first, her plants died quickly. She watered them too much, and her small balcony(阳台) got little sunlight. Feeling sad, Lily almost gave up until her science teacher Ms Chen noticed her hard work. “Plants need time and care, not just water,” Ms Chen said gently. She taught Lily to write in a notebook every week: “Water the plants on Tuesday. Check leaves for bugs(虫子). Give plant food once a month.”
Lily’s balcony slowly changed into a green corner. She grew tall sunflowers that could turn to face the sun. Her mint(薄荷) plants smelled so fresh that she sometimes sniffed(闻) them for fun.

In her notebook, she drew pictures and wrote simple notes: “Day 30: My bean plant is as tall as my water bottle! It climbed the stick I tied there.”
One rainy afternoon, her first tomato turned bright red. When she shared it with her family at dinner, Lily smiled. “Plants grow slowly—they don’t try to hurry,” she told herself. “Maybe I don’t need to be perfect all the time, either.” Now when friends say, “You are more confident after you begin gardening.” Lily answers, “Yes! I have also learned a lot from my new hobby. It has taught me to wait and watch. Sometimes it’s okay if things take time.”
