Before arriving in China, I had read lots of books about China. Therefore, when I arrived, I was excited to live in the country that is rich in history and culture. It was so greatly different from the UK. The food, the customs, the big cities and everyday life–I couldn’t wait to explore (探索).
However, learning Chinese hadn’t even entered my mind, not because I was lazy, but because I had no confidence to learn such a difficult language. Besides this, once I moved to China and I lived in Shanghai. It is an International city, with many people speaking English as a second language. So I thought English would be sufficient.
But after a year in China. I found many expatriates (侨民) spoke Chinese. Perhaps it was achievable after all. I felt uncomfortable because so many Chinese people could speak English while I couldn’t even speak the most basic Chinese. To face the challenge, I decided to begin my language journey and my only regret is that I didn’t start earlier.
In the two years, I have made great progress since starting to learn. Now, I am able to talk in Chinese on many topics. Learning to speak Chinese isn’t as difficult as I once expected. When I speak to Chinese people in Chinese, they almost always understand me. The most challenging thing is listening since Chinese people talk at such a speed. I can’t always understand what has been said but my weekly online language exchanges help with this. Learning Chinese has taken a lot of hard work. But there is still a long way to go before I reach my goal of fluency.
Learning Chinese not only helps me in daily life, but deepens my cultural understanding of such a great country. So, to all my non-Chinese friends, I would say, “Don’t be afraid, face the challenge and be confident.”

24.Why does the writer think listening is the most challenging

B.Because Chinese people speak too fast.
C.Because he has no way to practice listening.
D.Because he doesn’t know much about many topics.
25.What does the writer want to tell us according to the passage
A.It’s never too late to learn. B.Nothing is difficult to the man who will try.

Try to think about this: you sit down and begin to eat a tomato. Suddenly, the tomato starts to scream! This thing would never really happen. But a new study shows that plants make sounds when they are stressed.
Scientists in Israel did the study. During the study, they used microphones to record healthy and stressed tomato—the stressed ones were either unwatered for several days or had their stems (茎) cut. They then used a special method to show the differences.
What did they do The first two groups made sounds 30 to 50 times every hour. The third group only made the sound once every hour. The scientists said that thirsty plants began making noises before they were clearly dehydrated. And the frequency of sounds reached the highest point after five days with no water, and then dropped as the plants dried up completely. What’s more, the types of sounds the plants made were different according to the cause of their stress. “When plants are not stressed at all, they are very quiet,” Lilach Hadany from the study team told CNN.
Who listened to these sounds Scientists believed that animals and insects may listen to the sounds. For example, the sound can tell them that the plant is stressed and not good for laying eggs on. When an animal wants to eat plants, it can also use sound to choose which one to eat.
The scientist also listens to other plants such as wheat and corn. They also make more sounds when stressed. The study noted that sound recordings of plants could be useful in agriculture to make sure crops were getting enough water and to give water where it was needed most. Scientists say the study can help farmers in the future. They can better take care of the crops by “hearing” how plants feel.
26.A new study shows that ________.
A.tomatoes often felt stressed B.Some tomatoes could cry
C.plants could make sounds when stressed D.plants could communicate with people
27.Which of the following might be the third group when scientists do the study

A.lose water B.make noise C.give press D.drop off

A.let farmers listen to plants’ sounds
B.teach people how to care for plants

Celebrating your small wins can make you feel more confident and give you the drive to keep going.
Doing your best in your favorite subject or baking a cake for your friends—when you put effort into something that makes you happy, it’s an achievement. You can have this good feeling from many parts of your life. Sometimes, you might not notice your small successes. Look back at your old schoolwork and see how much you’ve gotten better. Or think about a time when you helped someone and made a difference. Success can also be something only you feel, like getting through a hard day or speaking up in class.
Melanie McNally, an expert, says that noticing small successes makes you feel like you can reach for bigger things. Studies show that when you celebrate your achievements, a part of your brain that likes rewards gets excited. This makes you feel good about yourself. It gives you a positive feeling and the motivation to face challenges in the future. McNally says, “We shouldn’t just celebrate big things.” Winning a sports game is great, but getting up early to practice is important too.
You can make an “achievement jar”. Every time you do something important, put a marble in it. Watch the jar fill up. If you have a goal, like learning to play a musical instrument, make a sticker chart (贴纸图表) to show how often you practice. When the jar is full or the chart is completed, give yourself what McNally calls “victory treats”. These can be fun things like going for a bike ride with friends, playing games, or taking a relaxing bath. Also, share your wins with your family and friends so they can cheer you on.
